Gloria Vanderbilt Fail

Once a year we have a tax-free shopping weekend for clothing and school supplies to prepare for ths school year. Doesn't matter if you are in school and there are limits on pricing. I normally use that to pick up some jeans and athletic shoes for the year since that is what I wear on a daily basis. I must try on jeans, so never order them online.

Bopped over to Kohls for my annual trying on of the jeans. I stuck to boot cut or maybe straight leg. Got a pair of Lees and Levis in boot cut. Tried on several pair of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. The fabric had a softness to it, and it was the only brand that actually had jeans in Petite sizes and lengths within the Petite sizes although there were not boot cut, just what appeared to be a straight cut. Regrettably, I cannot wear this brand. The size 6P was too tight in the calves although it fit the butt. The size 8P was too large in the butt, but the calves were still a bit tight. Also, the waistline was too high. I like mine to fall at the belly button at the highest, but that is normally for dress pants. Her waistband was actually higher than I would wear for dress pants.

So, 2 prs of Jeans and 1 pr of Lees casual navy pants at $39.50 ea and some panties and sports bras plus I got $40 Kohls cash to go back later and get a purse. Oh, and got 2 pr of shoes at Shoe Carnval (Buy one get one 1/2 off). One pair to wear with my jeans and the other pair for the gym.

@Icegoddess- I'm the same with Gloria Vanderbilt; they just don't fit me right. My sister-in-law loves them. Good thing there are other choices for all of us.

@Lisa Y, yes, except all the jeans now seem to have a lot of stretch in them. The ones I got today had either 1 or 2% spandex/elastin in them depending on the brand, but they're both stretchier than the 1% Elastin jeans I have on today. I couldn't walk around the store in them to see if I'll end up with the problem of them scooching down on me. I never have that problem with the non-stretchy jeans. I guess I'm going to have to invest in a good belt. I hate belt shopping.

I am happy you had a successful shopping experience at Kohl's. I am a believer in shopping at local stores and we have an abundance of stores, all varieties and choices. I like being out and about and walking through stores whether I buy or just browse. It gets me out of the house and I support local businesses and socialize.

I am glad there are shopping options whether going to a store or on line. I always find what I want out there and going to a Barnes/Noble, Pier One, Target, Hallmark store, and so many others for me is a positive experience. It's good to hear you found some great buys too at local stores, Icegoddess.

I remember once I was wearing GV jeans and was in The Gap shopping for jeans. I asked for help from the salesgirl for my size, she said "why are you wearing those jeans, they look like mom jeans"?! I did buy Gap jeans and retired my GV jeans!

@spiderw , I buy most of my clothes locally although I don't enjoy it so much. I don't like going store to store so tend to just shop at the same places although they don't have the fashion choices I would like to have. And I really need to try on clothing to see if it fits properly. The main reason I so a lot of online shopping is not having to run all over the place trying to find the things I want. Once I decide on something, that is what I want and something similar just won't do.

I understand your choice of shopping on line , I believe more people do than not. I just like being out and about, I always have and going to stores is fun for me. Also I want to support businesses and the people who work at them. Every time a store closes I am saddened even though I do understand progress, people wanting to shop quickly and easily and have everything delivered to their doors. I do too.

However, for me I do not want to depend on on line shopping for my every need. I am retired so I am fortunate to have the time to go out and buy. It's whatever we like, choices and options and that is good for all of us!!!!! Enjoy your weekend and new clothes.

I'm really short waisted & have had good luck with Kohl's Sonoma bootcut jeans in petite-short, but they're really hard to find in the store. A lot of the time, I'll order from dot com if I can find them, but even then, a pair of the same size jeans can vary so I like to try on before I buy, but at least with Kohl's it's an easy return if they don't fit right.

@aubnwa01 if an online purchase doesn't fit do you take it back to the local store? I was able to do that once with something I bought at Sports Academy's online store. That was really handy.

@Icegoddess Yes, you can return items that you buy from Kohl's website to a local store. It is quite handy.

Wow!! How rude of the salesgirl. I remember going in a Coldwater Creek shop with my mom once and tha saleswoman told me they did6have anything in there for me (I'm 6ft tall). How bloody rude. She didn't know why I was in there or who I was shopping for!

I don't know where you live but if you ever decide to visit PA, NJ or DE you never have to pay tax on clothing. DE has no sales tax at all for anything!

@Icegoddess It depends on the company...yes I have returned lots of times in the store at Chicos & Talbots after purchasing online.

Sounds like my experience when we got a Victoria's Secret store. I walked in looking for a particular style I had seen in the catalogue, so I knew they carried it in an A-cup, but the sales agent pulled out 2 bras that looked pretty much like training bras and said that was all they had in my size. It just adds to the feelings of inadequacy and that we should be ashamed of our size and therefore should just keep it hidden.

My sisters love & wear GV jeans from Kohl’s. I didn’t like them on me. I wear mostly Levi’s, but I have also worn Lee, Sonoma from Kohl's, and Ralph Lauren (most expensive jean I ever purchased - loved them!) Lots of jeans have more stretch in them than back in the day. Personally, I like a bit of stretch mixed with my denim - more comfortable. I don’t like knit jeans or super skinny stretch jeans that look like leggings.

@MarthaStewardess- I thought the same thing but wasn't going to comment. But, if a salesclerk said anything like that to me, I'd have told her she just lost a sale and walked out!

If I'm wearing something, it's clearly because I bought what I liked. The salesgirl in this instance was obviously eager to make a sale, but there are better ways to do it.
