What would you wear to a Broadway show?

I have a confession: I've never been to a Broadway show. I have been to lots of community theater shows where the attire seems to be super casual.

What would you wear to a Broadway show? Is everyone super dressed up?

People do not dress for a matinee. Perhaps evening shows are a little dressier. I've seen all kinds of dress at Broadway shows. Dress comfortably.

@JJsMom - Sorry, to disappoint, however, I don't see anyone super dressed up anymore.

Last time I went to a play, I think I wore slacks and a nice top. I've also gone in dark blue jeans with a top & jacket.

You will see everything when it comes to fashion.

If it's a matinee, I usually wear pants and a nice top. At night I tend to dress up. (we usually go to dinner and I enjoy dressing up)

Have fun; I love Broadway shows.

The seats are very close together and you either have to hold or sit on your coat so if you wear a coat, don't wear a bulky one.

Day or night? What time of year?

As with everything else, Broadway theater attendance has gone very casual.

I would not suggest very dressy. Daytime will be more casual than evening- but not by much. Wear what you feel good in. Some of the older theaters have seats that leave you with less room than on an airplane.

Just saw two Broadway shows within the last few months. Most people were dressed pretty casual. Blue jeans on most, however, my friends and I wore black dress pants with a blouse or a sweater. Think pretty much whatever you are most comforable in, I would wear that.

I usually feel when I do go to a Broadway or even off broadway or touring shows, its a special occasion, at least I make it a special occastion. The last one I went to I wore a long black skirt, boots, and a dressy Linea sweater.

Its whatever you want it to be. Have fun .

few people dress up to see a broadway show.

most want to be comfortable while sitting down.

i generally wear a nice pant, nice top, and flats or boots.

i occasionally wear black leggings with a nice tunic top.

i see everything from jeans and leggings to dresses and skirts......and everything in between. have even seen sweatshirts/hoodies.

VERY few men are in suits.

we do make a full evening out of it and enjoy going to dinner and cocktails before the show.

I make it a special occasion too. I went to Hamilton last summer and I wore a Calvin Klein dress with sparkles on the sleeves. Carried a sparkly clutch.

I don't have many occasions to get dressed up and I enjoy doing that. For me it made the experience even more special. It was a matinee. Any time I've been to shows I've dressed up.

I always dress up for theater/concert as it is typically a special outing involving dinner at a nice restaurant. Obviously I would not wear a glittery gown but a nice blouse with slacks or skirt, or pretty dress is very appropriate. If some choose to dress like slobs it’s on them. Wear what makes you feel great and enjoy the show.

People really don't get dressed up. However I don't like looking like a slob either and since I'm not a dress person I'll wear nice pants (usually black or gray) with a nice top, jacket (or cardigan) and accessories.

I don't see anyone in formal wear at Broadway shows anymore. In fact, I've seen people in jeans now, even for evening performances.

I generally wear clothes I would wear to work.

To a Broadway matinee I’ve worn a navy blazer, white shirt, dark jeans, and Cole Haan animal print block heeled shoes. For the evening, I’ve worn a black dress with a wrap or a nicer pair of slacks and slightly dressier top, depends on whether we’re doing dinner beforehand. You’ll see anything and everything. The keyword is comfort and it’s pretty much wear whatever you want— no rules anymore.

Very casual. Wear what is comfortable. Seats are very close together and you cannot move around. Anything goes, especially in the summer when there are many tourists seeing shows.

@JJsMom Congratulations if you are going to a Broadway show! You will have a wonderful time! I usually wear black pants & a pretty top. Keep in mind when you are in NYC you will be doing A LOT of walking so wear comfortable shoes. I don't know where you live but driving cross-town is a nightmare so be prepared to walk or take mass transit. If you have to drive go online & get a coupon for ICON parking lots near the theater district. You will save a lot of money as parking is expensive. Don't worry about getting too dressed up - not many people do. Relax & enjoy the show!

@JJsMom Last time I was at a Broadway show it was Miss Saigon. No one was dressed up. In fact, some were in jeans. Wear what makes you comfortable. A pair of slacks, blouse or tee with cardigan or wear a skirt. Enjoy.

If it's a matinee, dress like you were going to a movie. If it's in the evening, don't over dress unless you want too. I wouldn't wear jeans for an evening show but I would wear a nice pair of dress slacks and a pretty top or cardigan. Generally, I base how I to dress for an evening show on where we are going for dinner after the show. No one gets super dressed up anymore, those days are over.

I've never been to a Broadway show but I have been to an afternoon performance at Carnegie Hall, and I didn't wear jeans. It was the Christmastime and I wore black pants, black flats, and a sweater.

If it was an evening performance I'd wear a dress, but nothing too fancy, business casual, and something I'd be comfortable in. I think it comes down to what your style and your comfort level is.

@JJsMom , yes you will see everything...people all dressed up and people in jeans.

The last live performance I went to our our Arts Center was The Nutcracker, evening performance. The best sight for me was all the little girls all dolled up for a night on the town. There was a little girl, under five, next to me, and she never moved a muscle during the entire performance. She was glued to the stage. I was impressed and she was cuter than a button!
