On 2/20/2014 mandymom said: Azterry!--Hi...just got a quick break in an afternoon/evening full of meetings and wanted to check back here...thanks for the question. Well dressed would certainly have to change depending on the climate and season...I'm in an area that can get very cold for part of the year...and very hot for another...real seasons. Being casual, for me, means slacks that fit well...have probably been to the tailor...in wool or a blend, a good twill, linen, silk or a silk blend, and, yes, my dark, tailored denim ones as well...they just are not regular jeans...any length needed depending on the season. Shirts or tops are basically either linen, silk, soft blends, cashmere or starched cotton...jackets in fabrics similar to the slacks...just regular clothes from designers who don't cater to the ultra-casual world of jeans and t's. I wear this on a daily basis when not working with clients...dress casually for meetings, most appointments, etc. For something dressier...showers, higher level meetings, luncheons, dinner, for ex...it's dresses or suits (if the occasion is business related)...some of my own favorite suits, or 2-piece outfits are kind of Chanel inspired in style...my favorite softer dresses are often silk or silk blends with portrait collars or drape necks...dress pants with softer-style jackets and tops, perhaps a wrap-style top, are also a good part of my dressier things...just would not go to a shower, for example, in jeans and a sweater, or leggings and boots. I wear leggings with long, soft tunics if I am entertaining at home kind of casually...maybe for drinks and a casual supper or brunch. There are so very many ways a person can dress comfortably and still not always be in jeans at showers and white tablecloth dinners that it is strange to me that they don't. If the clothes fit well, they should be comfortable...you should be comfortable even in formal attire (I wear that a lot, and if it weren't comfortable, I couldn't stand it). Wearing something different every day...wearing outfits, even if it's just to run to your child's school or the store...shouldn't be a big deal...you have to get dressed anyway, so why not wear a cute jacket and skirt or slacks rather than the uniform of the moment? None of this has to be stuffy or uptight (I hate that word!)...hope this answers your question.

thanks.

It sounds like you are very happy with your style and that's what is important.

Mine is quite different than yours and that's OK too. I don't wear wool or silk because those fabrics are not the best choices for a desert climate. Jackets are possible in winter, but not in 110 degree plus heat.

Our lifestyle here is much more casual out of necessity. I wear jeans in winter only because they are simply too heavy for our summers. I would wear black jeans with a high heeled boot and a jacket or dressy sweater for a night out here and be perfectly acceptable nearly everywhere. You seldom see women dressed in suits in the evenings.

Dresses are seen mainly in the summer--lightweight, flowing styles with bare legs and sandals. In the daytime, capris, casual skirts and bermuda shorts are customary. I like to wear a higher wedge with an interesting top paired with my capris or long shorts.

I do think geographical location makes a huge difference in fashion styles. What I wear here would not necessarily be appropriate for San Francisco, Chicago or New York. A woman wearing dark wool pants, a cashmere sweater, closed toed pumps and a wool jacket would look very out of place here 9 months of the year-not to mention she would suffocate!

Our style choices are very different yet we are both probably considered well-dressed for our particular locations.

This is a bit of a confession .......

I haven't worn jeans in more than 20 years. Partly because it's too hot most of the year and partly because they are too heavy and make me look like a farmer (NOT to give farmers a bad name).

I wonder if anyone has given up wearing them ..... anybody willing to admit it?

(In case you're wondering what I'd wear on a hot day, it would be a nice tank top with wide shoulder straps and a capri pant made out that yoga pant material blend ... cotton and spandex). Clean looking and cool ... works for me.

Raising my hand.

I hate them. They make me cranky and hot.

And I never, ever, EVER wear t-shirts. Most women look terrible in t-shirts. I know there will be many women who pounce on me for that comment, saying how nice they look in t-shirts. I'm sure many of you do, but most women don't look nice in them.

Also, I think that women over 50 who wear jeans t-shirts and omg… sneakers.. are fooling themselves about how they look.

Tinkrbl44, what you describe are the jeans of many years ago. Jeans have changed a lot since then. So have "t-shirts." They are not all the shapeless shirts you recall. There are many more options available now.

I recall going for a while w/o jeans many years ago. Not sure how long it was but I felt the same way as you. When I tried some on again there were so many options. I live in a warm climate & love lightweight jeans for summer.

I do not wear Jeans as it is also too hot where I live and for me they are too uncomfortable. I do have very cool, comfy crops and capris - none denim material though. I also love skirts during out hot summers here in AZ. My kids who live in CA live in their Jeans and they do look nice . It is good we all have our own choices.

If you mean shapeless short sleeved pastel cotton crew neck tops then no I wouldn't be caught dead in one of them! ....but I like wearing vibrant jewel tone, v-neck, scoop neck or boat neck fitted tees.

The last few tee shirts that I purchased on sale the end of summer from Talbots were very well made. I bought one that had a beaded scoop neckline in a rich lapis blue. I also purchased a solid green & solid medium blue with a cut design in the neckline on sale for a great price with a coordinating 3/4 sleeve floral cardigan which I haven't worn yet but was too pretty to resist.

....so what is meant by t-shirts? Besides tanks what do you wear in warm weather?

Jeans are also subjective but no I don't wear them when it's hot out but since it's winter here with more snow expected tomorrow then yes I wear jeans but they fit well and are comfortable.

I think we can often be wrong when we make "blanket" statements.

I feel much more confident in jeans that any other type of clothing. Does it take maybe trying on 50 pair before finding just the right ones? Yes! But it is so worth it!

As for t-shirts--don't be thinking of men's Hanes boxy underwear that really do look like a "T". Rather, a cute fitted t with cap sleeves can be a mainstay in a women's casual wardrobe.

I don't wear long jeans in the summer--they are too hot, but the other 9 months, well, I live in my jeans.

Yes, I wear jeans and Tshirts year round. But when it gets hot in the summer, I only wear my white denim jeans. More likely to find me in shorts or capris with a tank top. It gets really hot here in the summer. One piece of advice my late Mother gave me is not to get comfortable wearing elastic waist pants. I do work out in elastic waist pants but still wear a size 10 in jeans.

Yes, I wear jeans -- dark ink blue or black/gray/dark taupe jeans. Never wear sneakers with jeans. Younger women can get by with that, but I prefer leather shoes or boots, hiking shoes or sandals. I gave up tee shirts. They aren't flattering. If I wear a cotton shirt it will be Henley buttons, snaps, button or zip up or something more interesting than a plain tee. I work out in some cute baseball cut shirts and yoga pants. Prefer things like this over tees. Never wear standard sweatshirts. I prefer stylish zip or snap hooded tops with pockets.

I love blue jeans and wear them most of the year, but in summer I prefer lightweight white jeans, ankle pants, or shorts.

I can understand not liking jeans. They are not the most comfortable pants IMO. Some people don't find them flattering, or just not their style.

I love tees, especially silky ones with a bit of modal, in pretty colors. Their simple lines work well on my not-so-tall figure, and I like an uncluttered look most of the time. But I wear other styles, too.

I wear jeans in the winter only - and never at home - only if I'm going out - cannot stand the heavy binding feel of jeans in the summer.

I love shorts and capris in the summer - especially white ones. T's? No. Pullover scoop neck short sleeve tunic types yes!

Let me add, I have never worn a T shirt like guys wear or anything with words on it! Ewww.

I haven't worn a pair of jeans in over 5 years. I stopped wearing tshirts about the same time too. Ever since I found women with control pants I never went back. Only tshirts I would wear are ones that are vneck and junior cut. I gave up on looking like a frump in tshirt and jeans. I'm young, have a great body and prefer clothes that flatter.

I think you should give jeans another try. They really have come a long way since 20 years ago. They now have spandex and are really comfortable to wear. Not Your Daughter jeans is a good brand to try. Also, I've had some luck with DG2 on the southern channel.

On 2/12/2014 Libbylady said:
Love jeans, hate T-shirts made of cotton with crew necks & short sleevces.

Yep--- I caught a glimpse of myself in a T-shirt one day...and it was the last time I wore one. If they have a V-neck and 3/4 sleeves, okay---but crew necks---no more for me, sadly...trying to get the dh to see that he could give them up, too... Luckily, he just wears them around the house...
