Eye doc appointment later today and I'm due for new frames. It's daunting to think that I'm stuck with my choice for the next two years.

On what criteria do you base your eyewear choices?

I think your face shape plays a part. I always get titanium frames, and the ones where he bow attaches right to the lens. They are far less noticeable, and very easy to wear, plus they seem to look nice, but they are expensive

You might see what google has to say, about choosing a frame ,that looks nice

Good question. It is tough. I just did this about a month ago.

I pick at random to get an idea of shape and color and size. Then narrow it down. Criteria is just what hits me as looking good. Plus, I ask the optician for her opinion. You gotta go with your own gut though.

Also, a few years ago, I started to get 2 pairs at one time, and it really has been nice to have a choice day-to-day. I know this is not possible for everyone.

I noted that glasses styles in general are getting bigger rather than smaller.

I always bought what I really, really liked because I wore them everyday and they had to last for several years (frames).

@house_cat Go to Pinterest. There is a website that you can "virtually" try on the frames! I wish I knew the exact site, I would try to direct you there. The ladies who work in the office where i got my frames were very helpful. I chose something, but she suggested something sllightly different to fit the shape of my face. I've been more than happy, & I appreciate helpful people.

I've been wearing glasses since I was a little girl ... really easy for me to pick frames.

Rectangular, darker colored plastic frames with wide side pieces. I prefer frames that are very noticeable and a bit "showy." I have a weakness for designer frames.

@house_cat .... I have a small face, so I look for smaller glasses. I've worn glasses since I was four (contacts since 16). Back then, there weren't any cute frames. I had the same frames forever.... when the lenses changed, the frames were still good, so I had to get new lenses for the old frames. When the frames broke, the lenses were still good, so I had to get the same frames. HATED THEM! And it traumatized me! LOL

As a result, I go for the least frame I can get away with! I can't find my face when wearing heavy frames. My first choice would be rimless, but they are very expensive, and I have a heavy PLUS prescription, with additional PLUS for reading, which is a little too much for rimless. So, I go for wire rims.

Also, because I have a small face, I look for frames that are smaller from side to side. I try to get my pupils in the center of the lenses. This really narrows my options, but they fit my face better and I don't look cross-eyed in them. Try on a lot of frames, and choose styles and sizes that you like, and then narrow your options.

One of the sites where you can try on frames virtually is Zenni Optical. I have been buying most of my glasses from them for over 12 years. I wear progressives and with frames they usually cost about $120.

I got my first eyeglasses in 1948. My mother gave me complete freedom to pick the frames I wanted - and I got some red plaid ones. Loved those glasses!

I wear progressive lenses and the main features I look for are very lightweight and for the bridge between the 2 lenses to see flat and comfortably on my nose. Otherwise I look for the most reasonable price.

@ALRATIBA I remember one pair for fun glasses... blue with different color speckles. I liked them. Then I fell off my bike and the glasses broke. That was early on. I think it was actually a tricycle. When I was a little older, and my face wasn't growing, I had that same horrible pair of tortoise shell frames for years. I still hate tortoise shell!

I just got a new pair of glasses (long overdue!). They are wire, but purple! I didn't get them for the color. Bought them for the fit, but I'm okay with the color.

I let the optomitrist pick what he thinks is right for my face. Our guy at the eye doctor does this well.He knows his stock and he knows how to choose the pair that's right for your face shape.I've not ever disliked his choices. He'll pick out a couple and I'll pick from them. If I can't decide between them, I pick the least expensive.

I ask for suggestions from the associate helping me.

They measure my face, etc...so if I choose the most

expensive frame that's way too small for me...they’ll say so.

Trust the system.

I let DH and the associates help. Since my prescription is so strong only certain frames will work. I also have the lens thinned so they don’t look as thick.

But I was surprised my lens prescription wouldn’t accommodate some frames. Never had that issue before.

@house_cat I always think I look good in a pair of frames until I take a selfie. Sometimes you just don't "see" how it really looks on you until you see yourself in a picture.

That happened to me only one time - I wear glass lenses and picked out really great frames ... a couple of days later the office called me and said the glass lenses won't fit the frames I chose. So back to the office and pick out something else!

That I like them. There's no list of things they have to be, I just have to like them on my face because they will be there every single day.

LensCrafters will take pictures of you in 4 different frames and then make a collage of the 4 images so you can compare them all together. I bring my cell phone in with me and take selfies wearing whatever frames I like and choose the one I'm happiest with.

Same here @ALRATIBA. I figure if I need to wear them, why hide it. Be outgoing & stylish. I go w/ black frames (duh!) in a rectangular shape because my face is roundish. The one caveat I remember reading is that the top of the frame should line up with your eyebrow or be above it. You shouldn’t see your brows over the tops of the frame...supposedly looks like a double brow.

I wear mine for reading (graduated bi-focal) and sometimes just wear them all day since top portion is a weak prescription. They end up on top of my head a lot. I look for flexible stems. Since my hair went grey, I changed frames to matte black from shiny so not so “in your face”.

@house_cat @Lisa Y.... I agree 100%! I took selfies of every frame I tried when I was buying frames recently. Better yet, have someone else take the photo... it will be better than a selfie. This will help you with your decision.
