Curious....

Often the discussions on the forum are about what people think of how others dress, etc. And more often than not, it's more critical than complimentary. It might be about a style, or a color....but I'm curious, does your wardrobe reflect what you genuinely like, or what you want others to think about how you dress....and does it matter to you, to follow fashion? Or do you have your own style, that you feel is right for you? Just curious....

I march to the beat of my own drum. I wear what I like and what I think looks good on me. I don't like looking like everyone else.

I follow fashion to get new ideas. I get bored with the same style, colors, etc. all the time. I wear items in my closet that are classic, but I enjoy finding new things that also look good on me. I stand a little taller when I think I look good.

I dress for me. I buy what fits and what I think looks good. I don't necessarily follow fashion.

I dress to be appropriate for whatever situation I'm in. The older I get, the more I need to feel "put together" when I go anywhere. That just jumped out of bed careless look that I could pull off when I was 20, doesn't translate well at 55. Even so, comfort is my #1 priority. I will no longer wear uncomfortable clothes. They must fit my body and my lifestyle.

I don't follow ""fashion"" and I'm definitely NOT a fashionista - a term that I consider derogatory.

My style of dress has evolved over the years. I have a defined ""look.""

There's a quote I first read in the book Advanced Style and have repeated frequently here. I paraphrase ....

Fashion says me too. Style says me only. I don't want to look like anyone else.

Ditto what favored said I know what looks good on me, what styles work best, my color and fabric choices... Now makeup is a whole other topic, lol!

I am a short, plump, 65 year old, so a lot of what appears in fashion magazines modeled on tall, lanky, 25-year-olds just doesn't cut it for my real body and my real life. I've learned over the years some of the cuts and colors that work best for me, and I love to play with pieces, use and combine them in different ways, and play with different jewelry and accessories. It's always fun to look at fashions portrayed in magazines, on TV, in movies, see creative trends and approaches, and perhaps adapt some of them to my own sense of style. No way am I a "slave to fashion", but I enjoy being creative with the things in my drawers and closet.

Over the years I’ve learned what works best with my body shape and lifestyle. Most of the current fashions don’t work for me (e.g. sleeveless dresses, fitted tops/dresses, above-the-knee dress lengths, low-cut necklines, etc). I can only wear two dress styles – sheath and empire. I also prefer mid-calf which is not currently in style, so yes, I go by what works best for me and not necessarily what’s in style.

I always say I'm the trendsetter - wearing styles ahead of everyone else. :-)

Oh my clothes are so ALL about me and what I like. Forget what others think. If I don't think and feel cute in something it could be dripping in diamonds and I'd hate it!!! Some things I like are on trend, others classic and still then comfort. My clothes advertise my personality miles away and also the mood I am in.
