I Don't Like Rayon Caftans

As soon as I find a caftan that I like I see that it's rayon I move on. It shrinks, fades and doesn't hold up!

Joan Rivers makes great caftans (poly) but you can't hang them or they will stretch out as per instructions. Who wants to keep them in a drawer?

I would buy if only I could find in a cotton or slub cotton knit that could withstand a hanger.

I tried a caftan from Vermont Country Store 100% rayon. I washed it and hung to dry. It did not shrink. I wonder if rayon varies?

@Trinity11 I think rayon can vary a great deal. I have seen some of it so cheap it falls apart and wrinkles and is only fit for about 1 wearing

But other things that are rayon, last, and look good forever. Modal is a form of rayon ,and it is a lovely fabric, and has a nice hand to it.

@cherry...I think you are right. Back in the 70's I had a beautiful dress in rayon. I was heartbroken when I washed it and it practically disintegrated. I stayed away from rayon for years after that. Last year I bought a rayon top from NYDJ and it washed beautifully. I guess the fabric holds up better dependent on price...

i love good rayon - it is soft and long-lasting. JR caftans i find way too heavy and prefer a lighter fabric.

@Trinity11 they make it from wood pulp, of all things. It might depend on the type of wood they use ,and how it's treated

Todays rayon, is a far cry from that stuff from 40 years ago

I don't like 100% rayon in anything. To me it's like a rag-no shape no body. For me it needs to be combined with cotton or poly to give it some substance.

I wear caftans as beach cover-ups and have bought several from Soft Surroundings (and their Outlet) Most have been cotton blends and despite the fact some say dry clean, I hand wash and hang to dry. I've never had problems with shrinking or stretching.

I've purchased a few JR's knit caftans and ended up donating them. They were heavy and just not my style.
