Hosiery: Yay or Nay?

What is wrong with wearing pantyhose? I was watching E's Fashion Police last night and they were making fun of one of the singers at the Grammy's because she was wearing nude pantyhose. When did this become an alleged fashion faux pas?

So, nude hosiery...yay or nay?

I'm going to continue wearing nude hosiery (Kate Middleton does!) with my dresses and skirts (unless I go on a limb and wear black). My legs are too darn white not to wear hose. (I don't tan...I just burn and become a brighter shade of white.)

I'm on the red carpet frequently (the rug in my living room).

I wear hosiery - but never nude (only dark taupe, off-black, black or navy). I personally don't feel bare legs are ever appropriate.

Just thinking back ... I started wearing stockings in 1956 (pre-pantyhose days) - I've never worn a dress or skirt with bare legs since then.

I like nude hose and do wear them. Don't care what the fashion police say! I do go bare during the summer months or when wearing scrappy sandals (also, only during the summer) but for work or formal, always love hose! Also live darker hose and tights but sometimes a dark leg looks wrong and so nude is the answer -- for me anyway. Have never had a hard time finding them, from low end to the highest, so I guess many are still buying and wearing them.

Personally, I stopped wearing them a decade ago, and since I have no chance of ever being the Queen of England, have no intention of ever wearing them again. There are solutions for white legs, sticky dress shoes, etc., and none of them entail wearing nude hose.

Live and let live. If you like them, wear them.

Kathleen, that's about the time I started wearing stockings, too. Those were the days! I remember when "pantihose" made its debut, and how freeing it was to get rid of the garter belts, not worry about seams, etc. I do not work in a corporate environment, and see no reason to ever wear hose again. In my life, bare legs are just as appropriate as bare arms. I do, however, wear tights from October-April.

With maxi dresses and skirts, I don't wear hose. But if I'm wearing a dress that is knee length or higher and I'm wearing closed toe shoes, hose are a must for me.

In really hot weather or with maxi dresses or strappy sandals, probably not, but in real life say for church or other formal event (such as a wedding or funeral), then yes, I'd wear nude pantyhose.

Of course I wear tights, black, brown, navy, whatever color in the winter.

IMO, this was one of those faux "faux pas" that the fashion industry put out there. But I'm in the live and let live category. I'll do what I think is right and others can do what they choose.

I have no desire to take my fashion advice from those 4 people.

In cold weather states, bare legs look ridiculous and stupid in the dead of winter.

If pantyhose do come back in fashion, they will be singing a different tune. Remember how in fashion hose were just a few years back? Then all of a sudden, some supposed fashion guru deemed them out and all the fashion sheep followed along.

I also wear pantyhose. In the summer I don't with longer skirts/sandals but if the skirt is knee length, close toe shoes also, then yes I wear them. My legs are awful looking & don't tan well either. I guess if I had beautiful young, tan legs then that would be a different story!! In the winter I do wear winter tights all the time with skirts & boots. Or even with my clarks low heals & flats. I think they look cute like that. I think you should wear what you feel comfortable in. I think so much of the fashion is totally for young girls & young women & doesn't always work with everyone! Sometimes the girls on the weather channel this winter had on short skirts or dresses, no hose or tights & they were all above the knees, white, white legs & (just me) but I thought it looked horrible! One day it was like 0 outside, and on our tv their white legs were like neon lights!! My DH came in & he looked at it & the girl had on a short skirt, no hose, bright white legs, & the first thing he said was oh my gosh put something on those legs or get the camera off them they are blinding me!! My sister & I cracked up laughing!

I don't follow anyone's advice on fashion. I do what I think is appropriate for the occassion and what I like.

I do wear hose sometimes depending on what I'm wearing and where I'm going. Everyone should do what they want to. I'm sure you all do.

I rarely wear a skirt short enough to even need pantyhose but I do still wear them when I do. I think nude pantyhose make your look appear finished and dressed...bare legs look sloppy to me....like you had a run in your hose and had to take them off before you got out of your car. My legs are far too pale to ever go without hose....sometimes I wear knee-highs with capris if I am going somewhere I feel it's appropriate.

JR and her crew were talking about a 20 year old performer wearing panty hose and pumps in warm, southern California. They also hated her dress.

I'd wear pumps and pantyhose, but I'm a grandmother. I doubt my 30-something daughter would.

Since when are the "Fashion Police" the last word on dressing? Anytime someone is wearing a short skirt she should have hose on unless it's the summer and you have tan legs. I don't care what age you are bare legs in the winter makes no sense. I love all kinds of tights and hose and I wear a pattern when it looks right with the clothes, besides it's COLD and I want that protection.

I had to wear them 20 years ago before work went busines casual. There is nothing worse than pantyhose on a 110 degree day. When you pulled them off at night, I swear some skin came off with them.

I threw them all away years ago and have no intention of ever putting them on my body again.

I think sheer black hose are nice for women in cold climates when very dressed up. I don't care for nude hose under any circumstance.

Yea. Baby, it's COLD outside -- and few things look sillier (or worse) than some obedient fashion slave shivering in her party finery with bare, blue, goose-pimply legs! Just ridiculous in cold weather -- and many, many women don't have the kind of firm, flawless, tanned gams that look great without hosiery even when it's warm. There's no question that the subtle coverage and silky texture of good hose make a dressy outfit look much more polished, finished, and ladylike. I'm seeing more and more hosiery in fashion mags and stores, and there's no question in my mind that sheer nude hosiery, black sheer hose, or tights in a variety of colors and patterns look much, much better and make much, much more sense than naked legs. Long live hosiery!

I only go without panty hose or tights with a dress if it is in the Summer and I am tan. I think it looks awful to see someone with bare legs in a dress and their feet in high heels especially with no hose. I wear sheer panty hose that have no color. It just makes you look much more put together and finished in my opinion.

I have a friend who makes fun of me (good-naturedly, of course) because I like wearing hose. She said she hasn't worn hose since the '90s. She's more casual than I am, I'd say. I can't wear a pencil skirt and heels without hose. I agree with the other posters who say it looks "unfinished." In my previous job, only one other woman and I wore hose with dresses. In my new gig, I think I'm the only one who wears dresses...it's very laid back here, but that's another story.

Since I'm allowed to dress casually for work & always wear slacks, I don't wear hosiery any more on a daily basis. I sometimes wear tights when it's cold. However, I simply cannot wear a skirt or dress without hose, usually nude. I also have to wear a half-slip, which I know is pretty old-school too.
