Less than two years ago my dryer of a couple decades went out and last year my washer from the same time period went out. I have fairly new washer-dryer. My washer adjusts itself according to the amount of clothes. It is hard to get it to even give me any water with only one item (such as a scarf or blouse). I usually save those very small items like one pair of panty hose or one scarf and wash them together. In a week I will have several items of wash separately either in nylons, blouses, nice T's or even a nice pair of white pants. That also counts for my camisoles or tanks which are worn often of light colors. If they are all light beige, neutral, ivory or white then I put them together and that is maybe/maybe not "separately," but it is with like colors and synthetic and/or sensitive-type fabrics.

I wear enough black in a week to have a load at the end of the week of pants, skirts, cardigans, camisoles, etc. When I say load, I do not mean an overwhelmingly large load, but enough that my washer can sense there are clothes in there and wet them adequately. A very small item like a pair of panty hose would not be sensed so I would get no water.

So that may not be individually but it is separately with like colors and fabrics. I do not use hot water except on towels and bed linens, etc.

I turn my washer to adequate setting such as hand wash, wrinkle control, tap water, etc. It figures it out from there. Dryer does not get panty hose, silk, etc.

Most dress pants and more expensive tops are placed on felt hangers and allowed to be near-dry when tossed into the dryer for no more than 2 minutes on a less hot setting to remove wrinkles.

I do not use chlorine bleaches - ever, but I use vinegar in my "smelly" items or items that are next to the body, such as underwear, bed linens, bath linens. And yes, I do use Downy fabric sheets in the dryer to remove static electricity. I cannot stand and spray each item individually with hair spray or lotion to which I might be allergic to fragrance. I use only Gain laundry liquid because Woolite breaks down the spandex and is more expensive. Plus, I have never noticed a difference in the outcome of my clothing.

Bluing is my best friend for crisp, white clothing such as cotton, linen and even silk, using stritcly according to the bottle directions so I don't have dyed blue clothing but sparkly white and clean.

I have a laundry bag for hosiery and small scarves.

I wash almost all silks in my washer except my better, most expensive silk scarves (the few that came in orange box. I have not attempted that yet but I do handwash them myself in a pan with Gain and cold water, dry and iron.

I often put cashmere sweaters in the washer, but only one at a time because it is the friction of your body heat or rubbing together or against something else that causes pilling.

I use vinegar in my laundry sink with water and scrub/rub the cuffs of light color blouses because the rubbing of your hands, even against your own body, creates oils and they hold dirty and eventually the cuffs will become dingy if you do not pay special attention to those areas. Nice cotton blouse/shirts such as those from Brooks, Chico's, etc., can get quite expensive and show wear fast if not laundered properly.

I follow laundering instructions to a T, except I throw everything in the drier. I can't stand to have wet clothing all over the place

My drier is new, and doesn't get very hot. I'm short so if things shrink a bit it doesn't matter

Diane Gilmans jeans shrink but that's OK with me

So far as laundering things separately, I would do it, until you are sure they don't bleed, You don't want to ruin a batch of clothing

If it is delicate put it in a bag to wash it, They keep things from getting too beat up

Nope, I rarely and I mean rarely, ever wash anything separately. I am like you, I hate to waste all the water on just one little thing. If I had to wait for awhile to wash it until I have more things to make a load that is suitable, then I do. If it is a color that looks like it will bleed a lot, then I am very careful what I put it in with. As for hanging things --- I am a big hanger person! I don't my good tops, slacks, etc. to get dried in the dryer. I am lucky that I have a large room in the basement that I can do this.

If it says wash separately then I do.

I just don't think washing something separately is that big a deal or time consuming. Throw it in, adjust the water level (our machine does that automatically), press the start button and go about my day. It's a 10 second transaction.

I don’t buy anything that requires special laundry instructions. No dry clean only, no hand wash, hang dry, no wash separately. If it can’t be washed in my regular load it stays in the store.

I wash all of my clothing on the gentle cycle, including jeans, putting in like fabrics and/or like colors.

I also always dry everything on no-heat. For clothing I dry on the permanent press cycle, and for towels I dry on the timed cycle.

Only time I wash anything separately is if there is nothing else to put with it, and I want/need that particular garment right away.

When I have a new item that looks like it may bleed (dark or deep color) I soak it in a bucket of water first. Let the excess dye come out, then the item goes into the washer with similar items.

This is easy as I have a laundry room with a sink. I hate hand washing clothes. I use the delicate cycle, putting bras and undies in a lingerie bag. Items are dried on low.

I never wash anything separately. I take a little Woolite and hand wash the item in my bathroom sink. I pay attention to what happens when the garment first gets wet to see if, and how much, color bleeds, and also how the fabric seems to react.. Depending on what happens, I will either continue to hand wash the item each further time, or pop it in the washing machine with a full load.

I wash separately, although depending on the reason I may group with other items of similiar color if it's a color thing, or items without any way to snag if it's a delicate issue.

It has always been a fact of my laundry day to have to wash some things separately! It is time consuming and as far as a waste of water I always use a low water setting on my machine! I also hang some things to dry! I feel I have to do these things to protect our clothing!!

It depends on why. If it's apt to bleed, I'll wash separately.

If it's fragile or an embellished top or graphic tee, I'll turn it inside out to protect the more fragile side. I wash on cold water, short cycle along with similar things.

I'm more concerned about preserving my clothes than using a little extra water or wear and tear on the washer.
