I saw these waxed cotton pieces from Eileen Fisher and thought I would pass them along.

Is waxed cotton a yay or nay for you?

I'd love it only as a waterproof trench coat or a tote or duffle bag. It's very classic in a rugged way.

Don't think it's breathable. I believe waxing is used to make fabric waterproof.

I love a jacket done in waxed cotton. Last season I saw an Eileen Fisher waxed long jacket on sale for a ridiculous low price. I walked away telling myself I didn't need it, but obviously it still bugs me if I am talking about it. 😁

It's a cotton impregnated with a parafin or natural beeswax woven into or applied to the cloth...

In the old days, especially in the West, the cotton coats the cowboys wore (thinking of the long dusters) were rubbed with beeswax to create a waterproof film on the cotton coat. It was also applied to other coats, hats, etc to work clothing when out in the field.

Today, it still serves the same purpose, it resists water, but is applied differently. Feels a little strange, like there's a light coat of rubber on the cloth.

I personally don't mind it for outerwear, but a firm no to any regular clothing...

I think it depends on the piece and am seeing it pop up on my favorite investment denim jean brands like AG, 7 and J Brand for fall/winter. It has a look of leather, less expensive and definitely not as heavy. Can be nice alternative if you live in cold climate. Eileen Fisher jackets nice.

I really don't care for the maintenance of a waxed item.

Very labor intensive and time consuming.

if the quality is good, it looks really nice. if not, it feels and looks cheap. i have 2 pairs of skinny jeans in waxed cotton and they both look great. i wear them in the cooler months though. not because they're a warm fabric, but because they look good with sweaters and leather jackets.
