Belt this!

I bought this cotton dress because I liked everything about it and thought it would be comfortable but it looks like a maternity dress on me so I think I need to belt it. What kind of belt would be suitable?

Thanks for replying. I was thinking that too but not sure because although I'm slim ,(hourglass leaning towards pear) I'm short-waisted.

I was rethinking my obi idea too because there seems to be too much excess fabric for that esp if it is a heavier gauge....cute dress so where is Lola as she always has the answer.

With all that material a tight cinch style belt would be too much. Maybe something like this that would set on top of the hips more.

Something like this would be super cute. You could even go with a more sheer, lighter weight blouse instead of the denim and forget the belt.

Thanks! That's a great option but I bought this dress because it has elbow-length sleeves so that I wouldn't have to wear another layer to cover my arms. Certainly when the weather cools down (it's 100 degrees now) I can see layering it as shown in the picture and maybe wearing boots with it. 😊

I can only speak for myself. No way would I belt that dress. If i wanted something slimmer, I wouldn't buy that dress. This dress is cute and it was designed to have movement and to be full. It doesn't look anything at a a maternity dress it's fit &flare style. I like it a lot but I don't wear dresses that short.

Thanks for your input! I too thought this was a fit and flare dress and that it had movement, based on the way it's shown in the photo, but it really doesn't, it kind of hangs there and looks shapeless. I guess I should have returned it but I was undecided until I had worn it to work and then I just thought I'd make the best of it and try to make it work.

As far as the length goes, I think it looks short because the model is tall. I'm 5'5" and it covers my knees.

Personally, I'd use a red or yellow one, but I don't know your palette or what kind of metals you prefer.

This is R Lauren, Belts with stretch in back are comfortable and give a better fit. This one with silver tone or gold tone.

Right now, there aren't a lot of choices. In a few weeks we'll have an explosion of new things in the store.

I get my belts from R Lauren, Dillards, White House Black Market, Chicos, Vince Camuto, and amazon. I always buy leather. The belt should look as good as the clothes.

My sister has a similar dress and it came with a belt. Her dress is navy and white and the belt is a very thin patent navy belt.

I think a thin belt would be a lot better looking than a wide belt, too. Many times the thickness of the fabric will govern how wide of a belt can be worn with a piece of clothing. The thicker the material, the wider the belt can be. For example, you see this with heavy overcoats and wide belts.

So you're advocating a narrow belt rather than a wide one?

I love everyone's suggestions but I'm beginning to think that @SilleeMee might have a point, given the amount of fabric I'd have to cinch in. I do love that look and have worn a denim shirt tied just like that over a striped tank Maxi dress.

Decisions, decisions... 😄

@Texasmouse,I haven't seen the dress on you. If it's big get it cut down. When I belt something a little more wide, I pull the excess to the sides and just a little to the back.

You could always do a rope belt with a knot on the side and white sneekers if that's your style.

I always belt. If I don't, the perception is that I am solid from the bust to the lower hip. Not so.

Look on amazon for "designer belts". Wear what "lights" you up. If you don't you won't enjoy it!
