I store my wool things at the dry cleaners........take them in the spring to be cleaned, they store them for the summer, and I call them in the fall when I'm ready to pick them up. They have everything pressed and steamed and looking perfect.

I have limited storage space in the bedroom . I have been keeping my sweaters in the plastic bags they arrived in or in a general purpose storage bag. I think I need some stackable covered boxes to store , organize and protect my sweaters. what do you do for storage and to keep moths away? does cedar really protect? please share some good websites to browse for storage box ideas.

During the off-season I store mine in "Natural Cotton/PEVA Storage Bags" in a plastic bin with lavender sachets. (Bags and sachets were ordered from the container store.)

While I am wearing them, I air them out overnight, then store them in ziploc bags. This is the first year I haven't found any holes in my cashmere sweaters.

One thing I won't be doing again is using Space Bags. I took out a bunch of hand knits and they are in terrible shape - the designs are all crushed. Everything has to be soaked and reblocked.

Don't use mothballs or moth cakes inside your woolens. The chemical (Naphthalene) is carcinogenic to humans. Inhaling Naphthalene can cause cancer in humans. You have to launder your woolens before you wear them if you store them in moth balls/cakes.

Besides the fact that Naphthalene is a human (and pet) carcinogen, moth balls and moth cakes MELT on your clothes and that can destroy your woolens as the melted chemical bonds with the wool making it impossible to wash out.

Plastic containers with cedar blocks is a good way to store woolens. I've always stored my wool sweaters/scarves this way and have never had a problem with insects invading my stored items.

Hope this helps.

I have a storage bench with seat that lifts that my Dad stained for me when I was a little girl that I have sweaters in. I also have a very large cedar chest from one of my grandmother's. I have a chest of drawers that's full of sweaters too. All of them are lovely, no problems ever with moths (or stink bugs). I have cashmere, wool, acrylics.

I think I have too many sweaters but I'm keeping all of them!

We just had my mom's 1930 Lane Cedar Chest restored. My dad's 19?? hudson's Bay Blanket was stored in it for over 70 years and emerged from it in absolutely PERFECT condition. So if you want to be absolutely, 100% sure, you just can't beat a real cedar chest. CAUTION- if you acquire a real antique cedar chest, be sure to have the lid adapted to be slam proof, to prevent yourself or any children that might get near it from being injured or worse by the lid slamming unexpectedly.

Two children recently smothered to death in an older Lane cedar chest that had been recalled, but was purchased second-hand and the owners didn't know about the recall and the problem with the chest not being able to be opened from the inside.

If anyone purchases a cedar chest second hand, make sure that it isn't one of the Lane chests that has been recalled. These are very dangerous to have in a home where children are present.

All of the closets in our home are cedar lined - my husband did this years ago - bought a special saw & did all the work! Our master closet is like a room - we had California Closets design it after he installed the cedar. Our daughters bedroom closet was also custom designed. Our coat/guest closet is also cedar lined!
