Donating Prom Dresses

I know, prom season is long over. But I found this dress last night. From Lord and Taylor, when I was looking at the shaper suggestion posted in my thread. It's an X Scape dress, same brand as my "Jane Treacy" dress. It is a $289 dress, I got it for 43!!! Free shipping too via Shop Runner.

They had one left in a size 10, so I snagged it. I Googled for organizations that collect prom dresses for girls who have a hard time affording them. Becca's Closet is one, based in FL. A teenage girl started it, she was killed in a car accident shortly after. There are many to donate to. My local high school even has one in memory of a deceased teacher.

I don't want the dress to sit somewhere for too long. Most apparently do start collecting for prom in the fall and for homecoming too. As long as they can store them I suppose they can collect year round.

As I talked about in a thread elsewhere, my night out with my Mom...our sparkly dresses and everything about it...was so special. That and all the kindness from strangers I have received over the last three years. So I believe I was directed to this, this is a pay it forward act of kindness.

I'm so excited to be able to do this, I hope the girl who wears it feels like a princess.

Fashion and bargain hunting, for a purpose. Feeling special and being able to do that for others is why fashion matters, imo. This is the dress, it is a current style of prom dresses but still has modesty. The back has a cutout. Silver rhinestones on the front.

I think that was very kind of you. I'm sure they have a safe place to store the dresses while it is not prom season. I finally donated my wedding gown from 1982. Held on to it all these years, only wore it once. (thankfully). I did the same, investigated online and sent it to a church that cleans and stores them until someone is in need.

Also if anyone has evening bags/clutches, appropriate jewelry-these organizations take those too. Some take gently worn shoes and unopened makeup.

This is a better photo of the detail of the dress I am donating. They want current styles from about the last five years.

@Greeneyedlady21 that is a beautiful dress and gift from your heart.I believe that some girl will feel like a princess in that gown at prom...too bad they don't post something about their evening to the donor.It would be extra special to know the girl who wears the gown had a wonderful time.

@dex I was thinking the exact same thing. Something like this should be anonymous, and I want zero credit or thanks from the girl..but I would love to know. Would love to see a photo of her in the dress, eventually.

I have no idea what's worn to homecoming these days, if this dress is too formal.

That is a great buy on that dress & very sweet to buy it & donate.

I just finished having 7 dresses dry cleaned that have been hanging in my closet.

As soon as I see a place to donate them they are ready to go. By the time I saw an announcement in my local paper about donating this year, it was too late to get them cleaned. So I am ready for next year.

They are beautiful dresses. I had fun helping shop for them & they were beautiful when they were worn. I hope they get to go out, again!

One of our churches has a prom event where they offer donated dresses.

Another thing you can do is speak with the gudiance dept at your local high school. They're always aware of need.

True!!! Women don't think about that, I never would have. My girls and my niece and some other friends had been in scores of weddings in recent years and when they were talking about where and how to donate their bridesmaid's dresses....which can all double as prom dresses...and some short formals; a teacher friend suggested that they call the local h.s. They did and a guidance counselor was thrilled and worked with them. They used a steamer to steam the wrinkles out of the dresses and they held a "prom dress party". It wasn't publicized, the guidance department selected the girls and girls came and tried on dresses and chose what they wanted. There was food and some of the women donated evening bags and costume jewelry. It was one time thing but they loved it and they liked meeting the girls. As I recall, one of the women donated the remaining dresses and bags to local church that has a prom gown event.

The dress arrived yesterday and wow it is gorgeous. The crystals really are aurora borealis more than silver. The bodice is loaded with them and they are just scattered as you go down. Beautiful quality dress.

I am seeking advice for a bag. I have set a budget of $15 or less, because otherwise I would go crazy trying to make it perfect for the girl. I need it fast because next week I'm on my mission to find a place to donate it. So unless they say to keep it until Sept I will need to have the bag ready to go.

I picked out this one, it's 14 something. Is it too sparkly with the dress? I would guess many teenage girls like sparkle. I don't know any or have any kids so I don't know...looked for a bag with aurora borealis, no luck.

I thought she could get silvery shoes

Thanks for posting this. My youngest daughter just moved out and there are prom/homecoming dresses in the closet she left behind as well as some from her older sister.

Through the website I was able to find a local chapter of Becca's Closet and will send the dresses to them to be enjoyed again by another young lady.
