Question about Maxi Dress Length

Where do you like your maxi dresses to hit on your legs? I'm 5'3-1/2" but I'm long legged. I can never order petite pants or they're too short. Some maxis I've bought in the past are petite, but most are regular length (various lines). I have some now that are fitting me about 2-1/2 to 3" above the ankle bone. I'm so used to wearing them it doesn't bother me. But at an event the other night I noticed most maxis hit lower, almost, but not quite, skimming the ground.

So what is your opinion? Where do you like yours to hit?

I only wear flats - so just at the top of my ankle bone is the best length for me.

I like mine to hit just above my ankle bone. I don't like them to almost skim the ground...then I end up tripping or stepping on the hem. I'm 5'2 1/2" with short legs so I always buy a petite lenth in maxis. I only wear flats, too.

I rarely have a choice, because I'm tall and I take what I can get! Hitting at the ankle is ideal because I like to wear ballet flats or sandals.

Around the ankle bone or the very tops of my feet at the longest. I wear flats in the summer so I usually have to hem the maxis that I buy.

I'm tall also and will settle for any length in cotton material. I actually like the maxis that have side slits.

On maxis I like them as long as possible. I'm about 5'10" so ideally may maxi dress should hit me between the bottom of my calf and my ankle. I love a long dress.

I am 5'4" but I like to wear heels, so I prefer mine to hit at the top of my foot.....

I guess the ankle bone is the winner! That's where I like mine to hit also. Mainly only wear summer type maxis so I also wear with a flat or flip flop, nice beachy feel

I was just thinking about this as I posted my "Hello Yellow" thread.

I saw this skirt at Talbots, and it's called "Classic Linen Maxi Skirt."

Based on the length, I would not call this a maxi skirt- more of a midi, IMO.

I like my "maxi" to hit between the hem of that skirt and the top of the shoe ankle strap. Anything any longer is too difficult to walk in. I don't wear heels. Nothing over 1-1/2 inch. In a maxi, when I need to walk up or down stairs, or hit the escalator I feel like Little House on the Prairie, gathering up my skirt so I won't step on it or get it caught in anything.

I am 5'5" and most of my height is in my legs. When I want a skirt or dress to hit me above the ankle, I will sometimes shop the petite department.

To me a MIDI is mid-calf.

Hi @lolakimono! I agree with you. I wouldn't call this a maxi. Some of my dresses fit between this length and the very top of the shoe. I guess they're just a tad shorter than a maxi. I wear them with both flats and heels I will keep wearing them, but I'll try to find some longer length ones in the future. A few summers ago I found a really cute one. It didn't come in petite, but I talked myself into it. I wore it to a dressy outing and noticed the hem was dirty. It had been that way since we parked and walked along the sidewalk! I wish I were a little bit taller sometimes!

I like them a few inches above the ground. Klutz that I am sometimes I'd manage to trip over the hem & possibly fall if it were any longer.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I guess I'll resign myself to the fact that I have some that are longer and some a little shorter. The most important thing to me is that I enjoy wearing them - and I do!

The word "maxi" is moving target. I'm 5'3" and I also have long legs for my height. I live in maxi dresses in the summer. Some come just to my anke bone and that is the length that I prefer because I like showing off all my cute sandals. Some come an inch or two longer and just my toes show. That's fine. But I have had a few that are "floor grazers". I don't like that lenghth at all.

No, that's not a maxi. Not even close. That's a classic midi length.

I'm 5'8 and have very large thighs so I prefer all my dresses and skirts to hit slightly below the knee or to the top of my ankle. I love maxis because of the length and most have very comfortable, breathable fabric. I get hot very easily, and now that I'm starting to get those dreaded hot flashes, maxi dresses are an easy choice.

I'm 5-3 and I'll take any maxi length that doesn't touch the ground. Petite maxis are hard to find and when I can find them I'd like them to be skimming my ankles.
