Whatever happened to beige??

In the summer I love pairing beige and white together. It is so clean and fresh looking! I am having an etremely difficult time this season trying to find beige. Beige pants, beige shoes, beige tops. It is a terrific neutral! What happened to beige designers?

I like the color. Have a couple leather skirts in beige, even a skirt suit. I like wearing the skirts with animal print tops. Here is an example.

If you have a Talbots Outlet near you, they have an ankle pant as well as city shorts. More will come into retail during "Summer 2", which is the darker light weight colors..

Khaki is alive and well being used as a uniform of sorts for many retail positions.

I just got a couple of things that look like beige:

LandsEnd chinos called pale khaki - only one item comes up when I search on beige.

SG cardigan that looks like beige & white ... called tan (a bit lighter than the pants)

And ... beige sandals called "cork."

I typed in "beige" at Chico's and it returned several items ...

I typed "beige" here ... only non-fashion items.

At Amazon ... more than 58,000 beige items come up on women's apparel.

JCP has over 800 items in women clothing that come up with a beige search.

@Deneesy Dream Jeanne's (Quacker Factory) pants / leggings in the khaki choice is really beige, not khaki.

I just got a beige Denim & Co. shirt that was called "stone". I think beige exists but they called it many different things. There is apparently prejudice against ordinary good old beige.

Sometimes when you try to order from a catalogue and the names are midnight...Well, ok. Is that midnight blue or midnight like black? I'm all for using all the crayons in the box, but sometimes we need to name a color something we all recognize. Do you know how many shades of taupe there are?

The color is still readily available, but usually under other names (as mentioned above). The fashion industry has been moving away from the term "beige" for a while. It's still a great, popular color, but usually under a different name.

Consider the alternate definitions and synonyms for beige:

dull

insipid

anemic

boring

tired

characterless

lacking distinction

More and more in entertainment and culture, the term beige is used in a negative, figurative manner. It has not disappeared in fashion or beauty industry by any means, but it gets used less & less. Use the term around millennials and watch the reaction you get.

Nothing better than a great pair of khaki chino pants...a little roll up at the ankle in summer...rolled down in fall/winter. Certainly not boring, dull or tiring. It depends what you wear with them.

J Crew and Banana Republic (see online) sell lots of khaki pants to millennials. Maybe they're figuring out that neutrals are a great addition to their wardrobe.

@Shanus I don't think you got my point (or I didn't express it well). The color is great, but just like you just did in your post, you called it "khaki" not beige. It's the term that has changed, not the color. That's why I said the other posts mentioned all those alternate names for the color, which is more & more how the color is named in fashion now (stone, soft tan, off-white, khaki, etc.). I never called the color boring, I was referring to the term "beige."

Same thing with "bone" for shoes.........type that in on here and you won't see anything even remotely that color....

I had to figure out what they were calling off white shoes now a days....LOL

Seriously, I'm so surprised they make that color/tone

part of their signature looks....they really embrace the neutrals.

Not very many people can make 'stone' look sexy.

There is just a zillion variations of the color beige. Some browner, some yellower, some pinker, and some grayer. Way too many shades to choose if you really start looking at paint colors say from different brands or even say carpeting too. Boring beige is not so boring anymore it seems with all its variations... I guess that goes for furniture and clothing too...

I totally agree with you.

I guess this season it is all about fruity, flowery and geometric prints. Dolce & Gabanna started the trend with their pineapple and bananas Carmen Miranda like dresses.Which can be fun.

I also wonder why beige has become nude, stone, taupe and so on. I think that it is a staple and love it with white as well🌻

I do not think "stone" or "khacki" are the same as beige. Stone is more colorless than beige and khacki is more tan than beige. The walls of my house are a true beige - it is a very rich and pretty color. If you would hold up an srticle of clothing that is stone next to those beige walls the stone would appear virtually colorless, if you'd hold up khacki next to the beige the khacki appears very much more yellow - much more tan than beige.

I think a true beige when worn with white is very pretty. Actually my MOH wore beige and white in my wedding and it was lovely.

In post #2 Stylish lady posted a picture of an outfit and I would call that skirt ecru or stone - not beige.
