Is anyone wearing jackets/blazers under coats?

I am finding that I just can't do jackets under a coat anymore. It just feels so bulky. While my jackets get a great workout during the spring and fall months (and sometimes with an added layer of a shawl before it gets really cold) I most layer with sweaters, knit tops, shirts/blouses and cardigans under my winter coats.

It may be that the style of coats changed.... Remember swing coats? Everything fit under those but of course they are "out". Today coats are a slimmer fit, both through the body and sleeve and just not conducive to heavy layering with comfort.

I never see young women in blazers. They seem to be favored by the over 50 crowd.

Same problem for me, my heavier blazers don't fit under my coats too well. I have several capes and a swing raincoat for layering with blazers. Mostly it depends on what I'm going to be doing. If it just to get from the car to a restaurant or meeting, I go with the cape even if it isn't always warm enough. If it for shopping where I need to keep my coat on, I wear something lighter under my coat.

For me, wool and cordoroy blazers seem to get the least wear in the winter for this exact reason. Just when I want the warmth too!

I love jackets, but use them as outerwear in spring and fall. All I'll wear under a coat is a light thin sweater to layer. I don't like the bulky look- it reminds me when as a kid, mom dressed me so thickly, my arms couldn't move well

I did that with my kids too! They looked like little Michelin men

I never wear a jacket under a coat, for the reasons already mentioned.

I only wear jackets in the spring and fall (although fall lasts into December here sometimes).

When I was working, I sometimes wore a raincoat over a jacket. Or, a coat over a two piece suit.

I love swing coats. Sometimes during the Spring I still wear some of my swing coats. I get compliments on them sometimes.

I do not even have a coat. I wear blazers all year as outer wear although I will admit I have a couple of rain coats for emergencies.

Are you in a warmer climate, DiAnne? I have to wear coats and LOVE them but not over jackets. I love a jacket for work but not during the winter months.

I wear a blazer or a jacket most days, and I don't have a problem with them fitting over my winter coat. I have one of the D&C fleece toggle coats w/hood (an older style, not the current one with sherpa lining), and I can layer with ease.

DiAnne ~ I'm moving where you live! Do you really not get weather cold enough to warrant a coat? I think I am going to cry. If it isn't absolutely freezing, it's snowing. I am so tired of winter.

Debbie to answer your question, I live is cashmere all winter for that very reason. I hate feeling like I am wearing a sausage casing!

Magic, like you I live in cashmere. I do sometimes feel a bit under-dressed for work (very conservative) without a jacket but it is what it is. I have tried to wear more blouses which really dress up a look as do skirts and dresses.

I am in the Pacific Northwest just across the Lake from Seattle. It rarely gets really cold or really hot just a little damp....

Often. In the cold northeast, I need the warmth of a jacket as part of my indoor outfit and I definitely need a warm coat as outerwear. I have several of Dennis Basso's faux fur reversible toggle coats. I always wear the coats with the furry side in. The coats run big and the inner faux fur just glides over any blazer, sweater etc that I wear underneath.

Reever - Not really. It hasn't rained in days here (don't tell anyone). I just run between car and store or where ever I am going. I used to commute by bus into Seattle and I would then wear a light weight full length rain coat over my work clothes while waiting at bus stop, etc. If we occasionally get colder weather I just layer.

never wear a jacket under a winter coat. way too bulky. if I am wearing a suit or a separate blazer I wear a wool ruana I purchased at Talbot's several years ago. The weather here seldom gets so cold that this is not sufficient to get from where I am parking to my inside destination. I do have my full length Dennis basso faux fur if the event is fancy enough.
