Which is better Modal or Pima cotton?

I haven't purchased either yet.....which do you prefer? Worth the extra cost?

I prefer pima cotton because of ethical reasons. Modal, a form of man-made cellulose fiber, is often manufactured with harsh chemicals which are often times dumped into the environment. I know, just what you wanted to hear....another chemical slamming. That's just how I feel about it. But otherwise both fabrics are very soft and feel good on your skin. Modal does not shrink as much as pima and since modal has a more silky finish, it tends to exhibit less pilling than pima.

Prefer pima cotton for the same reasons that others have pointed out. I like both modal and pima but I find that pima is cooler and more breathable in the summer too. I highly recommend Isaac's pima cotton tees. Very silky and luxurious. Great for layering too because of their smooth finish. Your jackets etc just glide over the fabric!

I vote for pima cotton. I find anything with modal pills. Pima cotton has a silky feel to it and stands the test of time.

Modal pills when it's blended with other fibers like cotton. This kind of modal blend is very popular in clothing. 100%modal fabric is expensive so it's usually blended for this reason as well as giving more body or stiffness to the garment. Modal is very drapey.

What is Modal fabric made of?

Modal (textile) Modal is a type of rayon, a semi-synthetic cellulose fiber made by spinning reconstituted cellulose, in this case often from beech trees. Modal is used alone or with other fibers (often cotton or spandex) in household items such as pajamas, towels, bathrobes, underwear and bedsheets.

Pima cotton:

Pima cotton is a generic name for extra-long staple (ELS) cotton grown in the U.S., Australia, Peru and in very limited production in a few other locations around the world. Pima is from the gossypium barbadense species, compared to gossypium hirsutum, to which upland cotton belongs.

It depends on your preferce. Cotton breaths, model not so much.

Actually neither are really good for our environment. Cotton fiber is not sustainable, is labor intensive to make and also requires many chemicals to manufacture as does modal. Cotton demands the use of a lot of fresh water. One very good alternative fabric is 100% bamboo lyocell, not to be confused with rayon from bamboo.

I like them both but think I prefer cotton/modal. The reason being the modal does not have the stretch Pima has.

Hi, @ladyroxanne. I got a great t-shirt from Halston in cotton/modal and am just loving it. Halston has lots of them. Just as long as it's not Liquid Knit for me. Love my Pima's, too.

I personally prefer modal or cotton modal blend.

QVC used to sell a brand called Freelance ... modal pants, tops and skirs. And - I think I also had a dress. It's been years ... I'm still wearing the pants and tops. No fading, no pilling. They've been washed hundreds of times.

Pima cotton is very nice - I have quite a few tops from LandsEnd that are Pima. Modal is a rayon fiber. Pima is a cotton fiber.

I was excited to see this thread as so many of the t-shirts (not cheap) I have purchased in the last couple of years have pilled terribly. I had been thinking of posting on this board to get recommendations for such and after reading these informed responses, think I now understand why I've had this issue. The pilling of t-shirts drives me insane because you can't tell until after you've worn it awhile and then it's too late to return.

I get so much great information from these boards. Thanks, ladies, for sharing your knowledge!
