Closet is almost bare...good will trip

I started to clean out bathroom (makeup and lotions etc) and clothing to go to good will. I have got to start buying less and start buying things that I like instead of these great buys that never get the tags off or I wear once. I know what looks okay on my body type but still buy stupid stuff. I just got rid of all my liquid knit. It just clings to my bad spots and made the mistake of wearing a piece on vacation and almost had a heat stroke. I am not a fan of maxi dresses because I feel I am wearing a nightgown and yet they were still in my closet. I have got to change my ways.

Great job, Aubegirl! I started this last year and will continue on into this year. Some (me) get caught up in a "good deal" or this is what is "in" this year! I'm trying for "less is more" and changing my ways also.

Thanks for the inspiration. I started doing the same thing, but not as intensely as I truly needed to do. I'm back on track! You've inspired me. I need to be more honest in my assessment of what I'm actually going to wear and how much I need. I'm in 3 big closets and armoirs and still overflowing. Ridiculous. Shame on me. Back to work on ridding myself of the excess. Thank you.

When I worked, I think there was a "security blanket" feeling of having a full closet.

Now, it just confuses me.

Minimalist lifestyle, Yesterday donated puffer coat and few other items shelter. Show you what i mean, At this time own one winter coat. Do have lighter all weather North Face. Do agree! Dislike liquid knit. Same with makeup very minimal. Thank you!

I congratulate you....!!.....I have been trying to cut down also.......it is HARD to decided to donate or be rid of some of these things...............good luck.!! I have to stop saying to myself....."but i might want to use this one day".....and

end up holding on to things.....a few years back my MIL passed away and i had to clean out the house....it is amazing all the things one saves..........but it did teach me to clear things out sooner...i don't want my kids to have to sort through alot of "stuff" after i go.............so i try to keep up with papers, filing and "stuff" and to keep only what i really need...and it is HARD!!...

I have PURGE ENVY. I cannot seem to do it. I cannot let go. I feel guilty for buying in the first place 0R I might need it OR it still looks good, or whatever keeps me from getting rid of whatever is taking up space.

I just finished a whole purge - it feels so good to look into closets or drawers etc and see extra room. It is wonderful when I go to my closet to put away the laundry and there is ample room. I have no difficulty getting rid of things but I do buy what I don't need. I am inspired to wear what I have and not to buy anything new.

One of my criteria when I was going thru my closet was - Do I have a nice top for each skirt and do I have a nice bottom for each nice top. If I couldn't make a complete outfit - say for instance the top that goes with a certain skirt had gotten faded and I don't have another top to match that skirt - then out the skirt went. In previous years I may have said I will get a top to match that skirt , then never do so it sits unworn in my closet.

Good for you @chiclet! That is what I want to do... but everytime I start I just can not seem to let loose of things. It is a very powerful feeling to let go of items no longer purposeful and to let others have them that might need them.

Was thinking that what I need is someone working with me to pack and remove boxes as I select stuff to get rid of!

Half my time is spent moving things around and packing.

With the closet, I'm folding and packing.

If I had help, it would go so much faster and less time to change my mind

I had to throw away my navy blue and my grey skirts because they were both too old & worn out . I HAVE TO replace them as they have several tops that I wore with them. However, it has been weeks and I haven't replaced them yet.

Witchy Woman, I would love to help you. Purging closet's & drawers is my favorite hobby. I love being able to open drawers & closest doors & being able to see everything that I own.

I don't want my DC to have to go through my things like I had to go through my mom's things 10 months ago.

Clutter drives me nuts & I like to make it as easy as I can for my DH when he vacuums.

Good job to all of you that are getting rid of unused things or trying to. Even 15 minutes here & there will have great results.

In cleaning out my closet dresser drawers I actually found things I did not know I had or had forgotten I had or were hid under something else. I donated the shoe stretchers (never really helped). If shoe did not fit right when I bought it, stretching, new insoles etc never worked. When I cleaned out the linen closet I found a rug I really needed and forgot I had. I cannot say this has been fun and I had to really make myself get rid of the stuff but I almost feel like I can breathe better....Now I need to make better decisions. Sometimes when I am down I buy thinking it will give me a lift but need to change that.

Over the years I've gotten much better at purging my closets but you would think at 59 I wouldn't make "stupid" purchases anymore and that I would have learned my lesson. If only that were true. I take clothes to a consignment shop so at least I get some money out of them. They are not taking Spring clothes until March 1 and Summer April 1 this year but I have a pile of clothes to try on to potentially get rid of. I have 37 pieces they may be leaving my closing in the next couple of months. That is obscene and I need to do better. I purge my closets twice a year. Right now I have a "freeze" on buying clothes especially 3/4 length sleeves - I didn't realize how many I own. Tackling closets can be hard but keep up the good work!

I have a blue hanger that I put in my closet after I purge. If I wear something and I still like it and it still fits comfortably I put it on the left side of my closet. If I don't feel comfortable in or am tired of it I leave it on the right. At the end of the season I take the right side and put in the back of my closet. When that season rolls around again and it's time to take those clothes to the consigment shop I try that "discard" pile on again to make sure I don't want them anymore and then I get rid of them. I know some people turn the hangers around on things they where but I have really old closets that hangers don't fit well in. It really helps.

Clothing, makeup, household items.....it's just a wonderful feeling to go through and remove what you don't need.

I totally relate!!!!

Last weekend I tackled my closet. This is about the third time in a year.

I am donating probably 20 pants and maybe 25 tops. Some are fairly new

and others I have been reluctant to part with because I kept saying to myself:

I may wear this....

but then I don't. I have definitely cut back on buying impulsively from the Q

as well. I have so many pants still---

All week I found myself wearing some pretty basic Henley tops from Costco!!!

I am very comfortable and came to realize I really do have simple tastes most of the time.

I still have to deal with jackets and coats. That is going to be a challenge. But once I'm on a roll, I will be able to do it!

Yesterday, I cleaned out my pantry!!!!!! There were so many herbs and spices with expiration dates of several years ago.

It bothered me how much I had spent and how little I had really used.

I am definitely working on downsizing what I buy.
