It's been many years since I attended a prom.

My dresses and my daughter's were similar with bare shoulders, long full skirts. Now that I have a granddaughter attending a prom, I see that styles have changed dramatically. Her dress is long with spaghetti straps and cut high in front, which is fine, however the sides are bare! There are huge areas that are bare skin. I wanted to ask her if she planned on wearing a t-shirt under the dress.

I realize that girls want what's in style, but when did things change so drastically? These young girls are not Hollywood stars on the red carpet. Obviously, I had no vote in choosing her dress! Sad that girls feel that they need to show so much skin when attending a formal dance. Are parents ok with this?

My DD and I also wore long dresses, however there were no huge cut outs that showed bare skin or plunging backs that went to the butt. In other words, we didn't look like we were Hollywood wannabe's on the red carpet.
Then you haven't seen it all yet! How about a 2 piece....picture a jeweled bra style top...sort of something out of a Cleopatra movie....and a full length long slim skirt bottom with a V-cut out on the back side of waist, just below the waist band, and the bottom of the V goes down to the crack!....Yup!....saw it because I've been working at a shop where they sell thousands of prom gowns...difficult to look at on a hanger...cannot even imagine it on a 17-18 year old...but it was sold!

What I don't understand is the really short short dresses. When picking my son up from the HS Homecoming dance, all the girls' dresses were really short and they were constantly pulling them down. How much fun can that be, to be tugging at your dress all night?

Until about three years ago, I attended prom as a chaperon. The cut out dresses have been on the market for maybe as much as eight or ten years. The cut out areas got so drastic that the principal required all the girls to bring a picture of their dress and be approved. That happened because some girls had worn some overly revealing dresses which the parents had let them out in, of course!

If I had a daughter attending a school that tried dictating what she could wear, I'd raise holy heck!

Every year we hear of several stories locally where girls are turned away from the prom for violating dress code. Then the "outraged" parents immediately cry to the media. In this case, it is a Catholic school who is requesting to see the dress ahead of time. It's in the handbook so why it's suddenly a shock to anyone is mind boggling. They are trying to prevent other girls from being turned away at the door because it happens every single year.

They might as well learn a valuable lesson: your dress will be dictated in certain environments. Certain clothing is acceptable in certain situations. Would I love to wear yoga pants to work every day? Heck, yeah. Or what if I wore a short skirt with a top revealing a good part of my breasts? Not a good idea of course and one that would come with severe consequences.

Dress codes are not new.

I really don't see the need for cut outs or plunging necklines or plunging back lines. Homecoming everyone wore short dresses, but then again, there were guidelines about how short.

Skimpier formal dresses were gaining in popularity when my daughters went to their proms in the late 90's. Both girls knew better than to even expect to leave this house in a skimpy dress, but thankfully, that was not their style then, or even now that they're in their 30's. I am very saddened to see prom pictures of girls in dresses with slits up to there, and cutouts down to there, and thinking that these people I know personally, allow their daughters to leave the house dressed that way. When it's family, or a friend I know very well, I have questioned the dress choice, and moms answer is usually "that's the style these days". I am not pro-Duggar, but at least from all I've ever seen, the girls in that family do have respect for themselves, and wear modest clothing at all times. My opinion is that respect and modesty needs to be promoted more, and parents should set a standard, not just allow choices based on style, and the trend of that's what everyone else is doing.

I attended my last HS prom in 1972. I wore a backless prom dress. It had a white knife pleat skirt...formal floor length and an attached halter top that buttoned behind my neck in a floral print There were ruffles at the front neckline..so no cleavage. The skirt came to my waist, so it wasn't cut low.

Because my hair covered the buttons at the back of my neck...My dress looked 100% topless from the back. I remember my classmates coming up to me to make sure I was covered from the front.

I went to Catholic school. I suppose this dress covered more than the mini skirts that were in style back then, We wore our skirts short. It was impossible to even find longer ones. I am only 5'1". On the taller girls, the skirts were even shorter.

Every era has their share of fashions that young girls gravitate towards. It's just that over time, more and more skin is being shown. I was risqué, but modest, because my back was shown. Today, the clothing is very skimpy and wardrobe malfunctions are common.

The Catholic school in PA, where I live that has been in the news, is trying to make sure the dresses are modest. The newest fad of lined see though lace where it appears that bare skin in showing is what's causing the stir. I suppose it's difficult to tell what is skin and what is not.

Pretty soon, girls will be spray paining their bodies instead of wearing clothing. This seems to the new "in."
