Black top with navy skirt

I hear a lot of the hosts saying black with navy looks good - what do you Ladies think? I have nice black silky cardi and tank but cannot seem to find midi length black skirt - did see a nice kind of dark navy skirt which I do not own yet but am thinking about it. What do you Ladies think. I would pair it with black hose and shoes. Thank you.

I heard Jill say that to one of the designers (don't remember which one), and I felt like he cringed. I wouldn't do it, but if it were styled exactly right it would probably look okay. I wouldn't feel like I'd be able to put the two colors together properly. I've seen it that looked good though.

Navy and black look hideous together. I don't own anything in navy. I consider it the worst color. I don't consider it a neutral or a stand alone color. Just god awful.

You post frequently about your wardrobe of jeans. Do you wear dark denim jeans?

I wear black tops fairly frequently when I wear navy denim jeans, medium or dark wash. I think black with navy in other fabrics looks like a mistake.

Those are the last two colors that I would wear together. Sadly I have bought black garments and in the light they are navy blue. One skirt I sent back.

I like black and navy together. I think one of the keys is that the navy not be too dark. If it is, it looks like a mistake and that you're trying to make it look as though you're wearing all black. But when there's a bit of contrast, so that it's clearly navy and black, it is a nice combination. (P.S. I don't consider navy to be "god awful" -- it's my favorite summer neutral. Oops, I guess I consider it a neutral too!)

jonbon--you took the words right out of my mouth! See?! Navy and black can be such a smart and chic look, but you need some distinction between the two colors, as well as varying the textures and fabrics. Contrast is the name of the game, in design! I'd try them on together dulwich--if you think they work well together, chances are they do!

I don't wear black and navy together. The only exception would be blue jeans and a black turtleneck (ala Steve Jobs).

Another combo I do not like is brown and navy.

The only time I wear navy and black is when I wear dark wash jean with a black top. In fact, that is basically my go to uniform.
