Poor Michael Kors...he's been in the news recently. One of articles (below) focuses on the rise & fall of popular brands.

Reasons:

1. Everyone is wearing Michael Kors
2. Inventories are piling up

3. The strategy could backfire (outlet vs dept store prices)

Can't help any of the outlet brands will suffer the same consequences. They mention Tommy Hilfiger, Juicy Couture, Jordache and Coach...hopefully Dooney will somehow dodge this bullet. More detail in article below.

You can't compare Dooney to MK; Dooney is just bags and not even a fraction as popular as MK. The article is correct, MK is everywhere. Half the woman walking down any street are carrying MK bags or wearing MK apparel. While I happen to love my Dooneys and I have several; you don't see many of them on the street. And...that's a good thing. Because I wouldn't be caught dead carrying a MK bag because everyone would assume I bought it at Marshall's. I'm no business maven but even I knew that adding a discount store line to the brand would be the kiss of death for MK. And let us not forget the knock offs! That's what almost killed Coach and the knock off manufacturers are all into MK bags and accessories now. Half the girls who go to the hs in our town are strutting around in MK. Dooney need not worry, it's not a lifestyle brand and it hasn't cheapened itself by having separate discount store line. I don't even remember when Jordache was anything other than a cheapo Marshall's brand.

By the time I decided I had to have one...they were ALL over...and I didn't want it anymore!

And where did they mention poor quality! His polyester is all over, costs more than Susan Graver and is not nearly the quality of hers! I'm talking tops.

I did buy a purse of his and I like the one I have, but one is enough for me. Besides, the part of his line I really like costs north of $500 and my mind just doesn't let me go there.

LOL i thought that one of the reasons was going to be because this brand is now becoming popular with teens......i know that my 19 year old now saves up to buy MK and her boyfriend gives her gifts of MK.

I have never purchased anything by MK. I never saw anythig I really liked and had to have.

Then I saw him on a reality TV program. I didn't care for his personality, so then I knew that I never wanted to give him a penny of mine even if I liked something of his. He is so arrogant.

I've never really taken the time to look at MK items for the simple fact that the items I do see being worn or carried have a ginormous logo all over them and it's a complete turn-off. My good friend's 21 yo daughter has to have everything MK. You'd think she was getting some exclusive designer.

She has multiple handbags that are covered in MK, boots that have a huge gold MK logo on the side, gloves that have the same, watch..you name it. Horrible.

My friend bought an MK bag, I think because her daughter touts them so much and it's a decent leather bag but then has a huge gold MK hang tag bouncing around off the purse. The purse would be cute but she needs to ditch that huge logo tassle thing.

I worked in sales and in Summer 2014, we were selling Michael Kors signature PVC material handbags and backpacks at Dillard's for $180.00 - around $250.00 each for the big ones. We had almost no buyers, young or old, for the PVC bags in the two months I was there as a full time salesperson. The leather ones were even more expensive and we barely sold any of those, either. Very few. Meanwhile, Dooney, Brahmin, Fossil, Calvin Klein, and Coach were still hot sellers.

Too bad they had just remodeled the dept. about 6 months before I arrived and made Kors one of the showcase brands with their name on the wall, etc. The bags just sat there. I haven't been back to that store in quite a while now, so I'm not sure if they have downsized their section or not.

I just went to Dillards.com when I saw this thread and they are still heavily into selling Michael Kors branded stuff. We had loads of MK everything in our store. Lots of MK watches and jewelry, etc. I also worked the watch and jewelry counters 2 days a week and I only sold a few MK watches. They weren't hot sellers during my time there.

I don't know if this was because of the area I live in or the article is right but, I wasn't impressed with the sales in handbags or jewelry at Dillard's. Thankfully, I didn't work commission. I was hourly, so it didn't hurt me. The shoe dept was commission.

Personally, I've decided to avoid "names," and just buy store "brands" and no-names.

I'm going to agree 1000%, I'm not trying to be snobby but MK is worn by the "masses and the common". What I mean is that everyone and their MOTHER has a MK bag, shoes, sunglasses, etc. and I don't like to pay my HARD EARNED MONEY for a item "I" perceive as "luxury" to have what "outwardly" appears to be the 5.00 per hour mcdonalds worker carrying the same purse. I like some exclusivity, I like my things to stand out.

I'm done with MK.

I have seen Dooney and Bourke bags in my TJ Maxx store, so the DB bags are not exclusive to QVC or high end stores. MKors has saturated the market - using any and all strategy available. Be interesting to see where he is at in 5 to 10 years. And by the way, I am an equal opportunity buyer of better handbags: I have a Michael Kors, a Dooney, a Coach and several other well known bags. And if someone asked me of the bags I own which one would I pick over the others? my Coach bag.

I do have to say that the title of this thread strikes me as funny. I didn't click on the link to the article but the title is so juvenile and high schoolish.

Really, I'm well past the age of buying things because they are "cool." If I actually liked anything MK, I would certainly buy it and not give it another thought.
