As you can tell by my name, I love style and try to keep up with the latest trends. But one recent trend boggles my mind. Here in NYC it is freezing, with temps in the single digits some days. We have had some snow and ice as well. The women (including me) are wearing puffer coats, boots, scarves, etc. and trying to look as fashionable as possible while keeping warm! Now imagine such an outfit worn with bare feet and flip flops or ballet flats. Am I the only one who thinks that looks ridiculous??? And forget looks for a second, aren't these people freezing? They can easily get frostbitten feet! If I tried this look, I wouldn't be able to move my feet after a few minutes, yet there they are, waiting for a bus or train for at least 10 minutes, as if it's July! What gives?

There are people who love to be barefoot. (I'm not one of them.) My mother-in-law removed her shoes as soon as she got home no matter what the temperature. My sister-in-law wears shoes with no socks no matter what the temperature or the weather conditions.

I did see someone in flip flops last week during the sleet storm here. I don't get it.

Some people are not very smart.

It's their feet. If they want to freeze, so be it. Their feet their problem. As for me and my feet I will be wearing socks and shoes.

I also see some people in SHORTS here sometimes. Now, understand it doesn't get that cold here however I am talking about temps in the low to mid 40s and people are out wearing shorts.

Brrrr -- I'm wearing socks or heavy tights with boots. It's like the gals on news and talk shows wearing sleeveless dresses in freezing temperatures. I know they are in studios, but I think it looks silly and inappropriate for the season.

I live in NYC, and I don't own a pair of boots. I don't like them, so I don't own them.

No, I don't run around in flip-flops in winter, but I often wear ballet flats. If I'm walking a long way on icy sidewalks or clearing snow & ice off my car, I wear non-slip shoes and socks. But most of the time ballet flats work perfectly fine, and I don't see anything wrong with wearing them along with a warm coat & a scarf.

This has been my habit for a long time, and it has nothing to do with trying to look "fashionable". It works for me, and no frostbite ever!

Some people naturally run warm or hot, and not wearing socks - even with closed shoes or boots - is just one way of keeping themselves cool/comfortable.

Instantly judging-then-assuming is wrong, as there's always more than meets the eye.

Sorrry, I dont believe that' a trend and I don't believe anyone has seen much of it at all. I live in MA and in these arctic temps, no one is going barefoot. Except, when we were UGGS. I work near a salon and occasionally, I see girl with a fresh pedi make mad dash to her car in flip flops . I havent even seen many women in flats since the temps been in the teens and single digits lately. It's all boots, boots, boots. I do see a lot more women and girls in skirts and boots now.

On 1/16/2015 feline groovy said:
On 1/15/2015 OldFoogey said:
On 1/15/2015 feline groovy said:
Some people naturally run warm or hot, and not wearing socks - even with closed shoes or boots - is just one way of keeping themselves cool/comfortable.

Instantly judging-then-assuming is wrong, as there's always more than meets the eye.

I don`t think the OP was being judgmental. Just making an observation and wondering why someone wouldn`t they protect their feet from the bitter cold as they did the rest of their body.

Understandable, but the OP also stated that they "look ridiculous".

Have you ever actually seen someone in a puffer coat and gloves with a hood up wearing flip flops with bare feet in single digit temperatures? How does that NOT look ridiculous? My opinion is that it looks silly. But, if you believe that it looks OK or they are going out that way for whatever reason, fine. You are free to express your opinion and so am I. We can agree to disagree!!

if i am out going to get a pedicure i do wear open toed sandals like birkenstocks.....year round no matter what the temperature. i pay good money for a great pedicure and i dont want it ruined.

if i am wearing flats during the wintertime (which i often do) i wear them without socks because i am personally more comfortable that way. i wear what i wear because it looks good, is my style, and works for me. i didnt realize others would be "concerned" if i didnt want to wear socks.
