I used to organize by type, then color but switched last spring to organizing by color. Either way works, but now my closet looks like a box of Crayola crayons!

The most important tip, of course, is to not over-buy. This is the hardest one for me; in spite of all my good intentions, I have too many clothes.

I have an over-the-door telescoping rod that I use to hang my outfits for the week. After I check the weather forecast, I get everything out and organized on Sunday, then hang each outfit (everything but my watch and shoes) on that rod. It takes less than an hour, and I am all set for the week.

Yep, check out HH on HSN. They have some new videos on how to organize closets, too.

I'd go through your things again & weed out more. If you haven't worn it in a long time (or in the last appropriate season) get rid of it.

I have converted a bedroom into a closet too. I have been adding to it for a couple of years. My goal is to be able to see everything. 1.Plastic shelves from Walmart for tees, pants, sweaters and jeans. 2. Freestanding clothing rack (I bought mine from BB and Beyond) 3. Stacking shelves for shoes (I bought mine years ago, but I have seen similar ones at the Container store) 4. Stackable shoe shelves (closet maid....I bought mine at Lowes) for scarves, jewelry, bras, slips, etc. 5. Plastic cubes (shoe and accessory grid from the container store) for little sweaters, shrugs, bathing suits and pajamas. These things are great. You can put anything in these. 6. Silverware drawers for jewelry. Hang belts on hook on the wall. I would have posted pictures, but I don't think they allow that. Let me know if you need any links. Good luck!

I have accessories in one area and my handbags on shelves. I took over a spare bedroom. My shoes are on shelves DH built for me.

For me it's color first; then weight (or season in which I primarily wear the item). I hang or place the folded stacks in accordance with what they are. For example: I would not put a long sleeve tee in the same stack as a pullover sweater. Dresses are together; bottoms are grouped into individual sections for skirts, pants/trousers, jeans independent of each other. I do the same thing with hanging tops (shirts, jackets, and blazers). The best description for my closet is that it's set up like the racks and shelves are in a nice boutique.

I've been using a Rowenta steamer for a few years now, and I think I've pulled out the iron maybe 5 times since I made the switch.

This is about shoes. I always keep my shoes in their box. It keeps them from getting dusty and it says right on the box what is inside.

For my handbags, I keep them in pillowcases if they don't come with a dust bag. You can take a picture of each handbag or write the color and type, then put it on the outside of the bag. I always look for pillowcases at garage sales or thrift stores.

I also lay my jeans on a shelf, takes weight off the rack.

I hang my clothes in short sleeve, long sleeve, pants, sweaters (you can hang them on huggable hangers and no shoulder bumps) and then dress clothes in the back.

A long time ago, I had a "Beauty Control" tape with lots of different tips. One was to hang clothing by colors. I started doing this about 20 yrs. ago. I hang by types of garments also, T-shirts...button down...pants...

I also try to do a closet purge 2x a yr. I take out everything & sort as I re-hang. If I haven't worn it, it goes to donation pile. Although I admit, since retiring I don't wear as much, so I do keep more than I probably should.

#1 poster also mention huggable hangers-YES!!! that is great help. I also have small handbags in a shoe organizer, & also my gloves fit there in little tote baskets.

Huggable hangers, as was posted earlier.

Also, someone suggested to me once that you organize by color. That's good for closets you use for dressing, as you can grab outfits easily.

I organize mine by season. I move winter to one rack, summer back to another. I hang all the skirts together, the pants, and then jackets. I have a hanger for scarves.

I currently use most of the tips mentioned here...Huggable hangers, clothes hung by type and color, clear boxes for shoes etc But honestly I think I am going to start a section for OUTFITS. With a disabled husband (for some of you it may be small children, or getting out the door to work or both!) my mornings are crazy and by the time I can finally get ME dressed, I just grab the same couple of easy standbys. Saturday I really wanted to have a LOOK (lol) and took the time to put things together. I felt really good all day but it took SOOOO long to do. I need to spend a little time pairing things up in advance and hanging it all on one hanger ready to go.

For sure: Huggable Hangers!! I love them; I don't have to worry about sleeveless items or jackets sliding off of the plastic hangers and into a wrinkled pile on the floor. I haven't bought any from HSN; Target carries them and puts them on sale from time to time. I group by item type (tanks all together, pants all together, etc.) and then by color. So much easier to put an outfit together. I also have several scarf hangers where you can thread the scarf through the hole and easily see what you've got. Make sure that your scarf hanger is either flocked (like the Huggable Hangers material) or a powder coated metal so that your scarf doesn't snag on a seam in the metal. They may be a little more expensive but probably no more than the cost of a ruined, snagged scarf.

By far, my best investment in my closet is a pull-out clothing rod. I bought it through a company that does custom closets and organizing systems. It's attached to the wall and when I want to put an outfit together, the telescopic rod extends to about 12" and I can hang garments that I'll be wearing that day. It's been a huge time saver. By selecting the next day's outfit the night before, I don't have to rummage through my closet, scrambling to throw an outfit together. Plus, if it's something that needed ironing, I can touch it up with the iron and hang it without cramming clothing together, thus causing additional wrinkling. I can't recall what I paid for it but I think it was under $30. Well worth the cost in saving me stress and aggravation in the morning. My DH loves it because I'm no longer hanging clothing from door knobs-ha!!

Now if I could only figure out how to install a shoe carousel in my small walk-in closet! I am not looking forward to spending time rotating summer shoes onto the upper shelves and winter shoes onto the lower shelves. DH's solution (get rid of some shoes) isn't an option.
