I read this too.

I'm just assuming that it meant she was very grateful that her line of items was successful, that she didn't take it for granted, or thought she was selling down to people. It meant she was appreciative that people liked her things and bought them.

At least I hope that's what she meant. By all I've read about her attitudes about people and her work ethic, I guess that's what she meant.

The media keeps using that term "hawking" and it sounds so bad, but lots of vendors do it, it's just selling a product, it's not like the vendor is forcing us to buy. We buy things everyday, and there's nothing wrong about that.

CBS Sunday morning did a profile on her this morning. They had a clip wherein they talked about QVC came along when she had hit a wall. Her husband was gone. Her talk show had been canceled and she wasn't getting bookings. She said never say no and you should always walk through a door.

She said to students, just within a few weeks ago (she was everywhere, it seems!), but she said something like "No job is below you! Take a job when offered." (paraphrase)

I think it was half joke, half serious as her incredible appreciation for anyone who was a fan, or trusted her line of products enough to buy them she considered serious business... like a religion. That the customer (or fan) was going to get more than their money's worth for trusting her enough to buy her items (or see her shows).....

I took it to mean she couldn't swear or offend or give her usual quick-witted, uncensored remarks. She had to carefully edit herself and those who bought from her, either liked her products, her, or both. And it had nothing to do with her "gig" or her standup.

Presenting here had to be sort of like being in a sacred place of censorship, lol.

Considering the person who wrote this was an extremely close friend of Joan, enough to be there while she was on life support (per her article), I wonder why she would write something about Joan's "hawking" of items here, considering those comments could be misconstrued to sensitive readers and may cause hurt feelings.

I think she meant it. During the roast of Joan, when someone would make a joke about her QVC gig, she wouldn't laugh and would scowl. Read somewhere that "appreciation" was a constant quality of hers and she didn't take things for granted.

Now if you put it in that context it seems to make better sense. Meaning, don't go there with jokes because that is the ground she knows holds those who like her for her or her wares.

Have you read much of Cindy Adam's work? That's just her NY style of talk.

I read it to mean that Joan was very appreciative of her QVC customers and selling here was an important part of her life.

Have you noticed how many stories in the last week (and obits) just kind of kissed off QVC...mentioned that she sold on shopping channels...and that was it? The press & public at large didn't appreciate her QVC business as much as Joan did, IMO.

NBC and MSNBC had the most positive things to say about QVC (and mentioned she sold more than a BILLION dollars of items here!). But NBC/Universal owns E! and Bravo and she did a lot of work on their networks....she was "part of the family."

I took your comment as critical of Joan. If it wasn't, my mistake. I agree with others who've noted it was Joan's acerbic yet funny way of making a point about how she valued the Q and its customers.

I don't think Joan ever took anything for granted, and appreciated everything she had, since she built her brand from nothing. That's why she considered her work at QVC "sacred." It may have been tongue in cheek, but I have no doubt it was sincere. Too bad she doesn't seem to be getting the respect for her work at the Q from the press coverage, they obviously don't get what a huge part of her life it was.

Given Joan's clear work ethic and the importance she placed on all her endeavors it seems to me she was saying her work at QVC was as important to her as anything else she did.

Joan was a smart and savvy business woman and she never took her customers on QVC or TSC in Canada for granted. She didn't just put her name on her jewelry and clothes, she picked things that meant something to her and that would mean something to the customer as well. She wore her own clothing and jewelry line and used her own beauty products. Just how many other vendors would even bother? Most other celeb vendors think that if they appear on a shopping channel that they can just parachute in and sell stuff that they probably never even saw before.

You can tell that Joan worked very hard, how else could she last at QVC for nearly 25 years or TSC for nearly 18 years? She built a relationship with the companies including the hosts and models and the people who work behind the scenes.

I took it as she had to edit herself in a big way for the demo of the QVC customer. TV shopping will always be the 'underling of the retail litter'.

More respect is given to the unknown brand making it big (ie Joan's line) vs an established dept store brand reducing itself to TV shopping (ie Dooney).

Either way, you sign your retail soul to the devil & forever branded a "hawker'. Tough stigma to shake.
