What color shoes with colored tights?

I'm curious to know how most of you will wear the colored tights. Will you wear shoes that match the tights or black shoes? Also what style of shoes will you wear? I'm loving the Aubergine tights but am wondering if I would wear black shoes with them or try to find a matching shoe.

I'd try to match the color of the tights, but black always works, BUT I insist on suede or nubuck. Shiny leather shoes with dark tights look funny to me.

I like a charcoal or a metallic, if you don't have shoes that match the tights.

I try to match my tights to my shows. With gray shoes, I would go with gray tights. Black/black, brown/brown, navy/navy. And that's as far as I am willing to go with colors of tights.

You could also do a neutral shoe (taupe), especially if your top also is tonal w/ the aubergine. I wouldn't repeat the taupe color anywhere else.

This is a great question! I have purchased a couple of pairs of colored tights in the past, but never knew what shoes/boots to wear with them. I have worn aubergine tights with a black pencil skirt and tall black boots so that only a little of the tights were showing. I wore a top that was tonal with the aubergine but not matchy.

Can't wait to hear all the ideas about this topic.

Why not just browse through the fashion mags, either paper or online, & see what they're showing in the ads. I think it can be tricky because right off-hand I'd say don't wear dark tights with a light neutral shoe, but sometimes it can work, depending upon the shoe style. I guess I'm still kind of old-school & consider tights something to be worn with more casual, preppy styles. Think Ali McGraw in Love Story.

What a great question! I am starting to think I want to get some tights for fall and I had not given any thought to what shoes I'd wear with them. Or what the rest of my outfit would be, for that matter. lol... I have a lot to learn about tights.

Always black shoes, unless you are wearing brown tights. Then you would wear a brown/saddle/caramel color shoe.

I keep notes on these kinds of questions from what Louis has posted. Here's what I've saved so far on this topic:

A beginners question as I get started with your new tights and patterned tights:

Q: Do you usually match the tight color to the skirt above it or can you match the tight to another color elsewhere in the outfit? Any other guidelines for tights you can share which come to mind?

So if I were wearing your grey striated skirt and tee set from a season (or two) ago in GREY but over the top was wearing the coming new BLACK ponte knit long jacket ~ could I go with either the grey heathered tight, which would be tonal with the skirt OR a black tight, which would match the jacket?

Dear Nancy….there are NO RULES, and I think basically you answered your own question with the two options you came up with. Both are good, and both would work….so one day you go with the black…another with the gray. Even with color tights….you can match the skirt or the shoe…or sometimes neither. You could be in a black sweater, skirt and shoe and wear a black tight to match, patterned or solid, you could also wear a gray heather or a color like the AUBERGINE for a shot of color. I have shown on the runway a model wearing an ivory silk blouse with a long side button skirt and RUBY RED TIGHTS peeking out. Tights have to be thought of as any other fashion accessory. Again, PLEASE don’t have your thoughts confined to the traditional. It’s easy to throw on a pair of black tights, but it can be so much more fun to wear a pattern or a color!

Q what about patterns on the tights – if you have a patterned skirt can you still go with a patterned tight?

Yes, you can and I see it all the time in the magazines, but they take it to the extreme. I will be having a lace pattern and I have mixed laces together, pinstripes with pinstripes and herringbones with herringbones. Of course you can’t mix everything, and your own good judgement should be your final answer. Another trick I have done many many times in shows…is to layer……….I have had models wear a color tight with a pattern over it. For instance a gray opaque or sheer with a lace or herringbone over it. I have had models wear color tights like red with black lace over it with a black short evening dress…or for day wine tights with black or navy herringbone. It really isn’t any heavier or bulky and can be so much fun!

Yes two pair of tights…you then have custom tights.

That’s correct….suede is like velvet….it absorbs rather than reflects. Have you ever noticed how black suede looks blacker than black leather?

Dear Cathy….I honestly think you could wear the Aubergine skirt…if you have the matching tights….that will elongate….the skirt will come below your knee so why not? With the matching V-neck sweater or even the side button WK tunic sweater over it…..I think it can look great……I would wear a suede shoe which does not reflect the light as leather or calf does. This is a trick of the eye, but it does help to keep a longer line. The shiny show breaks the line and therefore shortens.

Dear Sherry….it is usually fine to wear a darker tight than the skirt or dress…..in this case the coffee bean skirt with the walnut tight…but you must wear a shoe as close to the Walnut as possible in either leather or suede….you don’t want to have three browns going on and you don’t want your shoe lighter than your tights……in general.

I always match the tights to the shoes.

But I'm only 5'4" and have short legs.

Matching makes for a longer, sleeker look. The last thing I need is to make my legs look stubby with two contrasting colors!

I had read Louis' advice regarding the suede being elongating as it it non-reflective, so last night I ordered THESE Clark's on 3 EP. The heel is higher and thinner, and therefore, dressier, than my other Black and Navy Suede Clark's that I raved about. These look gorgeous and the reviews are also glowing. Now I have to find Wine/Aubergine Suede. Also, I'm on the hunt for Luggage Tan Shoes, Handbag and Belt.

I went for these since I'm still recovering from a sprained ankle and sprained wrist I got this summer. A256036 White Mountain, water resistant suede. I confess that I love a solid footing underneath me in the N.E. ice and snow.

Okay, I take this back....all the time I was thinking leggings instead of tights! (It's been a long week!) Neutral shoes would work with part of your own skin tone next to them, which then would work with just about any color on top, (as long as the whole outfit--pants & top--is one color.)

TheOwl, I like those White Mountain boots. Because of a disability, I need to use a cane now, so I really can't wear heels. I need a sturdy boot, but like something somewhat fashionable. How do they fit?

I ordered, and am returning, a pair of "as is" Clarks ankle boots, because they must be mis-sized (way too large for my foot -- the right foot particularly). I like the boots otherwise.

Also, I purchased the Walnut Linea tights, but I don't have a Walnut skirt or pants. I wonder what I can wear with the Walnut tights. Maybe I should return those for the Auburgine, since I have a couple Auburgine sweaters I bought awhile back.

I've been wearing colored tights forever. I get them at a specialty boutique (they sell European "good for you" shoes. Very pricey.)

I'm 5'2, have short legs and can only wear flats. I've been collecting colored shoes and short boots forever. I wear a lot of skirts and dresses. I have green shoes, wine boots, beige boots,etc. I've also worn beige fishnets over beige tights. I don't have grey shoes but the grey flower patterned tights I have are very dark. I can't wait to get Louis' tights. Some of them are really exotic. I might have to shorten some skirts to show them off.

My niece lives in Brooklyn and commutes to Manhattan every day. She wears skirts, even in bad weather and is particular about her tights. I'm going to send her two pair of Louis' tights so she can layer. She has long legs and can handle it. A nice gift and it will make me feel better about her in her short skirts in the freezing weather.
