How much would you pay for a wedding dress?

I watch Say Yes to the Dress and I am asounded by the price of wedding dresses these days. When I think to myself that the girls that only want to spend up to $3000 are the losers, I come to my senses and think OMG that much money for one day of wear!!! I was married in 1975 in a park in a Gunne Sak $50.00 dress and my marriage has lasted almost 40 years now. What do you think???

It would depend on the venue and type of wedding. If I'm going to have a fancy/expensive wedding and reception then spending a couple of thousand on the dress is no big deal.

I would not spend a lot. A great dress doesn't happen just because one pays a lot.

I figure people spend what they want to. It does not matter to me what others spend.

I got married in 1990 and my dress was under $500.00. It was exactly what I wanted and just so happened to be on clearance in a boutique store in our area.

I'm not sure what I would spend on a dress now for a first marriage. I probably wouldn't go the traditional wedding gown route. If I got married a second time, I definitely wouldn't go with a traditional wedding gown.

I think mine was $650 or so. My veil was $120 or so. I can't even remember for sure. I'd probably pay $1500 if I was getting married now.

Gunne Sak: loved those dresses! In this day and age, I'd have a small-ish garden (local, close to home) wedding, wearing a very 'Gunne-Sak' type of cotton/embroidered/lace dress. Longer sleeves, very romantic. Very 'country' in theme. Also, it would be an afternoon cake/coffee/champagne/punch type of reception. With plenty of plates of donuts, cookies, cupcakes, pastries. Nice background music. That's 'just me' thinking out loud right now.........

I spent $300 in 1979. If I were gettng married for the first time and having the same type of formal wedding I had then I would probably expect to pay $1,000-$1,200 for a dress. Our reception cost about $25/per person for a sit down dinner but now I think it would be at least $125-$150 per person.

Deanie, you're right. I remember thinking back then I wanted to rent a dress but 35 years ago that wasn't really an option. I wonder why it hasn't become more popular. If it's the sentimental value, I'm pretty sure most wedding dresses wind up in a closet and are forgotten.

I was married in 1986 when I was 27, and I think I paid about $650.00 for the dress and veil.

Twenty years later I divorced him, so now I'm out the $650.00.

Is that what your name reflects, OneandDone? If it is, it is a good one. And, I do not get it CastleNV, why that concept has not taken off. Most of the time the dresses are put away in a box. And, what if you get divorced? Who wants to keep a dress around as a reminder?

I'd probably have it made to order (or make it myself) rather than buy retail. From what I've seen of the dresses available today - nothing I'd ever wear.

...but maybe I'm just cheap, because the theme of our wedding was "we're getting married," and the food consisted of cake, punch,and mints. We were young and broke. We're still married, over 25 years later!

I don't think I would spend more than a thousand. I bought my dress from Nordstrom I spent a lot on the shoes-lol. I didn't have a traditional wedding, so I didn't need a traditional dress.

Actually Deanie my name reflects a night I spent with my girlfriend at a bar.

This was during my divorce by the way...hey, ya gotta have a few drinks here and there while you're getting stabbed in the back by your soon to be ex and attorney's on both sides....that's my motto, and I stand by it.

I had never tried a Martini before, so I decided to try one.

WOW.

As much as I liked it, when the bartender asked me if I wanted another I said "No thanks, I'm Oneanddone."

As far as the wedding dress goes, after the divorce I donated it with hopes that anyone who would wear it after me would have much better luck with their new husband than I did!!

I was ready to get married, but had absolutely no interest in having a wedding. My mother insisted I get married in the church; very small informal wedding with the reception at my grandparents house. I wasn't happy to have my wedding railroaded by my mother, her friend, and my mother-in-law, so I got married in a dress I had previously worn to prom. My attitude about weddings has not changed over the last 40 years, and I still would not go out and buy a wedding dress.

The prices keep going up. When my friend's daughter got married, they found a beautiful dress on sale for $600. So a couple of years later when my daughter was getting married, I thought I could find one for $600. Nope, we went to the most popular shop in the area, so it was not the absolute cheapest, but not the most expensive, either. It seemed that most of the dresses were around $900-$1200. By the time she was ready to order, the prices had gone up and we ended up paying $1400. I found several lovely dresses on clearance, but they could not be altered without losing style and fit elements. Even though they take exact measurements, I still had to have it taken in and shortened.

I think $3000 is still more than it need be but maybe not terribly out of line. More than than would really be too much in my opinion.

I got married in 1996 and my dear mother bought my dress for me. $2,000 and $200 for alterations.
