I wear glasses but I am thinking about trying multifocal contact lens....I just can't imagine what they are like.... For those who wear them, how do you like them? Do they work as well as glasses with progressive lens? Any advice on brands? How do you possibly work at the computer with them?

I tried them for a while and found them difficult. I went back to contact lens for my nearsightedness and readers when I need them. This works better for me.

I have worn a single multifocal lens in my left eye for several years. I wear a toric lens for nearsightedness and astigmatism in my right eye. Sounds a bit complicated, but I love it!!! I do not own a set of glasses with progressive lenses. I have worn contacts for almost 40 years and can't imagine wearing glasses all of the time. I carry a pair of readers in my purse, but I rarely need them. (My husband actually uses my readers more than I do!!!) My distance vision and near vision are both pretty good. Give them a try.....As a bonus you can wear any choice of sunglasses with them that you prefer!!!

I wore bifocal contact lenses for years and really liked them (have had eye surgery so don't need). I really don't remember the brand name, but I liked being able to see up close and far away. My doctor had a return policy so I knew if I didn't like them, I could get something else, but I liked them pretty much from the first day that I wore them.

For one, they are very expensive. I couldn't wear them. I have gas perms that I don't have a problem with, but I also need reading glasses. I tried them and they were great for about a week or two then I just started having too many problems with not being able to see anything very good. I gave them back. My doctor says not a very large percentage of people that try them have good results.

I'm curious also. I am farsighted and use readers when needed but I can only use them for a short while because any amount of weight/pressure on the bridge of my nose causes me severe headaches (that the eye doctor said I'd get use to...I never have). I have also tried to wear one contact only in my left eye for reading and use my right eye for distance (however I lose middle distance) I prefer this to the eyeglasses because I don't get headaches but the contact is soooo uncomfortable. I am only able to tolerate the contact for an hour or 2 because it feels like I have something in my eye, feels like sand or an eyelash (again, the eye doctor said I'd get used to...I never did) but it's just the contact. Maybe I have the wrong type of contacts so far I've tried air optix night & day aqua and acuvue oasys hydraclear plus unfortunately neither of them feel comfortable. Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated. btw, most of the time the arms of my readers are placed through my hair on the sides above my ears (hair is up in a ponytail) so that the glasses are not actually touching my nose this is the only way to avoid the headaches.

My eye Dr. likes the mono vision better, I am trying out contacts again after about 3 years without, during which time I changed to a progressive. I haven't found much difference as far as an adjustment.

Just trying to find which strength for the nearvision which I what I am doing now, just trying out various strengths for my left eye which also is astigmatic.

You can get trial lenses before decide on which is best.

I am getting 1 day wear which is best I think, I can't be bothered to deal with cleaning them at this stage of my life as I will not be wearing them everyday.

I've been wearing them for years and love them for everything except reading. I can read with them, but I'm more comfortable reading with my glasses.

They are fantastic for driving. I got to the point where I could barely drive at night with my progressive glasses. I have no trouble with my lenses.

Just to mention, when I first started wearing progressive lens glasses it took me almost three weeks to stop feeling like a drunken sailor. I almost gave up and got rid of them. I had no transition time whatsoever with the multifocal contact lenses. I hit the ground running and never regretted it.

I have monovision. I wear one contact for reading and my no-contact eye is for distance. Obviously you can wear another prescription for distance if needed. It is a much more affordable option. It takes a little getting use to, but your brain adjusts. I found the bifocal contacts uncomfortable. Good luck.

On 7/6/2014 jackthebear said:
On 7/6/2014 Goldengate8361 said:
On 7/6/2014 howwhatwhen said:

Your problem with wearing glasses seems really dreadful. I bet you've tried everything.....but in case you haven't, I wear rimless Silhouette glasses and they are incredibly light. I have had several pairs of Silhouettes because they are by far the most comfortable glasses I've ever worn. I'm really picky about having the best possible, crisp vision ....so I'm not yet convinced that the multifocals would be worth the effort to try. I'm on the fence.

keep trying some different lenses

Personally I don't think you will get used to it, you get used to the"feeling of a contact lens" if that makes sense. But they should not be uncomfortable, I tried one before that really wrong for me and uncomfortable.

Try a different Dr.?

Yes, as soon as my insurance plan allows me to have another eye appointment (per my plan) I will be switching to another doctor...I believe I can go again in September. Thanks again for your suggestions. oh and I do understand what you meant, I think I can get used to the feeling of the lens but the sensation I have with the contact to really unbearable. A different doctor is definitely needed. thx

For over 10 years I wore mono vision contacts, one for close-up, the other for far away. It took a few weeks for my brain to learn to allow my non-dominant eye to be the boss sometimes but for the most part, I liked it.

I'm tired of wearing contacts now. I wear glasses all the time and don't like it. I'm currently saving my money to get my eyes done. Two of my friends have had the procedure and love the result.

-Kalli
