However, there are only so many IP addresses to go around – we’re running out.

Public IP Addresses Are a Limited Resource

There are less than 4.2 billion available IPv4 IP addresses. In other words, there are more connected devices on the planet than there are unique, public IP addresses for them. The Internet is running out of IPv4 addresses, even though we’re rationing them.

Rather than your Internet service provider assigning a unique public IP address to each device in your home – you would need an additional IP address every time you bought a new computer, tablet, smartphone, game console, or anything else – your ISP generally assigns you a single IP address.

Hi
LOL, The sky is not falling.

Many ISP, and wireless companies have started to deploy IPV6 address on their networks http://www.worldipv6launch.org/measurements/ .

Each device has a MAC (Media Access Control) address which is unique to each device and assigned by the maker of each device.

This is probably what QVC uses to ban posters and why a banned poster can 'come back' by using a different device for access.

In fact if you google: what is my IP? Your IP address will show up on that goiogle search. But this is an external IP address.

2nd question: if your user ID and IP address was banned on one device, it is banned on all devices using that IP address.

2A question: going to a hotel or a Starbucks which have wi-fi capability, you need to log onto their network through your devices before you can get onto the Internet. If you are banned by user ID and use a different IP address, you would still be banned.

Seeing this unbanned poster is asking this question, I am surmising the OP is asking for someone else who is/was banned.

Carry on.

Okay this makes sense now. BUT couldn't they make up a new account? You have a point. Why would this question be asked unless by someone that has been banned? Things that make you go huuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmm

@BalletBabe, To have a posting account on the Community forums you need a "customer account" on the shopping area of the website first. The 2 are linked to each other. To create a brand new forum posting account, a person would have to set up a new shopping account, add a nickname, and then sign onto the Community. If your IP address is static, and you've done nothing to change it, you'd still be identified with the same address and you'd find yourself blocked from posting. In today's world, many people use cellular connections which have changing IP addresses... or they use public WiFi connections... or even proxy servers. As a result, it's much easier to bypass IP blocks and much harder for websites to pin a person to one IP address and keep them out if the person is determined to find a way in. That makes moderation trickier.

I wasn't banned so I have no concern.

I didn't think you were banned. My reply is an answer to your question: "BUT couldn't they make up a new account?"

No I am sorry , I knew you were not saying I was banned. Didn't mean it that way......sorry

You may block one but the poster may have a large potential "supply."
