Entitlement Attitude - Vent

The Millennials don't have exclusive ownership over this way of being.

It's prevalent across the board, in all age groups.

I've seen it first hand, and quite frankly, I'm tired of it.

I'm tired of people think that they are "special" and don't have to follow the same rules as the rest of us.

I'm just done with it.

I had a customer this morning screaming and yelling at me for something I have no control over. He said sorry, but I'm not trying to take it out on you. WHAT!!!! That's exactly what he was doing. Geez, I'm human too.

Like the people who get in the front of the line and then say, "oh, I didn't know the line was "back there" ....

But, they never go "back there"; they proceed forward and ring up their stuff. And of course, their cart is filled to the brim, while the rest of us who've been standing in line have 10 items or less.

Or those who whine about not getting a COLA, even though there is no COLA guarantee and it's based on inflation.

Or those who denigrate others for receiving a "hand-out" only to be looking for the same type of "hand-out" for themselves or their loved ones.

ones who taught the Millennials to be as evil as implicated.

There are icky attitude people of all ages

roaming the Earth as of this very second.

It's not just limited to a certain generation.

In fact, my comment was not referring to "millennials" at all, who I find to be much more conscientious when it comes to busting in front of people.

Posters know the standards but post political comments, repost what the Mods deleted, tell others how to sneak their email address and then delete it, use "code" to post advance TSV item #'s or coupon codes, or other obvious violations here trying to fly under the Mods radar. Then the same people rant about "other people" who have an elevated sense of entitlement. Case of the rules only apply to everybody else.

I don't think I am entitled to anything. I do think the gov has a duty, after taking money from us for decades ,to keep their promise to everyone, past and future.

It's certainly nothing new. What IS new is the recognition of entitlement as a Thing and giving it a name because it has become so prevalent among Millennials.

No, it's not strictly a Millennial Thing and no, it's not just Millennials who do this - but they do it enough more than other generations for it to be recognized by mental health professionals and mainstream publications, based on statistics - and that's not just my opinion, google it. My point is not to bash Millennials but to say that yes, statistically there are a higher percentage of Millennials with this mindset than statistically in other generations.

My stepfather was Mr. Entitlement Speshul Snowflake from the 1950s to his death from Alzheimers at age 85. In the 1950s, 60s and 70s, it stood out. A lot. His POV was that if you acted like royalty, no one would "dare" question you, and you would be treated like royalty. Whatever you behaved like, you would become and people would believe. But his wasn't the same mindset, I don't believe, as the entitlement seen today, caused mostly by parents, schools and sports organizations drumming it into the heads of all kids from a young age that they are all super special. They grow up to believe they truly are.

Gee, I hope you are not referring to folks on Social Security when you referred to "those who whine about not getting a COLA." You may not realize how low those increases have been for years. You also may not realize how many seniors depend on Social Security for their sole source of income. And so many through no fault of their own. And despite buying the best insurance possible for retired folks, many seniors are left with large co-pays for drugs and medical procedures. I may add that it is just a fact of life - as people get older, despite their best attempts to take care of their health, stuff happens.

My DH and I are fortunate not to depend on SS for our main source of income. And I do say "fortunate," because I was brought up to always think, "There, but for the grace of God, go I."

If you don't hold that sentiment, it may be time for you to rethink it.

Nothing wrong with growing up feeling you're special. It lends to good self-esteem. Entitlement is not feeling you're special, it's feeling you're "owed" something. Like a cost of living increase because you haven't gotten one for 2 years. Or to be able to purchase health insurance for $104 a month without every having an increase, even though every working person has been paying rising premiums for 20 years.

Yes, exactly who I am referring to. Individual situations are sad, but the government doesn't owe anyone a COLA unless it's warranted based on inflation.

Clearly you have an axe to grind about the SS COLA. Whatever. We get it. LOL.

Yes, there IS something wrong with growing up feeling that you're special when it transfers into adulthood where it very, very often results in a sense of entitlement - like wanting things NOW, not feeling the need to stand in line like everyone else, and genuinely feeling that regardless of rules or policies, *their* wants supercede everyone else's and rules should be broken for them - for *their* benefit *only* (which is not the case for those wishing for higher COLA, BTW, since the COLA would not be just for them, but for everyone with SS).

News FLASH: There are people who are entitled and don't have to do the things I do and life is a bowl of cherries for them. Don't undertand it, but get used to it. That's the way it is.

There is a difference between feeling special and expecting everyone to treat you as if you are special.

The only axe to grind I have is with people who complain about others being entitled and turn around and act like THEY are entitled. No one is entitled to a COLA. There is a calculation used to determine if a COLA is warranted. If it isn't warranted, you're not entitled to it.
