We're visiting my son, dil & granddaughters. Decided a month ago to stay in a hotel nearby and not fight the rubber duckies in the tub, go along w/ the tip toeing around after 8PM & the TV on so low, it may as well be off...another generation. When my kids were babies, I blasted the tv and life in the house went on as usual including vacuuming during their naps, running the dishwasher after they'd gone to bed at night, etc. Now my kids can sleep if a train ran next to their house or they lived near an airport. Anyway, hotels are always so relaxing to me and this time I wanted to take notes to see if I could incorporate that into my own home. There are no chotckis lying around...only the bare necessities on the tables and dresser: a clock, phones, lamps, pad of paper w/ pen on desk next to phone & that's it. The bed has an inviting white fluffy computer w/ stacks of smoothly pressed white pillowcases on comfy feather pillows. The bed is simple & neatly made...no throw pillows & the room is not strewn w/ yesterday's clothes not hung up yet, unread newspapers, too much color, books & magazines, cell phone, box of keenlex & "to do lists" on my night table: no clutter.

The bathroom is the same w/ a spa like feel. White bleached towels hung up neatly on towel bars, soap, lotion next to sink w/ a small shampoo & conditioner. OK that's not practical, but even the idea of the counter cleared of mouthwash bottles, hairbrushes, skincare & trying to move all items just to get to the sink is inviting. Let's not leave out that the bed is made neatly every day, by someone else...I'm lazy about that at home & just flip back my comforter....and clean towels each day are a luxury I won't do at home. I will however do away w/ all the colorful throw pillows that get their name because you have to throw them on the floor to make room to get in the bed. I'm also going to put my skincare in a basket on the counter & mouthwash in a wine decanter w/ stopper. Definitely will clear off night tables from all the distractions & to do lists that keep me up at night trying to plan the next day.

I probably could easily live in a hotel. Shower, put on a heavy terry robe from the closet while drying my hair, dress & go downstairs to a buffet breakfast (my favorite meal) that I don't have to cook or clean up after... If I lived like this every day, that would take away the special treat of a few relaxing, pampered days in the hotel, but when I get home, I will attempt to copy some of these ideas to achieve the same feeling of relaxation.

We always stayed in a hotel when we visited our son and his family. It was just better for us -- never felt "in the way." Of course, they wanted us but this was our decision.

I had to evacuate during Matthew a couple of months ago and moved in with my daughter and her husband for a few days. I had my own "suite with bath" at the other end of the house, but I still felt in the way. Hotels were impossible to get unless you traveled to Alabama.

I love my kids, but I love my privacy also.

I never stay with anyone, family or friends more than two days and only if I know they have the extra room for us. I always insist on taking the hosts out to dinner and treating them too. I stay in hotels a lot too when visiting and I do enjoying staying in a hotel. I like my privacy and I'm sure they do too. I'm at a point in my life where I can afford to do these things, when we were young and starting out, hotels weren't an option for us.

I think it's just that we have different living patterns. Wake up, go to sleep, need the bathroom for baths. Sometimes staying with someone, you can fall over each other. I'm an early riser and need my coffee when I get up. I don't want to put anyone else out, or even talk that early. Others sleep later than I do. So, I think hotel rooms are great too.

And, where do they end up? Yep, on the floor! The bed does look nice though - if and when I actually make it up and stand there forever it seems arranging the ridiculous throw pillows for that perfect look - why do I do this? I have no idea!

Also, like the decanter idea for the mouthwash. Must say, that would beat looking at the lovely blue bottle of Listerine by the sink!

Great post, Shanus! Great minds think alike! I, too, love the simplicity of a hotel room. Have also thought many times that I could live in one. I love your thinking about incorporating said simplicity into your own home. I would have to make sure to have access to a workout facility, too. Wonder if dh would mind if I went to a hotel for a week and sent the bill home, lol?! Thanks for sharing your great ideas

I'm a fan of hotels when visiting family. The shorter the trip, the nicer the hotel I choose ;o)

I have been enjoying some of the new Residence Inns I've stayed at this year. They are like luxury apartments. I find a Whole Foods or a Wegmans and buy my "things" and enjoy coffee and tea and snacks whenever I want and make my favorite breakfast every morning (their cookware is the pits, so if I stay longer than 2 days I buy a nice frying pan).

You can't take a bath because you don't know if the tub is clean so you have to shower, the heater/AC are frequently not operating properly, and I prefer a firmer mattress, and the toilets are usually very low which is difficult when you have a bad back. I'd much rather be at home, but then I do have a freshly made bed and do not have clothes strewn around the room or junk lying on every surface. You can't beat the comforts of home.

My brother had breathing troubles (suspected carbon monoxide poisoning) and checked himself into a hospital. He had atrial fibrillation and was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Now he has numerous tests, blood work up and Doctor's appointments.

He is a long distance truck driver and he had to drop off the load he was hauling at a terminal. Unfortunately, the terminal is not in the same state as his residence. So he has been staying in a hotel for 4 months. He likes it. There is a sitting area with sofa and comfy chair, a desk and a comfy bed. Housekeeping comes in everyday to clean, change sheets and make his bed. We cleaned out alot of his personal stuff from his truck while he was in the hospital - so he has most of the paperwork, computer, clothes and stuff he needs.

He is in no hurry to leave.

We usually stay at Marriott hotels if we possibly can. Their bedding and mattresses are usually nicer and they give you better pillows. Sometimes I take an extra pillow along because I like two.

I love staying in a nice hotel. When we are in one with a great bathroom and comfy chairs and bed, nice view--I'm in heaven!

We always try to stay at a Marriott. We have points with them. I don't think we've ever had a bad room. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton are now associated.

Wonder if I could get my family to think as you do. I have a small condo and visitors tend to turn my place inside out. In the past I've paid for them to stay in a hotel. Lately however, I don't, but sometimes suggest - strongly - they book a room. On the other hand, if they stay here, I don't feel badly when they treat me to a nice dinner.

We are lucky to always stay at a Hampton (usually) or a Hilton as that is where my DH has points - and why would we pay when we can stay for free . Great hotels but , nevertheless, it is still a hotel. We are frequently upgraded at Hampton because DH was a platinum member.

When we moved to florida we had to stay in a hotel for a week and they upgraded us to a suite with a washer/dryer , a kitchenette and a jacuzzi tub. IT was great, esp considering the situation for us.
