Unusual and creative Xmas decorations

My mom saved can lids, pierced them with an ice pick and hung them on small trees, like ornamental maples and dogwoods and then used a lamp to up light them. It sounds weird but it looked very pretty.

I like to use cotton bolls from my gram's family farm on wreaths and our Xmas tree.

Anyone care to contribute?

No, it doesn't sound weird my mom did the same thing when I was younger and I made them with my daughter as well. My daughter got really creative and put a candle in the can so when you would take the ice pick to it (or whatever sharp thing you used, a hammer and nail works too) it wouldn't dent inward. I still have the ones my daughter made years ago where she did them in the shape of a star, Christmas tree, a peace sign, and Santas face. I am not artistic the way she is but for those who aren't they could just tape whatever template they would like to the outside of the can and have something to "trace" with the ice pick or hammer and nail. After all of these years I still have the ones my daughter made an put a battery operated tea light I purchased at a dollar store, four for a $1.

The first year my daughter moved out and lived on her own for Christmas, she was a little bummed she didn't have a fireplace and mantle in her tiny little apt. She took chalkboard paint and painted one wall with it. This is what she did for Christmas. I am looking for the other pictures she took for the way she dressed it up for other holidays. This was the only one I could find so far and there is a better picture she took after this where she drew a fire in the fireplace. I thought it was very cute.

I really loved it too @dex and thank you! I can never come up with ideas on my own for crafty cute stuff. I so wish I could find the later pics of this because she drew in a fire and made a window also with a winter scene outside the window, with snow on the ground and trees and Santa in his sleigh. I don't know whose daughter she is because I am not crafty and can barely draw a decent looking circle! Haha! I really can't wait to see some of the ideas on this thread. I am sure there will be some great ones!

When my Grandmother decided she no longer wanted to put up a huge tree she purchased a 3 ft. Table tree. She used all of her large colorful clip on earrings to decorate and a string of lights ! It was very festive!

I remember stringing popcorn into a garland for my friend's tree. I'm guessing many poster on this board may have done that too.

I taught kids crafts at a local Y years ago and we made picture ornaments for the kids to give their parents and grandparents. We used the plastic lids like from coffee cans, nuts, etc and glued the picture in the middle and then glued beads around the around the inside rim and punched a hole at the top to hang. We also used old Christmas card pictures.

We are of the Jewish faith but we put up a tree for our staff. Every year, somebody brings us ornaments made from safety pins and beads and they are incredibly intricate!

Every morning I look at my used k-cups and think about what I could do with them: they kind of remind me of bells. Next year, I want to spray them with metallic paint and decorate them....I've also thought they might be cute bird feeders. Here is Florida it's illegal to feed birds, but up North, it's quite common.

My idea is to stick some sort of wire through it so it could be hung on a branch. Coat the coup with on or press some suet on it, roll in seeds and hang.

I get a daily email from a site called Hometalk. Amazing how crafty and creative people are. Many ideas of people turning everyday recycled items into beautiful decor.

As for myself, I cut the dried flowers off my hydrangea tree, placed them in a large planter, it sits on my covered front porch. When I was decorating I found some large glittered burgundy colored poinsettias picks I had stashed, so I added them.
