When a thread is closed...

So, when a thread is "closed for commenting" for no apparent reason, i.e.: no fighting, not political, etc., just "closed" - does that mean that we can't page the OP of the thread just to see how things are going????

There are a few threads here that are just closed. There is absolutely no reason. I don't understand what criteria the Mods. use to close threads but I just don't get it.

So, does anyone know the answer? Do they ban posters who ask about a poster whose thread was closed? TIA

I can't answer the question, I just don't know. However, it's very odd. I've seen it several times now, the mod will just close a thread for no apparent reason. No fighting, no arguing, everything is going nicely and fine and the mod just shuts it down. Yeah, yeah. I know it's a Qvc board and they do whatever they want. It's just that more and more it seems that there really are no rules when it comes to the board now. I've also noticed that some posters can post whatever they want re other retailers and it's fine but when another poster does it, the thread gets shut down.

It usually always says why it has been closed. Which one are you referring to?

@Sophia Marie There is always a reason why threads are closed. Since the author of the thread is not listed, how are you going to page her? It's against board standards (which you need to read) to restart a subject that has been closed. After 2800 threads, you should know these things!

Hello, SophiaMarie.

This answer is going to have a bit of a back history, so this may be long.

When this forum was a bit older, the threads would just disappear. No explanation, no reason why, no nothing. The thread would just be gone, like it never existed.

Then this forum was updated to what you see today. And before this forum was updated, QVC took a poll and asked posters what changes they wanted to see. One of the main things posters asked for was an explanation as to why a thread was closed.

So QVC moderators started closing any threads that got too heated and giving an explanation as to why. Too much arguing, too much name-calling, too off-topic, ect.

Then posters started complaining that the reasons the moderators gave for closing the threads were "too vague."

They said things like, "Unkind? How in the world was that unkind?! What do you mean argumentative?! Adults post here, so what if things get heated?! Adults can take it! Too off topic? Of course the conversation is going to evolve over time! Why should that be a reason for closing a thread?!"

So now, the moderators don't always give a reason for closing a thread.....because people will complain anyway.

No, I don't think the moderators will ban anyone for asking why another poster's thread was closed, But there's a high chance that the thread asking about that will be closed. It might be seen as "restarting an already closed topic."

@If you can remember the name of the OP (original poster) who started the thread, then you can get their attention by typing the @ <------symbol and attaching the person's name to it.

There have been threads "locked" or "closed for commenting" in which you get to read the posts left up. What you didn't get to see were the deleted posts with which caused the ruckus. So, when you read a thread which is locked and the posts appear o be okay, there had been a lot of "house cleaning done.

@Kachina624, I think you are confusing Moved (a/k/a poofed) threads with threads closed for commenting.

What I have seen is with a thread that could easily go off the rails into poofable territory, and is perhaps teetering on the brink - some moderators will just poof it, even though the majority of the posts *aren't* poof-worthy - but they just don't want the hassle of keeping watch on it.

Then, other moderators - IMO the ones who take their job seriously and try hard to be fair - will look at a thread and SEE that there is little to nothing deletable by standards within the thread, but it could easily get there with a few more posts. But instead of poofing the thread, they close it for commenting and leave it readable.

I personally find this more respectful of the thread participants than just poofing the thread. It's leaving their words viewable because the entire thread had NOT crossed a line at the point at which it was closed for commenting - though you could see it was going to. Stopping the thread in its tracks *without* hand-slapping participants who had not breached standards.

Poofing or closing, either one, is a judgmental call. I personally think it's 'friendlier' to close rather than poof. JMO.

So, I just did a search on my name to find the thread and I can't find it. Maybe I just didn't go back far enough. It's really not that important - just curious.

It was about someone's grandma wanting to move from one state to another. The thread said "this thread is closed for commenting" the last time I looked, I think yesterday. I don't know the name of it but I think I would recognize it.

Anyway, my question was - is it "legal" for someone to page the OP of that thread (I remember her name) and then ask her how things are working out. I didn't see any posts "poofed" and the thread looked harmless to me.

@sophiamarie I made a logical suggestion to you so don't you get snarky. In the menu on the left at the top is "Welcome Get Started" with the standards. Everyone is supposed to read them.

For all you know, the OP may have requested the thread be closed or it got argumentative or hurtful. As I recall the move was a touchy situation so I chose not to comment. It gets to the point where there's nothing constructive left to say.

Yes, there's no objection to paging anyone but I wouldn't reopen a closed subject. The thread didn't look harmless to to mods obviously. There is always a reason, why would they close a thread without one?

@Marp There's a reason for both and I don't have them confused. Sometimes they're moved because they comments are inappropriate and they don't want them to remain. Sometimes they leave them but close posting because there's nothing else constructive to be said.
