Although you can control the temeperature, I find electric blankets to be too much warmth for any home which is heated. I was given one when going through illness which affected blood counts and I was in a perptual state of being cold. I couldn't stand it. On the positive side, I also have heard nothing but praise from a few who have, and wouldn't be without, an electric blanket.

If I may make a suggestion something like the oversized Homedics heated pad works best for me when my achy parts are chilled to the bone. Of course needing heat for achy body parts and just being cold are not the same thing. Hopefully, others will have better input for you.

I've used one since I was a teenager since I'm always cold when I go to bed. I recommend a heated mattress pad instead of a blanket. I put the pad under the mattress pad and I don't feel any wires. Most of them have an automatic shut off, I think, due to safety factors. The one I am currently using is probably 20 years old and still works fine. I turn it on about 30 minutes before bed time and my bed is toasty warm when I climb in. I have to remember to turn it down before I fall asleep or it gets too hot in there and I pop up like a piece of toast after four hours. I also have some fleece sheets that I got on sale at Kohls for cheap. Most people probably wouldn't like the heat like I do, but I can't stand being cold.

The pad (or blanket) can be washed in the washing machine, but has to be line dried.

There is nothing better than getting into an already warm cozy bed when it's so cold. I've had them all my life and they are wonderful. Flannel sheets are nice, but they don't make the bed toasty.

Unfortunately, our rescue that we got 3 years ago, destroyed mine. She chewed it up and pulled out the wires. So no more warm bed for me. Back to flannel jammies and socks. :-(

I can plug it in where ever I am sitting, or if I am laying down to rest. I can put it on my legs or around my shoulders. I use it a lot during the Winter months. If my back is cold I will wrap it around my back. I hope this helps. If you have a Costco near by the have them there. With a Electric Blanket you are limited to where you can use it being so big. Our GP doctor advised against Electric Blankets......saying when using one all the time your body gets dependent oh it.

You might want to consider a lightweight heated throw as being more versatile/movable, as well as less expensive.

If it's for an elderly person and they might be at all leery of the electric aspect, a throw might seem more...I don't know..."friendly" vs a blanket covering the bed.

I have had electric blankets in the past and for me it was either too hot or not hot enough. I think that the quality isn't there as it once was, but still for big bucks.

I was gifted a Biddeford heated throw last Xmas and I love it. Gets toasty, is very lightweight and is plush animal soft.

If you are thinking of something to keep them warm while they are watching TV, sitting on the couch, etc. an electric throw is a great idea. I have two from Costco and I can get all snuggly warm on the couch or chair (as long as there is an outlet). Doggies and kitties do like to lay on it though so you should be a little careful about that, and be sure to always unplug it when not using it.

In years gone by I always used an electric blanket. Couldn't go a winter without one on my bed. After the last one died I decided to buy a heated mattress pad instead. Now that I've come to love my heated pad so much, I will never go back to using an electric blanket.

The heated pad I have is quilted sherpa...has the perfect amount of padding...heavenly!

Thru the years I've had several electric blankets as well as a heated mattress pad, and the mattress pad was the best bedding purchase ever---it provided an enveloping type of heat in the bed for a longer period of time, and felt better than having a warm blanket spread over top of me. I never slept with the mattress pad on, but used it to warm the bed nice and toasty, just the way I like it.

Diabetics must be very careful with any kind of heating device; heating pads, mattress pads, or electric blankets, because they can suffer serious burns from the constant heat, without realizing it. My husband received a huge blistering burn on his shoulder from a heating pad. He never felt his skin burning when the pad overheated, but also never felt the blistered skin afterwards, because of his neuropathy. His gray T-shirt had a huge black scorched spot from the burn, and the recliner was also burned to the point it was literally smoking, but my husband had no clue what was going on. After that burn, we no longer have any type of heating device in the house.

We love our electric blanket. Love it, I say.

And so do the cats. As soon as I get home from work, while I'm changing into comfy clothes, I turn on both sides of the blanket on HIGH. And that's where it stays the rest of the night. The cats are nice and toasty and they live back in bed during the winter.

I usually go to bed around 8:30 or so with my Nook or iPad and read for a while. I've got a cat under my left arm and another cat under my right. The third is nestled next to me. (The other two cats are out with DH in the living room, cozied up under his electric throw with him, while he's watching tv.)

I will never be without an electric blanket for as long as I live....the cats wouldn't allow it!

I have both an electric blanket and an electric mattress pad. For someone who is always cold, I would start with the mattress pad. One item that I would suggest is dual temp controls. Even if the person is alone, being able to have different settings can make for a more comfortable bed. I would also look for a large variety in the control settings.

Depending on the person's age, you might want to help them set the blanket/mattress pad up. Sometimes it can be difficult to connect the blanket/pad with the controls, especially is they have arthritis or any type of hand coordination difficulty.
