Road Rage Shooting in NOLA area

Ronald Gasser, the man authorities say shot and killed former NFL player Joe McKnight, was released from custody overnight without being charged, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office authorities said Friday morning (Dec. 2).

Gasser, 54, has not been formally charged, said JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato. Investigators are consulting with the district attorney's office on the decision whether to formally charge Gasser, Fortunato said.

As the investigation into McKnight's death continues, Fortunato asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact department homicide detectives at 504-364-5393.

McKnight, 28, was shot about 3 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 1) at the intersection of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Terrytown. A witness, who declined to give her name, said she saw a man at the intersection yelling at McKnight, who was trying to apologize. The man shot McKnight more than once, the witness said. She said he shot McKnight, stood over him and said, "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then the man fired again, she said.

Authorities named the shooter as Ronald Gasser, 54, and said he stayed at the scene and turned his gun in to officers. Gasser was in custody and was being questioned, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said. The sheriff said McKnight did not have a gun, and deputies did not find a gun outside McKnight's vehicle.

I think he should be arrested.

The article states McNight didn't have a gun....Surely more infomation will come out. I don't know, surely Gasser will be charged. I think if he isn't, ppl should throw a fit!

And thus you have the answer as to why neither I nor any members of my family spend time in New Orleans. It was once, years ago, a place to shop or to enjoy the sights, visit the zoo or aquarium, the French Market or the Sanger Theater . . . . . but now it's a place for target practice with you as the target. I rode through the city once about a month after Katrina, just to see the extent of the damage. Haven't been back since and will not again. Nothing there that I can't find somewhere safer. It's a shame to live 45 minutes away from such a fascinating city, but it's too dangerous for my taste and I can't in good faith encourage anyone to visit there.

@cherry I've seen that,too-even in the link posted by the OP. Glasser shot from inside his car. This is the problem with pot-stirring witnesses and social media.

However, Glasser should not have been released. I cannot imagine what could possible delay charging him with murder.

They have a stand your ground law in NOLA, and that is why he hasn't been charged yet,according to what I read

@cherry Indeed they do but he was in his car and could have driven off. Even if McKnight was approaching menancingly the shooting is not justified.

Stand your ground doesn't automatically exonerate a person, either. Since they are still investigating we will have to see what they come up with.

It still seems they let him out too soon-but unless they could prove something definitive to charge him then it is what it is in Louisiana.

So much anger, displaced ignorant fear.
