@gidgetgh wrote:

You know what's "fun" also? I am extremely nearsighted with a very strong prescription. So when I try on new frames I have to get VERY close to the mirror to see what they look like on me. If I take a step back I just can't see myself. So I don't get a good feel for how they look on me because I'm standing so close to the mirror.

And, picking up on what @Pearlee said, you don't get tons of time to look during your appointment AND, at my doctor, they put the dilating drops in my eyes just before sending me over to the glasses section so there's that extra added fun. That's why I did some preliminary looking today.

@gidgetgh Please discuss with the professionals about the nosepiece ones sitting not as close to your eyes since, like me, you are very nearsighted. Honestly I'm not seeing as well with them, and the whole point of eyeglasses is to see. My miraculous doc can get me to see 20/20 thankfully, so that's what I want to see, not 20/30 or 20/25 because of the type of frames.

I don't know why you feel under pressure. First, I'd never choose eyeglass frames the same day as my appointment, because I do have drops in my eyes. Second, it can take me weeks to find just the frames I want. Frames are a really important part of your face & appearance. Take as much time as you need, and go back to - or to as many places - as necessary to find frames. The place I went to for 30 years because they trusted me let me take home several frames so I could show them to my friends for other opinions. I have to go to a newer place now due to my insuranc plan and they aren't quite as trusting to do that, but they've been extremely patient with me. It took me weeks to pick out my first and second pairs. I found the third pair right away (the one I wish I hadn't had to buy if that 2nd nosepad pair had worked out!). If you have a "thick" prescription - so that you get your lenses thinned out as I do, yours still may be heavier than most when they are made - as mine are due to my prescription, which is why the nosepads are digging in. Ask lots of questions and please do take your time! Don't pick eyeglass fames out while you have drops in your eyes! Go back, and back and back, until you find what you want. As my opticians say: you should love them. That's why they are patient with their patients!

Forgive the length of this post. Feel free to skip it if you don't like long posts.

I wore contacts from age 16 till about 53, when I had to stop wearing them because my eyes were too dry.

First, a note. I'm a really nice patient, everyone at my doctor's office loves me and we get along great, but I am extremely difficult to fit in glasses. They're either too tight or too loose or press too hard into the sides of my face, etc. Once I'm comfortable in them, I'm great and done, but sometimes it takes me several visits to get them adjusted. My husband is a put them on the first time and go person. I am not. I don't like that I'm not, but there you go.

All of my eyeglasses till now have all had the little plastic nose pieces. The little clear oval things. That's what I'm used to.

My eye doctor appt. is on Monday and I stopped in today to donate some old glasses and I did a little preliminary looking at frames. I found a pair I really like. But these frames are just all molded plastic. There's no separate nose pieces. I love the frames, love them, but am concerned that I'm not going to like not having the nose pieces.

What's your preference? Have you ever switched from one to another and regretted it? Because there are no separate nose pieces, your only way of adjusting them is on the stems obviously and that concerns me a little. I don't want them too tight that they push against the sides of my face but obviously I don't want them to fall off.

Any thoughts or experiences?

I detest the clear nose pieces. I don't like them on sunglasses or my regular glasses. I like the molded frames. Those plastic nose pieces always leave a red mark. Also, and I don't know if this happens to anyone else, I always get a breakout under them. That plastic must bother my skin. I do not have a broad bridge on my nose either. I actually have a rather small nose.

You just have to make sure you get frames that are the correct size for you face.

Did you wear off the shelf sunglasses when you wore contacts? Sunglasses are mostly the molded plastic, so if you wore those without trouble, I'd say you should be fine. If they were a problem, you may want to reconsider.

And definitely ask you doctor about the return policy before you place any order.

I've worn both and they each have pros and cons.

The pro on the all one piece is that you don't have to replace the nose pieces when they break. The con is that, I've only ever seen the molded all one piece on plastic frames which limits your style options.

On the other hand, the molded all one piece do not get your hair stuck in them when you put your glasses on your head. And I need to take my glasses off to see things very close in detail. So I have to set them down, because I can't wear them on my head.

I prefer the oval eye pieces as long as they are adjusted and dont pinch.

I went the way of Lasik 15 years ago.

I was legally blind from 10 years old, when I was diagnosed (couldn't see the blackboard at school and began to fail).

I had astigmatism. I wore very heavy, thick glasses. I managed and wore contacts when I could.

My surgeon was head surgeon at Manhattan Eye, Nose and Throat. He was able to fix the astigmatism and take my eyesight to 20/15. He began to call me Eagle Eye.

The surgery has been worth every red cent and it was a joy and blessing to donate all my old eyeglasses (some costing hundreds of dollars) to the Lion's Club.

I still don't need glasses for reading.

OK here's my two cents "on the nose."

I've worn both........

The all-one-piece nose bridge is, as you mentioned, not adjustable. When you sweat the glasses tend to slide down your nose because there's no way to tighten the bridge piece.

The adjustable "pad" bridge can be tightened to accommodate the narrow bridge of a small/slim nose.

I've seen the larger frames presented both ways; my new huge size presc. sunglasses are plastic all-one-piece --- and they're perfect because no light penetrates between the rim next to the nose to "slip under" the lens portion.

My clear lenses are pads; and I like them because when I dip my head to read they stay in place because the pads are tight to my nose.

There's no one perfect for everyone--I think you'll just have to bite the bullett and try on a gazillion pair until you find your perfect choice. But, if you do go with the plastic style you love, I know that moleskin pads are made for the plastic bridge and that might make that syle more comfortable for you--as well as the moleskin being easily replaceable and it takes up a squidge of space on each side of the nose bridge thus making the frame fit tighter.

Good luck!

Let us know what you decide............

I'm very picky and hard to fit as far as frame shape - only certain shapes look good on me; unfortunately, those shapes are rarely if ever heavily stocked anywhere.

I have always worn glasses with the plastic nose pieces because I have a bump on one side of the bridge of my nose. I need glasses that can be adjusted individually at the bridge; without that, my glasses would always sit crooked on my face.

Now that I have had cataract surgery and my lenses are thinner, I have thought about a pair without the nose pieces, but honestly I'd be afraid to spend the money and find out they didn't work, as my glasses are expensive.

Very strong prescription and progressives and ground as thin as possible and non glare. Usually, after insurance, my portion is usually $800 or so. That's partly why it's a process for me to decide what I want. Don't want to make an expensive "not going to wear them" mistake. My husband hates when it's time for me to pick new glasses. It's just always more tedious than it should be.

The frames I've picked out are medium sized and plastic, but not heavy at all. I can't get heavier frames because the lenses will make the glasses too heavy.

I might also decide to use a frame I already have, the ones prior to the ones I'm wearing now. It took 12, count em 12, trips to get them adjusted so that they were comfortable. I might just go with those. Just depends on how I'm feeling about all of it on Monday.

I had a pair of the plastic and I hated them. They could never get the ear pieces adjusted correctly and they just never fit right.

I just spent over $800 on a new pair of glasses. I am very sensitive to the weight of the glasses and always buy Silhouettes (they don't have rims and have the nose pieces). I also wear progressive lenses with non-glare.

I prefer the look of the plastic frames but just can't wear them. I did debate about trying them this time, but just couldn't spend the money and have them not work.

Just trying them on for a few minutes, sans your own lenses, doesn't let you know if they'd be comfortable in the long run, and at $600-800 per pair, it's not a snap decision to start over.
