Police Officer Killed - Washington State

A Tacoma, Washington officer has died after being shot

several times while responding to a Domestic-Violence call Wednesday night .

The man suspected of shooting and killing a veteran

Tacoma police officer has been shot and killed by

authorities early Thursday after hours-long standoff.

Key developments:

Standoff ended around 3:30 a.m. Thursday when suspect was shot and killed by authorities.
Suspect was using two children inside the home as a shield
Officer was able to get safe shot at suspect, killing him
Multiple weapons were found inside the home
Children, ages 8 and 11 are OK
The officer was shot after domestic violence call at a house around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
After he was shot at the scene, the officer was sent to Tacoma General for surgery early Wednesday evening.
A spokeswoman confirmed his death around 9 p.m.
Officer was a 45-year-old man and was an officer for 17 years, police said.

I feel sad for the family,friends and coworkers of the police officer. I feel the suspect got beyond fair treatment.i live close to where this took place.It will be a horribly sad Christmas for all sides of the matter.

Domestic Violence calls are some of the most dangerous ones an officer can respond to; emotions are high; the abuser is on a power trip.....it's a situation that you don't know what will happen from one second to the next.

Prayers and support to the family of the officer killed. At least the abuser won't be around to hurt anyone anymore and that's a very good thing.

I agree. A friend who was a police man hated going to those calls. Sometimes the beat up woman would jump on their backs as they handcuffed their abusing husband.

I live very close to the area. The scumbag who was killed was using 2 children, ages 8 & 11 as human shields. Negotiations weren't working, so the BRAVE officers entered the house, & were able to retrieve 1 child. Scumbag was using the other child as a shield. An officer was able to shoot & kill the man, & the child was unharmed. Those poor children!

The officer who answered the domestic call & who was killed was only 45 years old. God Bless him for his service, & God Bless his family.

People are really rallying in this area to show their support. They were lining the streets late last night as the fallen officers motorcade passed by. Newscasters are crying, & people are deeply touched by this tragedy.

I concur with all the thoughts and prayers for this police officer and his family. May healing begin immediately for them.

I would like to acknowledge the children in this situation, the ones used as human shields by their abusive father (assumption). While they may be physically well, and I do hope they are, the children may not be emotionally well. This undoubtedly was not the first violent altercation they witnessed between two people they in all probability love. The adults that are supposed to protect them from the evil that exists, behaving in this manner can be life changing. This observed behavior can fundamentally shake these little beings. Witnessing such activity can and does cause post traumatic stress among a slew of other syndromes and disturbances. I keep wondering when we will finally see as a thoughtful culture what witnessing domestic violence does to these growing and delicate minds.

I haven't posted for at least a couple of years and while I no longer contribute this was a story that I needed to respond. I continue to read these forums because I enjoy learning. This particular story called to me because of the children. There is much emotional pain in this segment of our culture and I don't see any illumination . Witnessing this violence is as destructive as being the target of the violence. These children in this situation will most likely need continued emotional care as many children who witness domestic violence will need. I pray for them.

The children were in that volatile situation for several hours. A little after 5pm, I heard siren after siren- nonstop. That went on for at least an hour & a half, then non-stop helicopters & small planes in the sky. It finally ended at 3:30 am. So the kids witnessed an officer murder (he was shot muliple times with a rifle), & the shooting of the scumbag.

And I'm sure the officer probably has children, too. They haven't released his name yet, but I've seen members of both families on TV. My heart goes out to all of them.

Stronger penalities which serve as deterents should be mandated immediately. Death row with no chance of parole.

Currently, one gets 30 years in jail with 3 hots and a cot, free education, yes, even eligible for organ transplants ahead of law-biding citizens.

We are about an hour away from Tacoma. I was glued to the TV set, and watching the procession from the hospital to the medical examiner's. OMG it was heart wrenching. So many police vehicles, car after car after car. People lining the streets out in the cold (some in their pajamas) to show support and respect was touching. One little boy drew a heart with a face and tears. Such a sad, sad thing to happen.
