Adult Beverages

I didn't know where to post this, so came here for more exposure. I am attending a gathering of friends and would like to order an adult beverage that is not tart like a Margarita, but not too sweet. Any suggestions? I don't drink but on special occasions and don't know what's current or a good, basic drink.

Posted after the wonderful suggestions: Forgot to mention that I cannot drink wine. It simply will not go down. I have a gag reflex. Tom Collins & Cranberry Martini sound good. I could have water w/lemon, but, by golly!, I would like the annual mixed drink.

Wine. I'm not a wine drinker, but in this situation I'd order a white wine. If I couldn't tell by the menu, I'd ask the waiter for a recommendation.

Vodka and cranberry juice is usually a safe bet, or maybe a vodka tonic if you don't like cranberry juice.🍸🍸

A white wine like Riesling is a good option. It's somewhat sweet but not very (IMO, of course). If you're not use to alcohol, you don't want to get something will drop you under the table, lol.

I don't drink either, but I order a white wine or white wine spritzer and nurse it all night. Whether I finish it or not is no one else's business.

If I'm going out with friends, I order a Cosmopolitan or a cranberry martini. Most bartenders know how to make a good Cosmopolitan but depending on the bar/restaurant, sometimes they look at me funny if I order a cranberry martini.

But remember: NO NEED TO ORDER AN ADULT BEVERAGE! No need at all! If you don't want one, just have a soda or sparkling water.

Ohhhhh, for the 'good' ole days when I drank adult beverages.

My personal picks" Grayhound= vodka and grapefruit ( made me feel like I was getting my Vit. C, lol)

Keep it simple: Stoli on the rocks w/3 olives. Yummy!

If the restaurant/venue you'll be going to has a menu of specialty drinks/"martinis", there are many "martinis" of various flavors that should appeal, and you could nurse it, i.e. just sip at it for hours, if you choose.

I had a peach bellini "martini" at lunch yesterday - vodka, peach nectar, peach schnapps and a splash of champagne. It was delightful.

I use "quotes" around the word martini because IMO what are commonly called martinis in today's restaurants and bars bear little to no resemblance to a traditional martini, they've just appropriated the word.

This is one of my favorite restaurants, @Irshgrl31201, in part because their drinks menu is extensive and creative, AND there is liquor in the drink, i.e. you aren't paying martini prices for a drink you'd swear had no alcohol in it. At this restaurant they all pack a punch. One is perfect, with a meal. I had a lobster roll with my "martini" and it really was delightful 😜

Wow @Moonchilde everything you had sounds delicious! I love lobster rolls! Drink menus sure have changed to what they were 20 yrs ago. I don't remember all these beautiful, tasty hand crafted drinks back then. However, I was really broke so maybe I wasn't going to those types of restaurants/bars because I couldn't afford it.

you could do something really simple like a baileys irish cream on the rocks.

there is another drink called a cinnamon toast crunch. rumchata and fireball over ice. it tastes like the cereal.

grey goose sour apple martinis are my go to drink along with a gin and tonic with extra limes.

You say Tom Collins is an option, but do you like gin? If not, that may be an issue. If you don't know if you don't like gin, a Tom Collins is a nice way to ease into gin. (She recalls the year of student teaching in college...)

If you encounter an "older" bartender, it's fun to order a Manhattan. An old school bartender will get a wistful look that's hard to describe.

"I can't remember the last time someone ordered a Manhattan," he'll say.

Basically a blended whiskey with sweet vermouth. You can order one "dry" and it will be made with dry vermouth.

That's old school. A younger bartender might add a dash or two of bitters and possibly orange peel and/or a cherry.

It's a nice retro drink. You'll feel like Lauren Bacall.

Moscow Mules are very popular right now. They are made with vodka, ginger beer and lime juice. They are served in a copper mug.
