Anyone else spending Thanksgiving alone?

My mom is in NY and I'm just not into going to a friend's house for dinner so I've chosen to stay home and relax.

@nycgrl I am doing the same thing. This is first Thanksgiving since my hubby passed. I am just not into it. I am getting family in for Christmas, so I am going to enjoy not cooking in many years. I really don't like Turkey anyway.

Although I have family to spend the day with, as I get older I would like to spend the day alone. I suffer from chronic pain, and a day of socializing knocks the heck out of me. I remember my grandmother wanting to spend the day by herself and could never understand that...now I know how she felt. Enjoy your quiet time...

@BalletBabe - sorry for your loss. My entire family has passed except for my mom, but she is in NY. She is coming in December and we will have Christmas. When I was married I did the whole big dinner thing for my family and his. Sometimes it feels so empty, but I am thankful for everything I do have. I lost a co-worker the other day - completely unexpected and shocking (seriously reeling). It makes you really stop and think how about how you can't take anything for granted - just enjoy every day because you just never know if you'll have another.

I get it that as you age and have health problems all that socializing can be tiring.I am not worried about being alone for any occasion as long as I have my computer and a tv I can keep amused.

@nana59 I understand. When my hubby passed I was so sick of people in and out of here. I mean you need it for awhile, but after a month of it, I just needed everyone to leave me alone. Then I had a neighbor stalking me for about 7 weeks. I really don't mind being alone. I was my hubby's only caregiver. It was a lot of work, and I have no regrets at all, but I think now I just need some alone time.

My son is in a different state. He will spend it alone too. He says he gets invites from his neighbors, but he doesn't want to be in a room full of people, that know each other, and he is a stranger. He isn't sad about it

I've spent most Thanksgivings and 60% of my Xmases alone for the past 25 years, and while I wasn't always alone before that, they were never really warm happy times.

I now live with family, and it's the first time in 20 years that I will never have to deal with working or being hundreds of miles away again. That's my Thanksgiving grateful this year.

I usually had to work on the Friday, so there were good aspects to being alone on Turkey Day - lying around in PJs doing and eating what I wanted. Xmas was the Bad Time to not be able to get away.

I was invited to my friends home but I don't think I feel up to socializing.

I am going to watch the parade on tv.

Watch the Purina Dog show on tv.

Watch some Christmas movies on tv.

This is me. This year I am with family, but usually not. I live 1000 miles from family and it's not feasible to visit for everything. I usually pick my mother's birthday and mine, since they are nicely spread out. I have no issue staying home alone, I prefer it than hanging out with people I don't know. I appreciate the time off from work.

Have a great day, no matter what you do. And yes, you do need to enjoy things because you never know what tomorrow brings. This time last year, I had just finished chemo. I am more appreciative of things this year and don't sweat the small stuff.

My daughter that lives near me and her entire family has been very sick. She just called and said her mother in law is cooking dinner but she's too sick to go.

I have an immune problem so I can't go around them. I don't eat turkey anyway.

She'll do facetime tomorrow (as will my daughter and her family in Florida and the daughter in Colorado (she has company) they'll do facetime and that works for me.

Me. I have no family in my town. Family is about 200 miles away.

all my invites were " if you're not doing anything you're welcome here".

i don't want to be an afterthought. I don't like going to big to-do's where I don't know anyone. I'm hoping I don't feel sad tomorrow, but I think I'm ok. Netflix, football and my dog!

Not alone but small and quiet. Husband and grown children. We were invited to brother's home with other family but quite honestly they get on my last nerves and are exhausting! (I'm sure they never have such thoughts about me!) #thankfulforfam

@GusMo I'm just the opposite. I've always loved going to parties where I don't know many people. My late husband was just the opposite. He'd find someone he knew and hang with them all night. I'd go off on my own and introduce myself to everyone and then bring them over to my husband to meet them.

I've met some amazing people that way. Most people are nice and kind. Everyone has a 'story' and likes talking about themselves. If I miss anything about getting old(er) it's that I can't go out as often as I used to. I love being around people. I think they are fascinating and I love hearing their stories. For some reason people tell me things that I don't think they'd normally talk about. I've always had the feeling that people have a need to connect with others. I don't spread tales or tell people's business I just enjoy listening to them.

I don't think you should feel like an afterthought. You should think about their invitation that if they didn't want you there, they wouldn't invite you in the first place. Often people feel 'weird' about saying, "you are welcome if you don't have anything else to do". If you listen to that they are actually saying, "We realize we'd NOT be your first offer or maybe even your second choice but we'd love to be your second or third if you'd like to spend time with us. I'm just saying you should look at it that way. There's nothing saying they HAD to invite you. You are doing what some people do. You aren't giving yourself enough credit. I'm sure you are probably good company and they'd like to spend time with you, that is why they invited you.

It's my choice to be alone as I was invited by a friend but I am waiting to see a surgeon and I have been in pain for a long time so I would rather be at home in case I want to rest in the bed. I bought a Rotisserie chicken and I cooked veggies and made fresh cranberry sauce and fresh sweet potatoes. So, I can watch the Macy's parade and do whatever I want. Oh, I won't be completely alone -- my little cat will be with me. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Yes, me and my sweet dog. I'm a lone-survivor so no family here. Been this way for many years. I've gotten used to spending the holidays alone. But at times I get sad that I don't have any family to share the holiday spirit with. I can't express how much it means to me to see all the kind hearted people on this forum. I thank you all for that. It brings a sense of warmth to my empty home....well almost, my dog does keep me super cozy beyond words.

To be honest, I spent countless holidays surrounded by a roomfull of people and never felt more alone. I am not sad to be by myself during the holiday season as for me this is much better than where I used to be.
