My shark came today with a warning

It says in can cause cancer of birth defects according to proposition 65 in Calif. It gave me a shock. We don't have that in Michigan. I am now wondering if it's safe to use it?

Yes, it's safe to use.

We see those warning all the time, and everywhere in California, and we never freak out over them.

I checked it... might have something to do with the power cord. You could also call the company and ask what the problem seems to be.

If everything Prop 65 requires to be marked cancer-causing actually caused damage, I'd expect California to be one of our least populated states by now.

Except perhaps for something I would be eating while I was pregnant or trying to become pregnant, I think that proposition is ridiculous.

It's probably the plastics used. Just wash your hands thoroughly before you touch or eat food. Actually, just about everything man-made we touch now-a-days has some sort of chemical/coating/ or whatever. Washing our hands before touching/eating food is always a good idea. Just yesterday the plastic bread wrapper on a loaf of bread smelled like a strong chemical, inside and out. It's airing out on my porch, and I'll return in a couple of days when a new batch is on the shelf. I'm guessing it's the plastic they used in the packaging. After all, just about everything is 'recycled' and treated now-a-days. It's never happened before with that particular brand. Well, maybe they sanitized the supermarket shelf, and the odor carried through? We have to be our own detectives, that's for sure, lol.

Let's always remember that we must, must, must teach our kids and grandchildren to always wash their hands before touching/eating foods. Their toys might have some sort of coating or made of certain plastics w/lead, etc. Make it a habit. .... Also, I always air out my new items for a week or two (when they have a strong chemical odor), and then wash them before wearing. Actually, I wash even though they might not have an odor. Especially underwear.

This is funny, because we were just discussing this last night! ( FYI, I live in Los Angeles.)

Get this ...... Yesterday I was grocery shopping and found a Prop 65 Warning sign with food in the potato chip aisle!!! Seems odd that there would be a cancer warning for FOOD, doesn't it? Well, I went and found the Store Manager, dragged him to the sign, and asked him how the heck there were cancer warnings on FOOD PRODUCTS. HOW is this even possible? He laughed, and said it was the bag the chips come in .... or the ink on the bag. Not the food.

California is often one of the most progressive states when it comes to passing laws. You'll often hear about lawmakers in other states reviewing CA's laws when researching proposals for new laws.

If anyone is interested, here is The Prop 65 List .... it is rather lengthy ..... 42 pages ..... seriously.

(Hey, I'm glad we have such zealous watchdogs here, so I don't have to continually be on high alert for chemicals. Yay California!)

People who live in CA pay no attention to those warnings unless they're pregnant or trying to be. I'm not rven sure the moms-to-be pay any attention.

I'm glad that someone is 'getting it'. I know, lots of people don't have a keen sense of smell (as I and others do). But, seriously, some of these odors are very strong, and I'm only guessing that some are permeating into the product (whether food or otherwise). Just do the 'smell test'. I believe I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, one of those doctor shows had a segment re: 'The nose knows'. If we can smell it, it (the toxin, chemical, etc.) is there.

I just thought of something: We should probably dump our chips into a glass container with tight seal. Seriously, we are handling the packaging, and then touching/eating our chips. Thanks for mentioning the warning regarding the packaging of potato and other chips.

I figure I have a bigger chance of being hit by a meteor than I do of dying of cancer caused by my Shark vacuum. But don't worry...be assured, I'll sue, if I do!

(ETA: I live in a different state and my Sharke didn't come with this warning. So does it only cause cancer, if you live in California? Should I sue my state???)

Many things with power cords come with that warning in CA. I would not be concerned, but if you are, then you should rid your home of everything that has a power cord.

I bought a Shark too a few weeks ago....the older Rocket model...I LOVE it.....lightweight an does the job....AND no side effects either....

I've always made it a practice to wash my hands before I eat.......and you never know what to believe these days regarding health warnings.....I just heard on our local news that doctor's are AGAINST washing with anti-bacterial soap and using disinfectants....they said if you use these products you can't build up the good bacteria in your "gut" which is important to good health....It seems as though we can't win for losing....LOL!
