or the chapters in the Bible? Had to do the Bible one in a Sunday school class once. My dad was helping to teach it, so I pretty much needed to do that. Can't remember enough of them anymore.

I am just wondering. Can't think of any other lists right now I had to learn.

But,..what list or titles did you want to learn? Top 10 in Bandstand? Nope, not even that.

Oh, time tables!!

I did the best in school when there was a lot to memorize. I found that easy to do. I hated when you had to apply a formula to a practical situation - hated that in math. I did best in nursing school memorizing drugs and side effects or anatomy or a disease's characteristics. I did terrible in chemistry - I could easily repeat all the formulas but could not figure out where to use what in a practical question.

You bet I had to memorize many things. I still know many of them, poems (i.e. Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Frost, The Gettysburg Address, all of the states and capitals, and on and on.) I periodically say them just so I know my brain is somewhat alert!

Four score and seven years ago.......

Children today aren't even taught how to write their name cursive. That to me is the worst change (among many). My daughter has had to teach my grandson. Remember trying to teach your own kid something? What a nightmare! But he now can do it...he's 9.

Poems seemed to be done quite a bit for Eng. class and then the Presidents. My most memorable event for a memory display was my Jr. year in World History. We had a substitute that day (50 minute class) while we spent the entire time taking a scheduled test he was memorizing all our first and last names which he proceed to say in order of our seats before the class ended without looking away from our faces or hesitating even once. Then he stated all the President's names in order but backwards. I was very impressed. This was 1979 so not as many then as now.

Well, being Catholic and attending Catholic schools for 12 years, I memorized my share of prayers, plus pretty sure I used to be able to recite the books in the Old Testment.

In highschool, I had to memorize the "quality of mercy" speech from Shakespeare. McBeth, I think?

I can't think of a high school or college course in which I didn't have to memorize. In math it was formulas, in foreign language it was vocabulary and verb declensions, in social studies and history it was dates and principles. In English it was poetry and well known passages in fiction. In science it seemed endless. In college biology, for example, I had to memorize the classification of plant and animal species. It was torture but I got through it and did well. To this day I don't know how I did it.

Oh absolutely, and with a Sunday School teacher grandma, it started with bible verses weekly, and parts in the Christmas play.

When I started to school, my first grade teacher picked me for the biggest part in the Christmas program; I had to recite from the book of Luke: chapter 2, verses 1-14. I memorized my part quickly, and knew it very well. I said it for all my family, my teacher, even said it in Sunday School. But the night of the program, when I looked out to an audience full of strange faces, I choked up and started to cry after I said "And it came to pass". My teacher had to read my part, and then the play went on as planned. To this day, my teacher feels responsible because it was a big part for a 5 year old, and because I learned it so easily, she never had me rehearse it in front of a group.

I seem to have strong memory skills, particularly with numbers. I remember every locker number from junior high thru high school, and the combination to my senior locker. I can easily recite my Sears credit card number that hasn't existed for probably 30 years. I know my drivers license number as well as my husbands, and my daughters, along with all license plate numbers and social security numbers. I know my account numbers at the bank as well as I know my name.

Memorizing comes easy for me, but I actually remember numbers longer than I do words. About 15 years ago I took a road trip with friends and the highway alert sign gave the make, model and license plate of a stolen car. For the entire trip, we looked for this car; I knew the plate number, and between my 3 friends they remembered the car we were looking for. I still remember that plate number.

Besides the usual alphabet, nursery rhymes, math tables, books of the bible, Pledge of Allegiance, lyrics to songs, parts in a play, Brownie & Girl Scout pledges, etc. there was one that drove me nuts and caused me to rebel when I was in high school. One English Lit teacher required every class, every year, to memorize and recite the Prologue to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in Old/Middle English. What possible purpose does this serve? When I pushed the point I was told by the teacher & my parents (who had also been required to learn this when they went to school) that is might prove useful at a cocktail party when I was older. HA! It has never come up in my life until this moment. What a complete waste of time and energy that exercise was.

@Havarti, were you in my English class? LOL! My English teacher was a lunatic and our pronunciation had to be acceptable too. I don't even remember her name, but I sure as heck remember that Prologue, lol. Funny thing is.... it did come up at a party when I was an adult and I have to say, my friends were entertained!
