What is a nice baby gift?

One of our waitress friends is expecting in Jan. I need to get a baby gift in Dec and would like suggestions. e will spend about $50 . In the past I've given sleepers and little things like baby nail clippers, bath sets, and toys. Do you have any thoughts about something a bit more original or should I stick to practical

I thought about a gold filled baby bangle. It's a little girl, and the fathers side is from India, and I know jewelry is important in that culture

I would leave gifts of baby jewelry to the family.

Milestone baby cards are a wonderful gift that will not be returned!! There are cards for the child to hold in all the important photos! Nordstrom sells them and many on line places.

I give practical gifts. Do you know the mother well enough to know what she already has? How about a case of diapers and some wipes.

OK, this is going to sound 'snooty' but if the father is from India often people I know who have relatives from India wear 24K (yes, 24K) jewelry. If I were you I'd get something practical. If she's a waitress, she isn't one because she loves being one, she would appreciate a gift certificate and maybe a cute little onesy. Something like that. Babies go through so many clothes.

I know it's not practical but diapers are always welcome. Remember how many they use? Why not buy a basket, take out the small package of diapers and wrap them with bows. Take the onsey and put it in bows. I'm not very imaginative but here are some ideas:

NO but I do know it is the first female grand child. The grand parents are here and the rest of the family is in India. I'm sure it will be well provided for

I always buy a baby a variety of books. Never too soon to start a library. Never too soon to start reading to a baby.

I'm on the practial side, too. Disposal diapers, blankies and onesies. I also give cloth diapers because they can be used for so much. Gift cards are great for stuff they can use once the precious little girl gets here. Maybe a small gift for mom like travel size body or foot lotions and such.

I started my DDs books the day I found out I was pregnant. I read them aloud to her long before she got here and everyday after, until she could read them to me. She is still addicted to books at 29 years of age! Yes, I'm proud!

The best baby gift I have ever received was a beautiful white baby blanket. It was not a cheap everyday blanket, but one of heirloom quality.

My youngest baby is 37 years old and I still have it. It was used for all three of my children.

The baby showers that I have been to recently, there were many blankets given as gifts.

I got a silverplated comb and brush personalized with the baby's name (girl) and the mom loved it. It's just a keepsake. I value our son's personalized baby cup and teething ring from 44 years ago! Also, I gave a gift after the baby was born (purchased from Etsy) and it was framed artwork with the baby's, name, birthdate and weight. It didn't cost much.

Do you this is woman's last name? If so, look on the three big sites, Bye Bye Baby, Amazon and Babies R Us to see if she is registered. If she is, you'll have an idea of what she needs.

Well, I would not buy jewelry for the baby of an acquaintance. Do you know if she is registered somwhere? That's your best bet. If not, buy bibs or blankets or onsies or sox or even one of those huge bags of pampers. If you buy clothing, don't buy infant clothing. She'll get enough of that. Buy something for a 6 Month old. Several of the girls at work said they got so many infant things, they never got to use some of it because their babies grew so quickly.

I always give gorgeus $$$ baby blankets. It's a can't miss present. If I don't know the colors of the nursery, I buy white too.

A book and a savings bond. She will get lots of clothing, grow out of it all in a couple of months, some not even worn.

Burt's Bee's Baby's, on-line, has some lovely organic cotton "bundles" (collections of clothing and baby necessities) or beautiful baby quilts. I just bought one for someone in my family.
