Life expectancy increasing

Per the census bureau - life expectancy for someone who was 65 in 2012 has been raised to 84 for men and 85 for women. A few years increase over the past. Of course those numbers are just averages. Per these numbers my DH will live 12 more years and I will live another 18.

However, I once had a patient who claimed to be a seer and she kept telling me I was going to die on my 80th birthday. At the time I was about 30 so that was fine with me - 80 seemed very far away.

The time, place & manner of my death is solely up to the sovereignty of God. When He is ready to call me home, I'll be gone, regardless of my age. I just hope if it's sooner rather than later, my husband remembers to cancel my QVC auto-deliveries. 😜

It may not be such a wonderful thing after all if Social Security goes broke or if there aren't enough young people to pay for it.

I just happened to read last night

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) released its latest annual mortality improvement scale for pension plans earlier this month. The scale is crafted using Social Security Administration data from 2012 to 2014 on mortality of Americans of all ages, and is used by pension plans to "help accurately measure pension obligations,"said Dale Hall, SOA's managing director of research.

Their study found that life expectancy had decreased by 6 months. And the US life expectancy was trending downward. And the US was dying younger.

I hope your study is right.

Living longer on about a bucket full of meds. My husband takes so many. He barely knows what each one is for.

I read that same article as you. It did say life expectency has decreased by six months.

My husband is the same way; tons of pills every day and night. Yet he still lives an unhealthy lifestyle.

I guess he thinks the pills will take care of everything. Watching him do that has given me a real aversion to pills. I try to avoid them and live healthy.

My grandfather lived to 98 years old. Don't ask me what he died from. He smoked a pipe all his life; he ate well, naturally and healthy; he always looked a healthy weight, perhaps ten pounds over; he daily had a routine and a wonderful garden and grape arbor; he drank a glass of red wine daily. His oldest daughter lived to 94, and my mother his third born lived to 88. All died in their homes and from natural causes.

Since the boomers became adults women have been out of the home into the workplace same as men, exposed to all the stresses and diseases. IMO , that would have a lot to do with this. However, where I live in a retirement community in Florida, there have been several deaths in the 6 years we have been here and all of them have been men.We have many widows living here and only one is a man. So my personal experience is much different than the statistical data.

I hope your study is right.

I read an article about this yesterday; that life expectancy is going down for everyone all over the world and the reasons researchers think this is happening (they're not sure, just theories).

@icaughtu My husband too. For some reason my husband thinks pills are the only treatment modality. When he recently turned 70, he declared himself aged and emulates with his older sisters who are well into their 80s.

I dunno. Seems so many pollutants and chemicals and this n that don't allow many to live long with the poisoning in the environments. Drug companies don't help much either. I know my ancestors lived long lives 112 for a great grandfather and 117 for her husband. My husbands grandmother lived to 107. It was not a pretty sight to see the human body at those ages and also immobile. Living longer means you had better have the money to do so also.

I agree with most of the posters on this thread, since I heard a similar "life expectancy" theory on the news several weeks ago.

I searched online and found the news story on life expectancy on CNN:

"Humans can only live so long and we're reaching the natural biological limit, researchers say in a report published in Nature.

The paper, published Wednesday [Oct. 5,2016], says that despite life expectancy being dramatically higher than it was 100 years ago, it's highly unlikely it will continue to rise any more than what it is right now. It also says the probability of anyone living for more than 125 years is incredibly unlikely.

In a statement released by the university, Jan Vijg [Albert Einstein College of Medicine] says that while 'there is no reason to think that the ongoing increase in maximum lifespan will end soon,' the data strongly suggests that it's 'already been attained and that this happened in the 1990s.'"

My grandfather lived to be 96 but he was senile for about the last 6 years of it, so what is the point of living but being senile ? I would find living until I'm 80 to be OK as long as I could get around and was fairly healthy. Once I am stuck somewhere being cared for I'd rather just give up the ship. I am a faithful Christian so I'm not afraid to die, as I believe totally that it is just a transition into another stage of life.
