did your kids ever surprise you with a haircut?

My daughter never did. My son made up for it. He had a haircut with bangs. I think they were called bowl cuts

A few days before it was time to get the school pictures, he decided to cut a 2 inch swath in the middle of his bangs. I don't know what he was thinking about, but there you have it. His Dr told him that was a great haircut because no one else had it

Cut off one plait to the rubber band & cut her bangs to her scalp. Did all this w/kiddie sissors! Remember those?

I sure do. Thats what my son used to cut his bangs down to the scalp. Are we related?

Well....of course having 3 girls there's always one who loves to chop on hair (if she wasn't in the mood her sisters would chop on it for her).

But here's my story that I've told so many times. As with most of my posts I apologize for the length!

My husband always went to a barber who lived down the road from us. He had a barber shop in his basement....his name was..."Shorty" (and he really was). He stood on a crate to cut hair (it was a regular barber chair.

My youngest daughter (she was 5 at the time) wanted to go with her Dad and I agreed (big mistake). She was tall for her age. All three of my girls had very long straight hair with bangs.

It seemed like it took forever for them to get home (another hint of what was to come).

Finally they walked in the door. Oh! My! My daughter's beautiful long (down her back even at that age) straight hair had bangs that were maybe (maybe) just below the hairline! I'm not exaggerating people! The sides were longer but the entire middle was that short. It looked like someone had taken that buzzer thing and used it!

I said, "What happened"? "Kindergarten pictures are this week". "OMG"! Our FIRST official school pictures and she looks, well you can imagine...these shaved bangs with the sides of the hair cut like Farah Faucett wings! The rest was untouched!

Here's what I was told by my husband. It seems "shorty" put my daughter in the chair, but then he put a board across the arms and had her sitting on the board (I know...WHY? WHy?) Regularly, he had to stand on a box, now he he had to stand on a step ladder? WHY? Ha!

My husband got a phone call during the haircutting and he stepped outside. He SWORE the damage was done when he came back in! He said he told Shortie I was going to kill the two of them. Shortie tried to make it better by cutting in the "wings".

To this day I don't understand how she ended up with the bangs looking like Shortie had used a buzz cutter on her bangs!

Can you imagine how long it took for those bangs to look even 1/2 way good?

Every time I look at those school pictures I laugh now. I had to buy the things because I bought her sisters and I didn't want to hurt her feelings.

Another time my middle daughter was in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. Her mother-in-law watched them the first week. She only had one child (my daughter's husband) but she worked for a very, very rich lady (her assistant). I mention this because she dressed amazingly and was always meticulous!

She brought the girls over to me to watch the second week! Again, like my girls they wore their hair straight, way down their back with bangs, except they all had white hair, it is amazing!

She'd taken it upon herself to have their hair cut into a 'bowl' right under their ears! They were crying, I started crying and his Mom was totally mystified on what was the problem!

It took a long time for my daughter to get over that one! Her mother-in-law to this day doesn't understand what was the problem but she doesn't get to take them anywhere near a hair salon! Ha!

There are many more stories but these are two of my favorites......now they are! Having 3 daughters with long, long hair is challenging when you are getting ready to go out and hair-do's need to be done.

I also have stories about head lice (or what I thought were head lice and weren't but that's for another time).

My 6 year-old grandson just gave his 4 year-old sister a haircut--mom and dad weren't too happy, but being the nana, i thought it was hysterical!! Just glad her hair was all that got cut!!

My son has very thick curly hair and when he was five he asked the barber to shave out the middle of his head.?..just like the hair of someone balding.

No haircut here either. But DS did, with help, dye his hair blonde one time but it came out more red than blonde. LOL

@bri20 HA! GS did that and managed a nice path in his hair before DDIL caught him in time. LOL

Yes, in the mid eighties at the height of the Cyndy Lauper craze. She cut her hair like Cyndy, short on one side, and longer on the other. It was shaved to the scalp a few inches up on the short side. Oh dear Lord! But it grew out into the long curly big, big hair She was a great experimenter.

My daughter has surprised me with both a haircut and a tattoo. She came to my work to show me the tattoo so there would be witnesses in case I killed her. She got a Hello Kitty tattoo on her foot. I just looked at it and said Oh, Hello Kitty. You're going to love that when you're 50. She said I will mom. I said well you better because it isn't going anywhere.

She cut her hair when she was two. My mom was watching her and she was big into cross stiching. She went to answer the phone and my daugther picked up her scissors and cut her hair above her ear. Her hair at the time was to about her shoulders so I had to cut it all off. Everyone told me what a cute little boy I had for a bit. I don't freak over stuff like that. It is hair, it will grow back.

When I was about 6 or so I had a best friend whose parents were fairly religious. Amy had waist length hair. The last 6-8 inches were dry, uneven and looked like cotton candy but her dad refused to let her cut it. I am not a fan of waist length hair. When it reaches that point, there is no style, it just hangs. I especially don't like it when you don't trim it and keep it in shape, and that is how her hair was. She had never gotten even a trim. I find that ridiculous and parents like that ridiculous. Amy wasn't allowed to cut her hair until she moved out on her own. What a nut her dad was, I felt sorry for her. By the time she was graduating high school, her hair was as long as Crystal Gayle.

Oh yes, both of my girls "trimmed" their hair on several occasions, but never did anything that wasn't fixable.

The absolute best tho was when one of my brothers gave himself a haircut with grass clippers. He put the clippers right into the front section of hair at his forehead and squeezed, creating a nice stubbly swath, the width of the blades, all the way to the crown of his head. He then ran into the house crying for Mom, saying his hair was "falling out", but it was quite obvious what he'd done. The fix for that disaster was for Mom to buzz cut the rest of his hair to match what he cut. The best part (for me) was that Mom was busy canning and couldn't fix little brother until later, which meant he had to sit at the supper table sporting that new haircut. Guess who never messed with the grass clippers again?

I had an A symmetrical hair cut in high school too. Oh, the 80s. I bleached pieces of my hair to light blond and then mixed different colors of Kool Aid packets (blue, purple and pink) and used that as a toner. I had lots of girls who liked it and paid me to do their hair. That is where my career as a colorist started. When i went in for my next hair cut the guy who cut my hair asked who did that and I told him I did. He asked with what and I told him. He said you need to go to school for this, you will do well. I did.

When she was little she cut her hair really short in front. More than once. It was to the point I had to hide the scissors. I'm not talking about bangs either, Just a random spot 3 inches long that stuck up. I always just left it to grow out. Her hair was long, no way was I going to cut all of it short to match.

Now her hair is in a mohawk that is bleached and dyed various blue and purple shades. She still cuts and maintains it herself. She's had some really cute cuts too. She doesn't want to go to school to be a stylist though.

I suppose it runs in the family, my husband clips his own hair and I've cut my own for years, along with dying it various colors since high school.
