Question for a language expert

I think that is what I need anyway!

I watch a fair amount of sports. I especially love baseball. And this happens a lot with baseball.

The announcers say something that doesn't feel correct to me. But, maybe I am the one who is incorrect!

When talking about the score, they will frequently say "there is no score." I believe 0-0 IS a score. Just as much as saying "the score is 5-0," I believe 0-0 is a score.

Now sometimes one will say "there has been no scoring," which I find correct.

You may hear it in hockey or football as well, as a game can go for quite some time without anyone scoring. Not basketball, as scoring usually takes place very quickly.

So.............is 0-0 a score, or is there NO score?

Score = making a point. No points, no score. Zero is a placeholder used until someone scores.

I think proper language is going in the same direction as proper spelling within a text.....i have told my grandkids i won't respond to their texts if they don't spell words correctly......they think i'm old....i am, but it's annoying to try to understand their abbreviations....nevermind the fact that they can't read or write cursive......just shaking my head......

In sports, a "score" is when a team makes a basket or a touchdown. Sometimes you hear the announcer yell, "SCORE!" when it happens.

So no, in sports, zero zero is no score.

This is proper language. Zero is nothing. If you have zero dollars in your wallet, you have no money, just like zero points is no score because a score is a point. You must have a point to have a score on the board.

I think a zero to zero scoring game is considered a score. Lions 0 ..... Bears 0. Works for me!!!!!

But if you are insistent on the use of proper language and writing, you might want to be a good example for them.

I would be very pleased that my grandchildren wanted to text their grandmother any way they chose. They clearly want to make contact with you.

Duty can be taught and enforced; love and caring comes from the heart and cannot be forced. There's a fine line - myself, I wouldn't push it. You might have texts spelled correctly and/or then...no texts at all.

Just as forms of communication change, language changes -- both written and spoken.

when you tell your granchildren that you will not respond to texts that you deem are spelled incorrectly (despite the fact that these words are commonly used and understood today), you are telling them that you are either incapable or unwilling to adapt and learn new things. Like it or not, you need to catch up with the rest of the world.

I was watching a football last weekend. I was also writing and remember that I put the the score in as "no score".

That must be my answer, didn't give a thought to it.
