Shopping today

I purchased an item that came to 5.45.I gave the cashier 20.50.She rang it up like I gave her the exact amount.I told her that she owed me 15.05.she said she didn't because she rang ut up wrong and the register says she owes 0 change...huh?

Yes I got my change but she was worried that her cash register would be out.

When I hand a cashier cash I always tell them the amount. I have had the same thing happen to me but I am able to tell the cashier if the amount I stated was incorrect she should have said so while the cash was in their hand. There is a big problem with our education system when we have people with high school diplomas that can not make simple change. I suggest please count my money and enter my amount in the register and let it do the math. The register will tell you my change. It is a simple process. My 8 year old grandson shops with me frequently. He can count out his money and he will tell them if his change is not right.

I had a twenty dollar bill and change ...what is wrong with that,..I don't always carry exact change to shop.

@sidsmom. If that had been me making the purchase I would say I only had a $20.00 which is frequently the case. When I get cash from the ATM machines they only give me $20 bills. And 2 quarters are easy to grab. I would expect $15.05 in change and smaller bills can be used at my neighbors self serve vegetable stand. I prefer to use cash. I always do it in a manner to eliminate coins except quarters that I use at the car wash. Every one handles their money in their own way. We have a right to expect to be given the correct change.

This day and age you have to repeat the amount due to them. Then say how much you are giving them if paying with cash. Then take the time to stand there and count your change out loud if they don't do it when they hand it to you. Most of them don't. I do it so I know they gave me the right amount and so do they. It is amazing how many people can't count money and they have to rely on the cash register to tell them how much to give back and even then they struggle with what they are taking out of the register.

I experienced the reverse of that. The clerk intentionally rang up the wrong amount given to him so he could make my change in whole dollars only. He didnt know how to deal with the coins.
I ended up with too much but he was done with me and on to messing up the next customer. He was literally giving away money to cover his inability to make change.

i've had that happen to me too, and on more than one occasion. it really throws them for a loop. i have to tell them how much change to give me. they look doubtful and hesitant while handing it to me!

I think it's on purpose. Last year around this time I went to see my PCP at his office in a nearby town instead of his office here as that was the only available appt. The co pay at that office was $15. I handed the girl a $20 and after she took it from me she said she didin't have any change, so I got nothing back. Long story short - a few months later I had still not gotten my $5 refund and the diabetes educator told me that their group had some receptionists who were caught stealing from the patients by doing exactly what she did to me, and they were fired and charges were brought against them. I've never gotten my $5 refund from their group though, and I'm certain I never will.

Of course, I totally agree transactions should be correct.

I have a sister who is famous for doing stuff like this.

Then when they stumble & get flustered, she talks about the

"downfall of today's youth...pfft...they can do a simple money exchange"

talk for the rest of the day.

I've watched her do this for decades.

Such a passive/aggressive move. I can spot it a mile away.

Even if it's done without malice, the grocery store/Subway cashier

shouldn't be one's personal Bank Teller.

Go to a Bank to get your change.

With all the electronics nowadays, people don't know how to count change back when given an amount over what is owed. I once had someone give me about $20 more than I was supposed to get back. She argued with me when I pointed it out - I took it and figured if they can't hire someone that can count change, it's their loss.

When I gave her my money all she had to do was enter that amount in the cash register but maybe she can't count change and that flustered her.I hadn't thought of that so next time I will say the total amount.

Did she just say that she didn't have any change and that was it? How did you respond?

She said she was late that morning and did not get to the bank so she did not have any change, and they would send me a refund. However, the refund hasn't actually happened. When I took the diabetes class there was a copay and I said I should have a $5 credit on my acct. because of this and the diabetes educator told me about this scam these girls were pulling on patients. They would not give me the $5 credit - so in the end I'm clearly out the $5.

@151949 If you knew the amt. of your co-pay then having the correct amt. would have been the wiser thing to do. No credit/debit card to use???

I find it odd that you would simply chalk up the $$ loss.

Then again, this whole thread is pretty much a re-hash of one of your threads about cashiers and change.

Yes you are so right because everywhere I go I can just assume that no one will know how to give change or be ripping customers off in a scam. Oh Gee I really really wish I were as smart and savvy as you.
