House Heat: How Low Can You Go?

Every year I play 'How Low Can I Go" with the inside temperature.

Here in Dallas, it'll start getting cooler in late Oct/early Nov,

so I'll try & wait as loooong as possible. I'll put on yoga pants,

a long-sleeved sweater & slippers before I turn on the

heat for the season.

I can get to 71-72 degrees then I have to turn on the heat.

How 'bout you?

Has to be 50 inside before it comes on. We keep it at 62 once that happens. We also keep the bedroom windows opened ( 1-2 inches) all winter for fresh air.

I turned the heat on a couple weeks ago. It's set at 65. I turn it on when the night time temp gets under 50.

About 72 is the absolute lowest I can tolerate, then turn on the heat.

Heat is usually set to 66-68 during the day and 50 at night. I love the cooler weather.

I have two geriatric cats so try to keep the house at 68 during the day and about 62 at night for their comfort. Any lower than that and the cats get too chilled. Otherwise I would set the temperature at 60 for the night and 65 during the day.

My downstairs is reading 64 right now.

I don't usually turn on the heat until it gets into the 40s outside - maybe in the morning just to take the chill out. I hate putting the heat on...

@bri20 Yep, inside is showin 62. I'm in a tank top, jeans and bare feet with windows open a few inches all around for the fresh air. No issues : )

Last week I forgot to shut windows and I woke up to 64 degrees. I quickly turned the heat on until the temp went up to 68 then turned it off. My windows are closed for the season now so no more surprises. I live in central NY and we have had some chilly nights so I will be turning the heat on soon. I can dress for 68 and dress for warmth. I dress warmer when visiting others just in case. I know a house that sets 65 and that is to cold for me. Time to get the humidifiers out and get them ready. After reading other replies maybe I should try a couple of degrees lower.

This is a coincidence. We were just discussing this topic this morning. We are in Northern Virginia. Temps at night a few nights down in the 50s. Husband asked this morning if he should turn on the heat. I tend to overheat at night so I would say no but - in this instance - he's not feeling well. On with the furnace! Usually, not this early.

I have a sweater on. LOL

We sleep with the window cracked and the ceiling fan on every night - even in the winter. I absolutely cannot sleep in a warm room.

No matter the season, I cannot stand to be too hot. In the winter, I like to keep the inside temps around 62. If I feel a bit chilly I just add a sweater.

But I've found that if I wear a Cuddle Duds shirt under my top I can handle

much lower temps.

Thank goodness the worst of the muggy heat stroke temps are almost over

for this past summer here in S.E. Louisiana. It's been awful. Lots of plants

have died from the heat in spite of the fact that we've kept them well hydrated.

I keep my home at 68 degrees 24 hours a day in the winter months.... I do not feel chilled.... I am not uncomfortably warm.... and it makes little difference in my bill to feel comfortable at 68 degrees VS trying to keep it at 65 or such and having to wear sweaters.

When I do get around to turning on the heat I usuall put it at 70/71. I won't even turn it on for another month probably

We live in a colonial home. We have timers and zoned heating, so we set them and forget them. The heat is on 62, throughout the house, during the day. In the late afternoon/ early evening, it goes up to 68, on the first floor, for when my husband gets home. While we sleep, it all zones are set to 62. In the morning when we get up and shower, etc, the second floor goes up to 68 and back down to 62 by 8:00 am.

Weekends are set a bit differently because our schedule is different.

The heat is always on. If the house gets to the set temperature, the heat will go on.

The same for the central ac. It is set for the desired temps/timers. If the house gets to the set temp, it will go on.

During the day it's set at 68, at night goes down to 60-62, 2 story house so the upstairs really gets warm at night, like to sleep cool.

we have had a few nights in the mid fifties, but i have not turned the heat on yet. love sleeping with the windows open.

i will probably turn the heat on sometime next month and it is usually set at 67.

i would actually keep it lower if there werent other people in the house.

Based on the outside temp or what the thermostat says inside?

Right now it's 50 outside and 70 in here, so it's okay for now and it's not on.

When we are in the middle of winter and it's really cold or windy I will set it to 71 or 72.

How Low Can You Go?

We play a similar game. We wait as long as possible before we start heating the house. In the warmer months we put off cooling the house, too, as long as we can.
