I saw the story about it in the Daily Mail. They said it was a "rare form" of dementia. Interestingly, she left acting after that movie, had two children, and then became an interior designer.

I saw The Sound of Music again a few years ago and was struck by the scene in which Capt. Von Trapp led the audience in the singing of "Eidelweiss," the country's national anthem, in front of the Nazi soldiers just before he and his family escaped under cover of that variety show. Imagine the courage and love of country he had to take the time to do that just before he fled. Where would the world be without people like that? It's as if he was telling them to remember who they are even under Nazi occupation. I'm assuming that this is true and not something that was added to jazz up the movie. It's something one would never never notice or understand when seeing the movie as a kid.

I just looked it up, and you are correct. What a disappointment! I guess it was, in fact, added to the movie for effect. Eidelweiss was the last song that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together, according to the Wikipedia entry.

Also from that entry:

"The great popularity of the song in the Anglophone world has led many of its audience to believe that it is an Austrian folk song or even the official national anthem.[2] Austria's official anthem is in fact "Land der Berge, Land am Strome" and the anthem used before the Anschluss was "Sei gesegnet ohne Ende."

It was such an inspiration to believe that Capt. Von Trapp stood there in front of the Nazis in the auditorium and led them in their national anthem. Oh, well, he did leave the country rather than submit to their orders that he join Hitler's armed forces. That's courageous enough, considering that he might have been killed. I can't remember where I read the info about Eidelweiss being the national anthem. What a bummer!

@Ms X Yes, the article in the link I posted states she died of a rare form of dementia. It also cites a film she made after The Sound of Music so it sounds like the Daily Mail has it wrong on that point.

I was also saddend to see this news yesterday. TSOM is a long time favorite of mine. Several years ago I had the pleasure of visiting some of the locations where the film was made. Charmian Carr and Julie Andrews were only 5 yrs. apart agewise.

Me too. She was beautiful. I read she was a friend of Michael Jackson.

I've been on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, Austria several times. One time, it was a bus filled with only women. We sang the musical score throughout the tour. What great fun.

Wow.....that is too bad. It seems like yesterday when pretty much the whole cast was doing the morning show circuit discussing an anniversary of the movie. She was one of the cast that was there.....that was a very progressive form of dementia.
