Cop-hater shooting in Philly

A gunman was shot dead in Philadelphia after he ambushed and shot two cops and four civilians, killing one of the bystanders, in a 'targeted attack on police'.

Nicholas Glenn, 25, has been identified as the gunman, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

One 25-year-old woman was killed in the attack and two officers were injured. Three civilians were also wounded, including one who is in critical condition.

A note believed to be written Glenn that allegedly contained rambling anti-police rhetoric and named a parole officer as a target was recovered near Young's car.

Ross said Glenn first ambushed Sgt Sylvia Young, 46, late Friday night just a few blocks from the University of Pennsylvania campus.

Young said Glenn didn't say a word when he began to fire into her marked police cruiser around 11.19pm.

The 19-year veteran was trapped in her vehicle and was struck in her left arm and protective vest as she leaned into the passenger side to shield herself.

She was shot up to eight times directly into her vest, according to sources.

Young heard Glenn fire at least 15 shots before the gunfire ceased, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Nearby officers saw that Young had been shot and began to chase Glenn.

As he fled Glenn fired into a bar on 51st and Sansom, wounding a security guard.

He then grabbed a woman and 'used her as a shield' before shooting her in the leg, according to Ross.

Glenn ran two blocks before he fired multiple shots into a random white vehicle.

A man who was also inside the car is currently in critical condition.

Glenn was then confronted by University of Pennsylvania police officer Ed Miller and two Philadelphia officers.

They opened fire and killed Glenn, Ross said.

Miller, a former sergeant, was shot in the hand during the ambush.

Glenn has a number of drug-possession convictions in Philadelphia and was also charged in connection with a gang rape case in November 2009, court records

Well, at least the police saved the taxpayers a bunch of money; a huge "BRAVO" to them for that.

RIP to the innocent bystander....my heart hurts for the family.

Prayers to the person in critical condition; may they recover quickly.

Here's to the cops making a full and speedy recovery.

Another attack on the great folks that try to keep us safe. Just an awful story; I feel bad for all the families involved, they are left to deal with the aftermath.

Sorry for the innocent bystanders and the cops. Relieved to hear the shooter was snuffed out.

Another almost catastophe was thwarted in NJ - a few pipe bombs were set to go off on a 5k Charity run. Fortunately there were no casualties.

Yes, sadly this was the news I woke up to this morning.

Prayers to the victims family and the innocent bystanders.

I believe the woman officer is a 19 year veterean. Shot how many times? Eight? Geez.

This is not something new, her loved ones have probably always had this fear in them since she announced she wanted to become a police officer.

Officers are always in the crosshairs, unless they have a *desk job*, always. Every day they walk out the front door, they may not return and they know it.

But it's their job to serve and protect. I'd say 99.998 percent do that.

My gosh, what would we do if we didn't have police enforcement? Just think: We wouldn't even be able to stand out in our front yards to water our lawns. Too dangerous. We'd be a society always in hiding. Very scarey.

It is sad when some people confuse their problems with life as caused by people who in a lot of cases haven't ever had any contact with them...how can anyone protect themselves from this.Many thanks to the brave police officers who do their best trying to keep everyone safe.

I read somewhere that the suspect {now dead} handed someone a hate filled rambling letter. I'm wondering why this isn't being labeled as a hate crime?

@hsawaknow I think it is but since the sicko is now dead...it will depend if he was associated with any group.

Add in the additional shooting of the cops responding to a FAKE suicide call in Texas.... I'm so done with this.

I think it is time to start enforcing the law with some shame thrown in for the crimes that seem to be occuring more often by people who don't seem to have any respect for authority.I remember growing up that my mom always told us to follow the law and to not bring shame on the family.I don't think many have shame these days but I know that it definately played a role in keeping my behavior in check.A little shame on the family was not acceptable then.

I don't think shaming a family is right. Children and siblings should not have to have their lives ruined, and we can't assume all parents are to blame.

People like this guy should never get out of jail.

Listening to our local CBS news just minutes ago, there was a report of shooting after shooting after shooting after shooting in the Bay Area today. Something is terribly wrong in our society.

This incident is so disturbing, shooting at everyone in that area and targeting police officers. Terrible.

We had a shooting in another city the other day. They missed the target but shot a nearby 16 month old baby and his mother.

While I totally agree with what you have said, look how many in our country, in this era of time, do not have a family. A disproportionate number are now raised in 1 parent households (as was I ).

Children raised in single parent households has doubled since 1960, I just looked up that stat. And boys born and raised without a father, you can check those stats, and they are not good.

Of course this was a hate crime. It certainly was not done out of love and respect.

And if the police shoot back in defense, perish the thought, the media picks it up and it is labeled as some sort of discriminatory action.

The FBI identifies a Hate Crime to be:

"A hate crime is a traditional offense like murder, arson, or vandalism with an added element of bias. For the purposes of collecting statistics, the FBI has defined a hate crime as a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.”

The shooter didn't appear to target any particular group nor profession.
