Should She Help Her Sister?

Mariah Carey, the Diva of Diva's has had an ongoing turbulent relationship with her drug addicted sister. From everything I've read and/or heard, Mariah refuses to assist her monetarily or otherwise. MAYBE, going to jail for a while will help her clean up?

SAUGERTIES, New York --

The sister of pop star Mariah Carey has been arrested on prostitution charges in upstate New York.

Police tell the Daily Freeman of Kingston that 55-year-old Alison Carey was arrested in Saugerties on Friday following an investigation at a hotel. Police say she solicited money in exchange for sex from an undercover police officer.

Police describe Carey as a transient, and say she advertised her services online. Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra tells the newspaper that she identified herself as the performer's sister when she was arrested.

Carey is due in Saugerties Town Court on Aug. 30.

It wasn't immediately clear if she had an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Mariah will do what she feels is best in her situation....I can't comment because I don't know the whole story.If it was my sister and I had enough money I would try to get her to rehab but that might not be wanted or the person might not be ready to be helped.

Maybe Mariah has been taken advantage of on the past.

At the stage of life they are both in there will be a history. This behavior doesen't develop over night.

@ECBG I wouldn't doubt that she ha been taken advantage of.addicts can sink very low.

I've been reading about Mariah Carey's sister for well over fifteen years, her sister has had numerous run ins with the law and has chosen her own path in life.

Some people don't want to be helped and want to stay as they are, none of us should judge this family because of having a very famous family member. I've watched enough "Intervention" shows to know that addicts come from all social economic groups.

@dex,When I taught we had a workshop with the Sheriff's Department. I saw a picture where they had gone in a trailer where the parents of a baby had a meth lab under the baby's crib which had Disney sheets!

I have no doubt that she has helped her in the past and probably a lot of other familhy members have also. It is sad when things like this happen to people but when you are an adult you are responsible for your own life choices. No one owes you anything and it doesn't matter if they are rich and famous. When people just keep repeating bad choices that is on them and it isn't anyone elses' responsibility to fix things for them.

I don't know what she can do. She shouldn't have to force her sister into rehab and shadow her for a lifetime to make sure she doesn't relapse. I don't know how anyone can ever be expected to "fix" someone else with money.

I don't know anything about this family or how close any of them are. The sister is 10 years older than Mariah and maybe they were never close, who knows.

Whatever the issues are, I would still help her mainly for the sake of her sisters children. They're the innocent victims.

As a personality, I do not care for Mariah at all. She seems really full of herself but i do think she is a great artist.

I have a feeling she has helped her sister repeatedly and anything she gives her sister would be going for drugs.

If her sister is as sick as she is supposed to be I would make sure any money she gets goes directly to where ever it needs it, for example paying her hospital, drs and/or rent directly to the company/person and not to her sister so she can be sure the money actually makes it there. Any other way would be enabling at addict.

No one here has any idea how much or how little she has helped her in the past or how many times her sister didn't keep up her end of the bargain.

At this point @nana59, any help given by Mariah Carey would be enabling her sister. She has helped her in the past. Mariah, from what I've read and seen is not a nice person but in this case, I don't think she should financially help. Now if she can finance a reputable rehabilitation facility for her, that would be great. I do wish Mariah would help the children, though.

I agree 100% with this. My niece is a drug addict and she has put the entire family through such an awful time. While my husband was in his final days dying of cancer, she was texting me and also one of my sons, begging us for money. She did not care that we were in some of the worst days of our lives. These addicts will stoop to anything to get their next fix. It does not matter what you do, unless they truly, truly want help, and they have to want it really bad, they will not change! My niece was arrested, went through jailtime, went to a court ordered rehab, swore she was off drugs for good and just 3 months later failed her required drug test. She's pregnant with baby #3 while this is happening, baby #2 was born addicted. She's lost custody of her children and has been told baby #3 will be taken upon his birth. No amount of money is going to help "fix" her without her truly wanting off the drugs and that is the same for all drug addicts. I do not know the whole story with Mariah's family, I do not know how much money she has or has not invested in her sister's wellbeing but I know that it is wasted unless her sister truly wants to get better. I agree completely though that if children are involved, she should help them. They are the most innocent of victims and my heart goes out to them.

Here is how I see it, not having followed this or ever heard about it before. I also have no knowledge of their relationship or past attempts to help her.

If it were me, I'd intervene (whether sister wanted me to or not) just one time. I'd pay for the very best help she could get. If that didn't stick, she'd have to come to me and seem serious about getting clean and I'd pay for the best one more time. I say this because money for something like this is in no way a burden for someone like Mariah. For many other families, they go broke trying to save a loved one. But we all know that people really have to save themselves.

After that, I'd have to wash my hands of it, even if it would break my heart.

Drug and alcohol addiction is everywhere in both sides of my family and one side of my husbands; her story is one I know very well, sadly. Many have already said:

* You can't help an addict UNLESS the addict wants help.

* We have no idea what their past is and how much she may have already helped

From my PERSONAL experience of dealing with family and an addict:

* They will BLEED YOU DRY financially

* They will lie, cheat, steal, do ANYTHING to get what they want and need. Addicts are selfish and think ONLY of themselves.

* They will use their children as pawns to get what they need. You can't EVER assume the children will get any of the money, clothing, ANYTHING that you may give them.

People take pity on addicts. The pull at the heartstrings of do-gooders. But talk to the family: parents, siblings, children and you'll a different story. There is a ripple effect of damage that leaves scars a mile wide. As cold as this sounds; sometimes you simply have to walk away and whatever happens, happens. That may mean the addict finally sees the light and makes a choice to get help and stay clean; it may mean they OD and die. But it's ALL on the addict at that point, not the family.

Mariah is famous so this sells papers. The number of people who go through this in the US is in the multiple thousands but you don't hear about it because no one cares; it won't make money for the rags that report it. My gut says her brother isn't as "kind hearted" as you may think, but again....I've been down this road so many times I can't be bothered anymore.

I hope they all find peace.

Is her sister asking for help? Unless she is, what can Mariah do?

My father was an alcoholic, so I know first-hand the chaos an addict brings to your life. I can see why this sister is on her own.

Well, yeah @ Montana, her sister has been begging for Mariah's help. However, even if my sister wasn't asking me for help and I knew she was in a bind, she wouldn't have to ask me. This provided, she is not abusing drugs.
