I was reading in Redbook magazine today that all root foods are high in carbs and should be eaten in only small amounts. This would include potatoes, parsnips, turnips ,carrots and beets, jicima(sp) and radishes. I did not look this up to verify it but it is food for thought if you are trying to cut back on carbs.

I don't know, but there are sources online that say they are good for us.

I like jicama, turnips, not so much.

http://www.healthcastle.com/carb_root_vegetables.shtml

Root vegetables are the edible starchy tubers or roots of plants. They are wonderful sources of fiber and good carbohydrates for a healthy diet, not to mention they taste delicious. But they are often mistakenly associated with potatoes and labeled as "high-carb foods."

Root vegetables should be making a comeback among food lovers and health-conscious consumers. They are a great source of fiber and vitamins, and are much lower in carbs than you might expect. With a little creativity, these veggies are easy to incorporate into a healthy meal plan and lifestyle.

I'm okay with the carbs you listed because they aren't processed. I don't really eat much in the way of turnips, parsnips, or jicama. Occasionally I eat some shredded carrots on my salad or have roasted beets for dinner.

I do eat potatoes - mostly baked potatoes and baked sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are a complex carb and contain a lot of fiber.

I don't elimiate whole food groups; but given the choice, I pick complex over simple carbs.

I don't take nutritional advice from Red Book...lol According to my nutritionist, all vegetables including potatoes are good for us and potatoes get a bum rap. Sweet potatoes are particularly nutritious but white potatoes are also healthy and we should eat them. It's the butter and the sour cream and the brown sugar on sweet potatoes and yams that causes problems. It's not like carrots and radishes belong in the Twinky food group...lol

Let's face it, any food you eat too much is no good for you. IMO if people could just eat less and move more they wouldn't have to worry about carbs, sugar, etc.

I remember Julia Child saying that moderation is the key to a healthy diet. I agree with her. The only exception is if someone has a particular medical condition (diabetes, food allergies, PKU, gluten sensitivity, etc.).

When I was in college, one of the popular courses was OF ALL THINGS nutrition. It had all the earmarks of a "gut course," in fact. The professor held court in an enormous auditorium that was filled to the rafters. I didn't need a science course, as I took plenty, but I took it anyway. Decades later, I'm so glad I did. This professor probably improved the lives of untold hundreds of thousands of people in his years as a lecturer. His course was wildly popular, but we really learned a lot He was an extraordinary teacher. Even though the science of nutrition has evolved since then, I was educated about the basics and can read a nutrition label with a real understanding because of him.

The field of nutrition seems to always be demonizing certain nutrients while putting forth others as the key to health. That their findings have been repeatedly proved false and/or exaggerated does not seem to diminish their zeal. I'm a bread/pasta addict who is trying to cut back, with some success. If I had to eat only one food, it would be lasagna with sweet Italian sausages, cheese, and eggplant parm as filling. In a perfect world, this would be the food recommended by nutritionists.

I'm not for eliminating anything unless there's actual a medical reason to do that. Most of us just need to eat the "evils" in smaller quantities.

Years ago when I did WW for the first time, we weighed and measured, and to this day more than 40 years later, those quantity suggestions still make sense to me - even when I knowingly ignore them!
