topic Parental responsibility? in Community Chat

While flipping through channels the other evening, I came upon HBO's documentary "The Weight of the Nation". This particular segment was about childhood obesity. I didn't watch long, because I became frustrated almost immediately.

The focus was on sugary cereals which are heavily advertised during children's programming. I think the main thrust of the program was that government should step in and control over what can be advertised and when. Really? What happened to parents saying "NO"?

These same types of cereal were advetised every Saturday morning when my children were young. They begged me to buy this junk food cereal and I said "no". They are grown now and they still talk about it! We all laugh now.

Why can't some parents seem to be able to say no to their children? Why does the government have to step in and take over parenting? What happened to parental responsibility?
